In membrane computing, P system has proved to be a rich framework for handling a variety of problems arising in different areas. In this note we examine an array-rewriting P system for rectangular picture array generation. This system makes use of Pure 2D context-free grammar rules in its regions. We obtain certain comparison results that bring out the suitability of this P system model in increasing the generative power of picture generation.

In distributed virtual environment (DVE) systems, a distributed server infrastructure is often used to reduce the latency between servers and clients. Under this infrastructure, mapping clients to proper servers is one of the key issues for improving the interactivity and overall performance. Most traditional methods of mapping the clients to servers only consider the load balancing problem. However, there are two other important aspects that should be involved: the physical world integrity and the virtual world integrity. In this work, we propose a novel mapping algorithm which takes care of all three aspects at the same time. The algorithm converts the mapping problem into cutting stage and matching stage to get optimal result with polynomial complexity. The experimental results show that our algorithm improves the overall performance of DVE systems significantly.

Due to the existence of systematic bias in the measurements, inter-chip normalization is required before integrated data analysis of multiple microarray datasets. Current inter-chip normalization methods rely on some assumptions, which can rarely be verified by experiments, such as the invariant expression level of housekeeping genes or the stability of statistical data distribution. In this paper, we present a highly verifiable inter-chip normalization method using genetic optimization algorithm, which depends only on a small number of housekeeping genes, and therefore facilitates experimental validation without any accuracy lost.

Many applications of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) require location information of the randomly deployed nodes. A common solution to the localization problem is to deploy a few special beacon nodes having location awareness, which help the ordinary nodes to localize. In this approach, non-beacon nodes estimate their locations using noisy distance measurements from three or more non-collinear beacons they can receive signals from. In this paper, the ranging-based localization task is formulated as a multidimensional optimization problem, and addressed using bio-inspired algorithms, exploiting their quick convergence to quality solutions. An investigation on distributed iterative localization is presented in this paper. Here, the nodes that get localized in an iteration act as references for remaining nodes to localize. The problem has been addressed using particle swarm optimization (PSO) and bacterial foraging algorithm (BFA). A comparison of the performances of PSO and BFA in terms of the number of nodes localized, localization accuracy and computation time is presented.

Wireless sensor network (WSN) based structural health monitoring (SHM) system attracts increasing interest in recent years. However, the restricted bandwidth, memory and energy pose great challenges to the application of SHM in large scale building. Supported by a real engineering project, a WSN based prototype of SHM system is designed in this paper. Acceleration data, synchronously sampled in each sensor node, are transported to a data processing computer through a base station. In order to achieve a high network throughput, a time division multiple access (TDMA) approach is proposed to reduce the packet collision and energy consumption. 17 sensor nodes, one base station and a processing computer are distributed to validate the prototype system. Test results present that the approach, we proposed, can reduce the signal collision and increase data throughput. The prototype is feasible to the SHM project of a large scale building.

This paper addresses the challenge of forming appropriate heterogeneous robot teams to solve tightly-coupled, potentially multi-robot tasks, in which the robot capabilities may vary over the environment in which the task is being performed. Rather than making use of a permanent tightly-coupled robot team for performing the task, our approach aims to recognize when tight coupling is needed, and then only form tight cooperative teams at those times. This results in important cost savings, since coordination is only used when the independent operation of the team members would put mission success at risk. Our approach is to define a new semantic information type, called environmentally dependent information, which allows us to capture certain environmentally-dependent perceptual constraints on vehicle capabilities. We define locations at which the robot team must transition between tight and weak cooperation as critical junctures. Note that these critical juncture points are a function of the robot team capabilities and the environmental characteristics, and are not due to a change in the task itself. We calculate critical juncture points by making use of our prior ASyMTRe approach, which can automatically configure heterogeneous robot team solutions to enable sharing of sensory capabilities across robots. We demonstrate these concepts in experiments involving a human-controlled blimp and an autonomous ground robot in a target localization task.

The systematic conception of decentralized and self-adaptive software systems, as demanded for the run-time management of today’s distributed, multi-tier software architectures, is an active research area. Here, we discuss a coordination architecture that facilitates the enactment of externalized coordination models in Multi-agent systems (MAS). Coordination is configured by systemic models, i.e. structures of agent-behaviour interdependencies that denote the mutual influences of agent activities. The systematic, iterative application development is supported by a non-intrusive integration approach that enables developers to adjust application dynamics by complementing agent-based applications with systemic coordination models.

In this paper, we propose to improve the SvS algorithm by skipping elements of the smaller set for reducing a search boundary. The boundary of skipped element is determined by boundaries of elements prior to and next to it. We perform experiments on uniformly distributed random datasets to compare our algorithm with the standard SvS. We use regression analysis to get an equation for determining an appropriate skipping number. Our results show that the skipping SvS algorithm using the equation obtained can reduce approximately 41% on the number of comparisons of the standard SvS algorithm.

The last few years have witnessed an increasing interest in modular reconfigurable robotics for education, inspired robotic research, and space applications. This paper presents the latest results of the cube-M modular project. Firstly, an overview of the research achievements in modular robot is given. Then the new modular robot cube-M with one degree of freedom, an improved version of the Y1 modular robot, is presented. After that, the discussion focuses on the realization of a distributed hardware and control. Each module has embedded intelligent capabilities with an independent onboard controller to enable the realization of completely modular design. In the end, a snake-like robot prototype is built to confirm the feasibility of our design principle.

This paper is devoted to the problem of H filtering for a class of neutral stochastic systems with both discrete and distributed time-varying *** objective is to design a full order filter such that the resulting filtering error system is stochastically asymptotically stable with a prescribed H∞performance *** on the stability theory of stochastic systems,a delay-dependent and rate-dependent sufficient condition for the existence of filter is obtained in terms of linear matrix inequalities（LMIs）.The corresponding filter design method is also proposed,while the explicit expression for the desired filter is given.A numerical example is finally included to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
