In recent years, the amount of Internet accessible digital audiovisual media files has vastly increased. Therefore the need to describe the media (by way of metadata) has also increased significantly. MPEG-7 (finalized in 2001) provides a comprehensive and rich metadata standard for the description of multimedia content. Unfortunately, a standardized query format does not exist for MPEG-7, or other multimedia metadata. Such a standard would provide for communications between querying clients and databases, supporting cross-modal and cross-media retrieval. The lSO/lEC SC29WG11 committee decided therefore to contribute to this application space by adding such functionality as a new part of the MPEG-7 series of standards. In response to a Call for Proposals, six proposals were submitted. This paper describes the strengths of each proposal as well as the resulting draft standard for the MPEG-7 query format.

In this paper, we introduce a framework that supports a large number of participants in a collaborative virtual environment (CVE). We consider object classification based on avatars' physical characteristics to define the overlay network used to disseminate update messages between participants. This concept systematically puts objects into different logical clusters where each cluster can be rated in terms of a persistency class. We integrate a greedy heuristic algorithm to form a better network structure and then apply the dominating set principle to build a routing table for intra-zone communication. In this paper, we have used OPNET to verify the applicability of these approaches to large-scale CVEs.

We derive new analytic approximations to the capacity distribution of frequency-selective Rayleigh fading MIMO channels. The results apply specifically to OFDM-based spatial multiplexing. In particular, we present a new closed-form Gaussian approximation which yields very high accuracy in many scenarios. For the low SNR regime, we also present a new simpler closed-form Gamma approximation, which we show to be even more accurate than Gaussian in this case. Our approximations are based on new exact closed-form expressions which we derive for the variance of the mutual information which, in contrast to previous results, apply for systems with both arbitrary numbers of antennas and arbitrary-length channel delay profiles.

This paper presents a novel field robot JL-I based on a reconfigurable concept for urban search and rescue applications. The robot consists of three identical modules; each module is an entire robotic system that can perform distributed activities. It features three-degrees-of-freedom (DOF) active joints actuated by serial and parallel mechanisms for changing shape and flexible docking mechanism. The docking mechanism enables adjacent modules to connect or disconnect flexibly and automatically. DOF analysis, working space analysis and the kinematics of the 3D active joint between connected modules are studied thoroughly. In the end a series of successful tests confirm the principles and the robot's capabilities.

Efficient multisite job scheduling facilitates the cooperation of multi-domain massively parallel processor systems in a computing grid environment. However, co-allocation, heterogeneity, adaptability, and scalability emerge as tough challenges for the design of multisite job scheduling models and algorithms. This paper presents a new multisite job scheduling schema based on the multisite job scheduling model and the performance model for a heterogeneous grid environment. There are three key components: resource selection, reservation, and backfilling. The optimal and greedy-heuristic adaptive resource selection strategies are introduced. The conservative and easy backfilling are incorporated into the backfilling procedure. Experiments indicate that the scheduler and the algorithm are effective and perform better than a non-adaptive algorithm. © 2006 IEEE.

In this paper, we present a robot middleware technology named Robot Software Communications Architecture (RSCA) for its use in networked home service robots. The RSCA provides a standard operating environment for the robot applications together with a framework that expedites the development of such applications. The operating environment is comprised of a real-time operating system, a communication middleware, and a deployment middleware. Particularly, the deployment middleware supports the reconfiguration of component-based robot applications including installation, creation, start, stop, tear-down, and un-installation, In designing RSCA, we have adopted a middleware called SCA from the software defined radio domain and extend it since the original SCA lacks the real-time guarantees and appropriate event services. We have fully implemented RSCA and performed measurements to quantify its run-time performance. Our implementation clearly shows the viability of RSCA. © 2006 IEEE.

Motivated by applications to sensor, peer-to-peer, and ad-hoc networks, we study the problem of computing functions of values at the nodes in a network in a totally distributed manner. In particular, we consider separable functions, which can he written as linear combinations of functions of individual variables. Known iterative algorithms for averaging can be used to compute the normalized values of such functions, but these algorithms do not extend in general to the computation of the actual values of separable functions. The main contribution of this paper is the design of a distributed randomized algorithm for computing separable functions based on properties of exponential random variables. We bound the running time of our algorithm in terms of the running time of an information spreading algorithm used as a subroutine by the algorithm. Since we are interested in totally distributed algorithms, we consider a randomized gossip mechanism for information spreading as the subroutine. Combining these algorithms yields a complete and simple distributed algorithm for computing separable functions. The second contribution of this paper is an analysis of the information spreading time of the gossip algorithm. This analysis yields an upper bound on the information spreading time, and therefore a corresponding upper bound on the running time of the algorithm for computing separable functions, in terms of the conductance of an appropriate stochastic matrix. These bounds imply that, for a class of graphs with small spectral gap (such as grid graphs), the time used by our algorithm to compute averages is of a smaller order than the time required lor the computation of averages by a known iterative gossip scheme [5].
