Data replication is one of the key components in data grid architecture as it enhances data access and reliability and minimises the cost of data transmission. In this paper, we address the problem of reducing the overheads of the replication mechanisms that drive the data management components of a data grid. We propose an approach that extends the resource broker with policies that factor in user quality of service as well as service costs when replicating and transferring data. A realistic model of the data grid was created to simulate and explore the performance of the proposed policy. The policy displayed an effective means of improving the performance of the grid network traffic and is indicated by the improvement of speed and cost of transfers by brokers.

In this talk, a fuzzy singularly perturbed model is proposed for the modeling, control and filtering of a class of multi-time-scale dynamical systems, such as semiconductor packaging processes, multi-link (joint) flexible manipulators and large scale flexible space structure. The variant expands the idea from Takagi-Sugeno type fuzzy system that the dynamics of a class of distributed parameter systems can be approximated by softly merging locally linear singularly perturbed model, and an increased partition of fuzzy space will lead to a more precise approximation. As a result, the control problem for multi-time scale dynamical systems can be reduced to that for fuzzy singularly perturbed system so that plentiful of theoretical results are hopefully obtained.

Based on QoS framework-SWAN, A gateway-centric adaptive QoS-aware multipath routing protocol (GC-AQMR) is presented. It can ensure that each mobile node has a set of link-disjoint and loop-free routing to the gateway. Moreover, the intermediate node in the path also has the multipath information to the gateway. When the intermediate node experiences the congestion or link-break, it can switch adaptively to an alternate path with the additional path information. Simulations have shown that the SWAN system adopting GC-AQMR outperforms the SWAN with AODV protocol on all the performance metrics: Packet delivery ratio, average end-to-end delay/throughput and the fairness among real-time flows.

We study distributed algorithms, also known as gossip algorithms, for information dissemination in an arbitrary connected network of nodes. distributed algorithms have applications to peer-to-peer, sensor, and ad hoc networks, in which nodes operate under limited computational, communication, and energy resources. These constraints naturally give rise to "gossip" algorithms: schemes in which nodes repeatedly communicate with randomly chosen neighbors, thus distributing the computational burden across all the nodes in the network and making the computation robust against node failures. Information dissemination based on network coding was introduced by Deb and Medard. They showed the virtue of coding by analyzing a coding algorithm for a complete graph. Although their scheme generalizes to arbitrary graphs, the analysis does not. We present analysis of this algorithm for arbitrary graphs. Specifically, we find that the information dissemination time is naturally related to the spectral properties of the underlying network graph. Our results provide insight into how the graph topology affects the performance of the coding-based information dissemination algorithm

This paper addresses the need of semantic component in the grid environment to discover and describe the grid resources semantically. We propose semantic grid architecture by introducing a knowledge layer at the top of Gridbus broker architecture and thereby enabling broker to discover resources semantically. The semantic component in the knowledge layer enables semantic description of grid resources with the help of ontology template. The ontology template has been created using Protege-OWL editor for different types of computing resources in the grid environment. The Globus Toolkit's MDS is used to gather grid resource information and Protege-OWL libraries are used to dynamically create knowledge base of grid resources. Algernon inference engine is used for interacting with the knowledge base to discover suitable resources.

Geospatial data is playing an increasingly important role in many areas. But there are still many problems associated with the effective use of geospatial data. One is that geospatial data is usually large in volume and is archived at geographically distributed data centers. Another is that the low-level geospatial data contains raw data instead of information that can be directly applied by users. In this paper, we discuss solutions to some of the problems based on the grid and SOA technologies. Specifically, we propose an architecture that can effectively manage large volumes of distributed geospatial data, the concept of virtual geospatial data products, and a mechanism that supports on-demand productions of customized geospatial data products. A prototypical system based on the architecture and concept has been implemented and demonstrated

It has been an important task of discovering frequent fragments as particular patterns from large sequence databases generated from a variety of applications. In general, the patterns to be discovered may partially and asynchronously exist in sequences, and even contain gaps. In addition, it is necessary to collect the information regarding the locations and frequencies of the patterns. How to enumerate candidate patterns for evaluation without exponentially increasing the computation is another problem. In this paper, the modified periodicity transform is proposed to meet the requirements mentioned above. Also, a distributed computing framework is implemented to perform the mining task more efficiently. Both synthetic and biological sequences are utilized to examine the approach. The experimental results demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness the system.
