The advent of network coding promises to change many aspects of networking. Network coding moves away from the classical approach of networking, which treats networks as akin to physical transportation systems. We overview some of the main features of network coding that are most relevant to wireless networks. In particular, we discuss the fact that random distributed network coding is asymptotically optimal for wireless networks with and without packet erasures. These results are extremely general and allow packet loss correlation, such as may occur in fading wireless channels. The coded network lends itself, for multicast connections, to a cost optimization which not only outperforms traditional routing tree-based approaches, but also lends itself to a distributed implementation and to a dynamic implementation when changing conditions, such as mobility, arise. We illustrate the performance of such optimization methods for energy efficiency in wireless networks and propose some new directions for research in the area.

Grid computing presents a new trend to distributed computation and Internet applications, which can construct a virtual single image of heterogeneous resources, provide uniform application interface and integrate widespread computational resources into super, ubiquitous and transparent aggregation. In the adoption of Grid computing, China, who is facing more resource heterogeneity and other specific demands, has put much effort on both research and practical utilization. In this paper, we introduce the major China Grid research projects and their perspective applications. First we give the overview of the four government-sponsored programs in Grid, namely the China National Grid, ChinaGrid, NSFC Grid, and ShanghaiGrid. Then we present six representative ongoing Grid systems in details, which are categorized into Grid middleware and Grid application. This paper provides the general picture of Grid computing in China, and shows the great efforts, devotion and confidence in China to use Grid technology to boost the society, economics and scientific research. © Springer 2004.

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) computing is said to be the next wave of computing after client-server and web-based computing. It provides an opportunity to harness a lot of idle peer-resources such as desktop computers across the Internet, for solving large-scale computing applications. Each peer is autonomous and it needs incentive for sustained contribution of its resources to P2P applications. In addition, a flexible and efficient job scheduling is needed to harvest the idle computing power as cheaply and economically as possible. This paper introduces an economic based job scheduler for mapping jobs to resources in P2P computing environment. The scheduler has been implemented with the Compute Power Market (CPM) system developed using Sun JXTA P2P technology. Our scheduler can be configured depending on users’ quality of service requirements such as the deadline and budget constraints. Our scheduler follows a hierarchy scheme. The design allows multiple consumers and multiple providers to schedule and run jobs. To allow wider support for a wide variety of applications, the system is designed to allow easy ‘plug in’ of user applications. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

It is important for an incremental crawler to know how web pages evolve and the relation between their changing frequencies and the link-attributes such as indegrees. This paper proposes a model for incremental crawling and performs an experiment to verify the correlation between them, by monitoring the evolution of all the link-attributes of the web pages within one website. Particularly, we look deeply into one special kind of page named Index-pages. From the experiment, we can make four conclusions: (1) Pages which have bigger indegrees, outdegrees or PageRank values change more often, and these link-attributes all approximately obey a power-law distribution. (2) The link-attributes of pages seldom change though the pages change themselves. (3) A small proportion of the pages link to most of the vertexes in the web graph. (4) The Index-pages link to sizeable new pages in a website. These conclusions can be used to greatly enhance the performance of an incremental crawler, which is the foremost component for general search engines and web information stores.

We present a framework to specify and evaluate the coordinations in MAS. The framework draws on a MAS logic incorporating a number of temporal and dynamic operators, and has some important characteristics such as high-level, abstract, complete, and general-purpose. Based on the framework, the request/service cooperation models are studied and analyzed.

Although network intrusion detection systems (nIDS) are widely used, there is limited understanding of how these systems perform in different settings and how they should be evaluated. This paper examines how nIDS performance is affected by traffic characteristics, rulesets, string matching algorithms and processor architecture. The analysis presented in this paper shows that nIDS performance is very sensitive to these factors. Evaluating a nIDS therefore requires careful consideration of a fairly extensive set of scenarios. Our results also highlight potential dangers with the use of workloads based on combining widely-available packet header traces with synthetic packet content as well as with the use of synthetic rulesets.

With the development of networking technologies and the advent of the peer-to-peer computing paradigm, distributed file-sharing systems like Gnutella are becoming prevalent over time. JXTA, an interoperable and platform independent peer-to-peer computing infrastructure, has been adopted in an increasing number of network applications providing file-sharing and cooperative service. In this paper, we propose the metadata search layer which serves as an enhancement to the CMS (content manager service), a JXTA-based file-sharing service. Through the metadata search layer, more precise search of resources could be conducted as opposed to the inflexible keyword-based search mechanism employed in most of current file-sharing applications in use. A compact general-purpose query language is proposed to facilitate the use of standard metadata schema and bridge the gap between users and metadata descriptions of resources. We exemplify the advantage of the metadata-based search mechanism over the traditional keyword search with a proof-of-concept application.

In this paper, we propose a new framework based on data mining algorithms for building a Web-page recommender system. A recommender system is an intermediary program (or an agent) with a user interface that automatically and intelligently generates a list of information, which suits an individual's needs. Two information filtering methods for providing the recommended information are considered: (1) by analyzing the information content, i.e., content-based filtering, and (2) by referencing other user access behaviors, i.e., collaborative filtering. By using the data mining algorithms, the information filtering processes can be performed prior to the actual recommending process. As a result, the system response time could be improved and thus, making the framework scalable.

This paper proposes a technique for planar trajectory following for an autonomous aerial robot. A trajectory is modeled as a planar spline. A behavior-based control system which stabilizes the robot and enforces trajectory following, has been implemented and tested on an autonomous helicopter. Results from two flight experiments are presented. The trajectory tracking error is on the order of the size of the robot (1.8 m). Given the inherent error in GPS positioning, and environmental disturbances (wind), this is quite reasonable. © Fuji technology Press Ltd. In this paper we argue in favor of remote data access based on the principle of abstract data types. This paradigm has inherent advantages over the traditional file-oriented approach, especially when used in a ubiquitous computing environment, where data producers and consumers can be distributed and emerge dynamically. The 'datlet', a mobile storage device that implements the proposed approach, is presented in detail. We also discuss how a datlet can be embedded in everyday objects to create hybrid information objects, leading to an intuitive information manipulation model. © 2003 IEEE.
