Nowadays mobile devices enable users to have various ways to surf on the Internet and broadband communication channels facilitate applications of online multimedia. Most network real-time multimedia applications run on TCP/IP protocol stack. Although several protocols are proposed to handle mobility management on the network layer, real-time stream transmission still suffers from severe roaming interruption and hence playback performance is worsened. The paper analyzes the roaming delay and transmission throughput in detail and evaluates the effect of multiple elements constituting the whole roaming delay. A service codenamed Swift Roaming System (SROAM) is proposed to reduce the roaming delay and increase the average transmission throughput. Some initial experiment results are provided to support the effectiveness of the methods proposed in the system.

The "tangible file system"/sup 1/ is a document management and access infrastructure for the ubiquitous computing era. It provides a transparent user interface which takes advantage of physical user actions for the purpose of directory management, data sharing and document location tracking. This is achieved by digitally augmenting both documents and document containers to detect the location of physical information and to trigger corresponding update actions in the electronic world. The system is built using the Datlet [9] architecture to allow any 'tool-objects' to be applied to 'data-objects', thereby enabling an even more natural user interaction based on affordances.

We present a mechanism called the Markov model mediator (MMM) to facilitate the effective retrieval for content-based image retrieval (CBIR). Different from the common methods in content-based image retrieval, our stochastic mechanism not only takes into consideration the low-level image content features, but also learns high-level concepts from a set of training data, such as access frequencies and access patterns of the images. The advantage of our proposed mechanism is that it exploits the structured description of visual contents as well as the relative affinity measurements among the images. Consequently, it provides the capability to bridge the gap between the low-level features and high-level concepts. Our experimental results demonstrate that the MMM mechanism can effectively assist in retrieving more accurate results for user queries. © 2003 IEEE.

Scaling network intrusion detection to high network speeds can be achieved using multiple sensors operating in parallel coupled with a suitable load balancing traffic splitter. This paper examines a splitter architecture that incorporates two methods for improving system performance: the first is the use of early filtering where a portion of the packets is processed on the splitter instead of the sensors. The second is the use of locality buffering, where the splitter reorders packets in a way that improves memory access locality on the sensors. Our experiments suggest that early filtering reduces the number of packets to be processed by 32%, giving a 8% increase in sensor performance, while locality buffers improve sensor performance by about 10%. Combined together, the two methods result in an overall improvement of 20% while the performance of the slowest sensor is improved by 14%.

The problems related to supporting multicast connections with quality of service (QoS) requirements are studied. We investigate the problem of optimal resource allocation in the context of performance dependent costs. In this context each network element can offer several QoS guarantees, each associated with a different cost. This is a natural extension to the commonly used bi-criteria model, where each link is associated with a single delay and a single cost. This framework is simple yet strong enough to model many practical interesting networking problems. The fundamental multicast resource allocation problem under this framework is how to optimally allocate QoS requirements on the links of the multicast tree. One needs to partition the end-to-end QoS requirement along the various paths in a tree. The goal is to satisfy the end-to-end QoS requirement with minimum cost. Previous studies under this framework considered single-source multicast connections, where the end-to-end QoS requirement is specified from the source to all other multicast group members. In this paper we extend these results to the more general, and considerably harder case of multicast sessions, where the end-to-end requirement hold for every path between any two multicast group members. Our aim is to provide rigorous solutions, with proven performance guarantees, by way of algorithmic analysis. The problem under investigation is NP hard for general cost functions, thus we first present a pseudopolynomial exact solution. From this solution we derive two efficient /spl epsi/-approximate solutions. One achieves optimal cost, but may violate the end-to-end delay requirement by a factor of (1 + /spl epsi/), and the other strictly obeys the bounds and achieves a cost within a factor of (1+/spl epsi/) of the optimum. Furthermore, we present improved results for discrete cost functions, and give a simple linear-time exact polynomial solution for a specific, and practically interesting, family of convex

The proposed specification method denoted as hierarchical CoDesign Model allows a hierarchical system level specification of distributed embedded systems including both definition and reuse of IP cores. Input/Output Relations are introduced as a very general and powerful means of encapsulating internal implementation details and of describing data as well as control flow information on different levels of abstraction. Two novel algorithms are proposed, which allow deriving dynamically task descriptions for the IP encapsulation as well as flat specification models for design space exploration on different levels of detail. This reduces considerably the descriptive complexity of specifications and therewith the execution times of synthesis and design space exploration algorithms.

Web services define a new paradigm in present-day collaborative application development in enterprises, and span systems, networks, and organizations. Emerging computing infrastructures provide direct support for Web services technologies. A characteristic feature of the current efforts in the direction of Web services is the inclination towards providing rich and sophisticated tools for leveraging Web services functionality. Though this aids one in collaborative application "development" using Web services, from the point of view of application "design", it leaves much to be desired, when one considers closing in of the legendary "semantic gap" between a collaborative enterprise application and the infrastructure support. In this paper, we propose DEVISE: a methodology for building Web services based infrastructure for collaborative enterprises, comprising applications designed as a collection of Web services and a computer human interface.

In the distributed interactive simulation based on HLA/RTI, a key problem is how to establish information exchange and delivery mechanism among federates effectively to meet the requirements of system scalability. This paper discusses the basic data filtering mechanism of RTI1.3, then a new data distribution strategy is proposed: this algorithm computes region matching using grid-based method firstly, then it allocates multicast groups based on publisher dynamically. The simulation result show that the strategy proposed could reduce complexity of region matching and make use of multicast groups effectively.

Simultaneous multithreading (SMT) attempts to attain higher processor utilization by allowing instructions from multiple independent threads to coexist in a processor and compete for shared resources. Previous studies have shown, however, that its throughput may be limited by the number of threads. A reason is that a fixed thread scheduling policy cannot be optimal for the varying mixes of threads it may face in an SMT processor. Our adaptive dynamic thread scheduling (ADTS) was previously proposed to achieve higher utilization by allowing a detector thread to make use of wasted pipeline slots with nominal hardware and software costs. The detector thread adaptively switches between various fetch policies. Our previous study showed that a single fixed thread scheduling policy presents much room (some 30%) for improvement compared to an oracle-scheduled case. In this paper, we take a closer look at ADTS. We implemented the functional model of the ADTS and its software architecture to evaluate various heuristics for determining a better fetch policy for a next scheduling quantum. We report that performance could be improved by as much as 25%.
