The mission system of an aircraft is a complex real-time distributed system consisting of a mission control computer, different kinds of devices interconnected by a number of serial data buses. The complexity and real-time requirements of mission systems have motivated research into the application of formal techniques to investigate and predict the effects of upgrades on mission system behaviour. We report on a joint research project between the University of South Australia and Australia's Defence science and technology Organisation. In previous work we modelled a generic avionics mission system with coloured Petri nets and analysed the model using state spaces. Here, we describe how this model was refined and modified to obtain a coloured Petri net model for the AP-3C Orion maritime surveillance aircraft.

Since knowledge management becomes an important issue, knowledge management system (KMS) plays a crucial role to enhance the performance of knowledge management. It is a difficult work to build a KMS from scratch. In order to facilitate KMS reusability, we propose a scheme based on XML binding technology which can automatically generate the knowledge management components so that one may reengineer the system to accommodate with different requirements of other domains.

Multimedia data, typically image data, is increasing rapidly across the Internet and elsewhere. To keep pace with the increasing volumes of image information, new techniques need to be investigated to retrieve images intelligently and efficiently. Content-based image retrieval is always a challenging task. In this paper, a stochastic model, called Markov Model Mediator (MMM) mechanism, is used to model the searching and retrieval process for content-based image retrieval. Different from the common methods, our stochastic model carries out the searching and similarity computing process dynamically, taking into consideration not only the image content features but also other characteristics of images such as their access frequencies and access patterns. Experimental results demonstrate that the MMM mechanism together with the stochastic process can assist in retrieving more accurate results for user queries. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

A novel hierarchical approach to image retrieval is proposed. First, a color label histogram is used to effectively filter out the images that are not similar to the query image in color. The proposed color label histogram built by categorizing the pixel colors is computationally much more efficient compared to other approaches. Next, the class parameters of those images passing the first filter are used to identify the images similar to the query image in spatial layout. These class parameters are obtained automatically from the proposed unsupervised segmentation algorithm. Moreover, the wavelet decomposition coefficients are used to generate the initial partition for the segmentation algorithm. It doubles the segmentation performance. At the last stage, all images passing two filters are ranked based on the total normalized distance in color and spatial layout. The experiments show the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

An abstract multimedia semantic model called the multimedia augmented transition network (MATN) model is proposed to model the RTSP-based (real-time streaming protocol) multimedia presentation systems. RTSP provides a set of methods to support the functionality of "VCR-like" remote control on the client side so that users are allowed to control playback of the streaming media. The MATN model is used to model RTSP actions as well as temporal relations and synchronization control of the media streams. The advantages of using the MATN model are its simplicity, effectiveness, and ease of modification. Furthermore, a formal definition of the MATN model and modeling of RTSP actions using the MATN model are presented in detail. © 2002 IEEE.

Labscape, a ubiquitous computing environment for cell biologists, was implemented twice: once using only standard tools for distributed systems (TCP sockets and shared file systems) and once using ***, a runtime system designed specifically to support ubiquitous applications. We analyze Labscape in terms of the system properties that are required to provide a fluid user experience. Though the two implementations are functionally and architecturally similar, we found a significant difference in the degree to which they each exhibited the required properties. The fact that *** was not designed specifically with Labscape in mind yet was found to support the application’s requirements well suggests that ubiquitous applications have many aspects in common, and can benefit from a system support layer for coping with dynamic environments. We present, in detail, the concepts embodied in *** that we have found to be most important for Labscape, and how some of these concepts might be extended. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

RoboCup is an international game and academic activity which focuses on improving the education and research of distributed AI, intelligent robotics, machine learning and other related fields. To stimulate the student's interests of AI research and introduce the RoboCup games to more students, we transplant the RoboCup to an educational platform for students to study and research. This paper shows the structure and design of the whole platform, the specific implementation of basic modules on the educational platform. The platform is divided into three parts: low-level module, libraries, and program scheme. Students should work in the programming scheme part, build the basic skill and top-level strategy layer. This paper describes the main theory of the basic skills such as dribble, kick, and shoot, including the distributed planning in realizing these skills. The top-level strategy part analyzes the realization of several basic strategies and machine learning's impact on the game. We also provide the method and framework for implementing the basic skills and top-level strategy, called the qsinghuAeolus program. Finally, we show the educational value of the platform in RoboCup simulation games.

A cooperative vehicle collision warning system is made possible by the progress in advanced positioning systems and wireless communication technology. We report our work in developing a cooperative intersection collision warning system that is not limited by the requirement of line-of-sight. The novel elements of the system include the use of a dynamic ad hoc wireless network for peer-to-peer data sharing, a new intersection collision warning algorithm, and a flexible and extensible software architecture and system design. The very same system is also capable of collision warning for other scenarios such as frontal and rear-end. Further, the tunable parameters in the algorithm make it possible for the system to adapt to the preference and capability of each individual driver.

Research activities for combining portable computer technology and wireless communication technology are in progress to realize mobile computing environments. Among the various strategies necessary for mobile computing environments, the location management strategies are particularly emphasized especially for PCN environments. Location management strategy-for PCN environments, which is mostly based on the IS-41 standards, brings an issue that additional network traffic are generated to deliver update messages to the home location server whenever a mobile host changes its location server. We propose an innovative update strategy and a search strategy that resolves the problem shown in the IS-41 scheme. Also, this paper compares the performance of the proposed scheme with the IS-41-based scheme.
