Standard IP multicast makes no provision for authenticating or authorizing the participant hosts, nor for ensuring confidentiality of the data stream. An architecture for achieving these goals is proposed, based on the use of an extended version of the Host Identity Protocol. The applicability of the model is demonstrated for peer-to-peer multicasting and for non-shared media access networks. A formal validation of a two-layer peer-to-peer network based on this architecture has been completed.

The WATERS network (WATer and Environmental Research Systems network) will be an integrated real-time distributed observing system which will enable academic and government scientists, engineers, educators, and practitioners to advance effective management of our nation's water resources by understanding human interactions with water and the natural and built environment. WATERS will provide easily accessible real time environmental data as well as analysis tools to engineers, scientists, educators, K- graduate students and policymakers so they can better understand how water quantity, quality and related components of the hydrologic cycle are impacted by natural and human influences. The WATERS strategic plan will be completed by July 2007 and requires constituent input. This paper describes the draft Conceptual Design and the Education Plan of WATERS network. This paper will highlight the potential impact of WATERS on undergraduate and graduate environmental engineering education in order to elicit input from the environmental engineering education community on how WATERS network could better meet the future needs of undergraduate and graduate students and educators. Semantic Web is a vision for future of the current Web which aims at automation, integration and reuse of data among different Web applications. Access to resources on the Semantic Web can not be controlled in a safe way unless the access decision takes into account the semantic relationships among entities in the data model under this environment. Decision making for permitting or denying access requests by assuming entities in isolation and not considering their interrelations may result in security violations. In this paper, we present a Semantic Based Access Control model (SBAC) which considers this issue in the decision making process. To facilitate the propagation of policies in these three domains, we show how different semantic interrelations can be reduced to the subsumption problem. This reduction enhances the space and time complexity of the access control mechanisms which are based on SBAC. Our evaluations of the SBAC model along with experimental results on a sample implementation of the access control system show that the proposed model is very promising.

The distributed nature and complexity of computer networks and various services provided via them, makes the networks vulnerable to numerous attacks. The TCP/IP presumptions which are based on using this protocol to provide a simple, open communication infrastructure in an academic and collaborative environment, causes this protocol lack of built-in mechanisms for authentication, integrity and privacy. Even though in the last few years a more systematic approach to TCP/IP network security problem has been followed, a formal approach to this problem is lacking. In this paper, we propose using Description Logics as a formal model which could be used to analyze TCP/IP networks against attacks. Moreover we have presented a case study which models one of famous attack categories, i.e. Man in the Middle (MTM). This model lets automatically verify and proof network safety or vulnerability against this attack. © 2006 IEEE.

We propose in this paper, an optimized, polymorphic, hybrid multicast routing protocol for MANET. The protocol proposed is based on the principle of adaptability and multibehavioral modes of operations. It is able to change behavior in different situations in order to improve certain metrics like maximizing battery life, reducing communication delays, improving deliverability, etc. This new polymorphic protocol attempts to benefit of the high efficiency of proactive behavior and the low cost of network traffic of the reactive behavior, while being power, mobility and vicinity density aware. The protocol is augmented by an optimization scheme, adapted from the one proposed for the optimized link state routing protocol (OLSR) in which only selected neighbor nodes propagate control packets to reduce the amount of control overhead. Extensive simulations and comparison to peer protocols demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed protocol in improving performance and in extending battery power longevity. © 2006 IEEE.

Machine learning and data mining algorithms are increasingly being used in the intrusion detection systems (IDS), but their performances are laggard to some extent especially applied in network based intrusion detection: the larger load of network traffic monitoring requires more efficient algorithm in practice. In this paper, we propose and design an anomaly intrusion detection (AID) system based on the vector quantization (VQ) which is widely used for data compression and high-dimension multimedia data index. The design procedure optimizes the performance of intrusion detection by jointly accounting for accurate usage profile modeling by the VQ codebook and fast similarity measures between feature vectors to reduce the computational cost. The former is just the key of getting high detection rate and the later is the footstone of guaranteeing efficiency and real-time style of intrusion detection. Experiment comparisons to other related researches show that the performance of intrusion detection is improved greatly. Mobile ad hoc networking offers convenient infrastructure-less communication over the shared wireless channels. The major research efforts in the area of Mobile Ad hoc network (MANET) focus on developing efficient routing protocols assuming that IP addresses of mobile hosts have been already configured before joining the network. Providing security for IP address auto-configuration in MANET is still an open problem. Existing solutions for IP address autoconfiguration in MANET do not address security issues. However, it may disserve network security if there is not a reliable authentication mechanism, e.g. an attacker may spoof other nodes and hijack their traffic. Unlike their wired counterpart, infrastructure-less ad hoc networks do not have a clear line of defense, and every node must be prepared for encountering with an adversary. Therefore, a centralized or hierarchical network security solution does not work well. This paper describes the state of research in secure address auto-configuration problem and analyzes the current existing solutions. © 2006 IEEE.

With the rapid development of the Internet, Web log mining, which is used to find useful information about users from Web log files, has become a heat issue of research. The aim of association rule mining is to find interesting and useful patterns in a transaction base. This paper makes use of variable precision rough set theory to retrieve the associated rules from Web log and applies the rules to the prediction of users' behaviors. Experiments indicate that the prediction precision is better than those existing methods © 2006 IEEE.

Highly security-critical system should possess features of continuous service. We present a new Robust Disaster Recovery System Model （RDRSM）. Through strengthening the ability of safe communications, RDRSM guarantees the secure and reliable command on disaster recovery. Its self-supervision capability can monitor the integrality and security of disaster recovery system itself. By 2D and 3D rea-time visible platform provided by GIS, GPS and RS, the model makes the using, management and maintenance of disaster recovery system easier. RDRSM possesses predominant features of security, robustness and controllability. And it can be applied to highly security-critical environments such as E-government and bank. Conducted by RDRSM, an important E-government disaster recovery system has been constructed successfully. The feasibility of this model is verified by practice. We especially emphasize the significance of some components of the model, such as risk assessment, disaster recovery planning, system supervision and robust communication support.

This paper presents a new full-search block-matching algorithm: Multi-stage Interval-based Motion Estimation algorithm (MIME). The proposed algorithm is a block based motion estimation algorithm that utilizes successive elimination technique. We define two approximate functions, as the upper and lower boundaries of the interval that includes the Conventional distortion metric SAD. Each stage in the proposed algorithm;except for the last stage;incorporates low resolution pixels for the boundary functions calculations. The final stage is a full resolution block matching stage. MIME has a high probability of finding the optimal motion vector at any stage of the algorithm. The proposed algorithm reduces the computational complexity by successively eliminating non-candidate blocks from the search window at each stage. This computational reduction leads to enhanced performance in terms of low power consumption and fast motion vector estimation. A low power VLSI implementation of the algorithm is also presented in this paper. Simulation results on benchmark video sequences shows that MIME algorithm eliminates almost 88% of the candidate blocks after only two interval based stages. © Springer Science + Business Media, Inc. 2006.
