With the availability of various wireless link-layer technologies, such as Bluetooth, WLAN and GPRS, in one wireless device, ubiquitous communications can be realized through managing vertical handoff in the environment of wireless overlay networks. In this paper, we develop a ubiquitous video streaming system through wireless overlay networks. One of the main features of the developed system is that it can support seamless communications. In other words, the developed system enables wireless devices to roam among different wireless networks without affecting the ongoing multimedia applications. Another feature is that our developed video streaming application can be adaptively adjusted to match the significant change of wireless link characteristics due to vertical handoff. Our contribution lies in the integration of various existing techniques to build a real system. © 2005 IEEE.

Semantic video indexing and summarization using subtitles

How to build semantic index for multimedia data is an important and challenging problem for multimedia information systems. In this paper, we present a novel approach to build a semantic video index for digital videos by analyzing the subtitle files of DVD/DivX videos. The proposed approach for building semantic video index consists of 3 stages, viz., script extraction, script partition and script vector representation. First, the scripts are extracted from the subtitle files that are available in the DVD/DivX videos. Then, the extracted scripts are partitioned into segments. Finally, the partitioned script segments are converted into a tfidf vector based representation, which acts as the semantic index. The efficiency of the semantic index is demonstrated through video retrieval and summarization applications. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach is very promising. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

In this paper, we address the problem of image retrieval when the query is in the form of scaled and rotated regions of images in the database. The solution lies in identifying points that are invariant to scaling and rotation and determining a robust distance measure that returns images that contain the query regions. We use the Harris-Laplacian detector to detect the interest points which are then matched with similar points in the image database using a novel fuzzy distance measure. Images with closely matching interest points are further refined using a cross-correlation measure that results in the final set of retrieval images. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposal image retrieval strategy. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

MPEG-21 user cases bring out a scenario of Universal Multimedia Access which is becoming the reality: people use different devices such as desktop PC, personal digital assistant as well as smartphone to access multimedia information. Viewing images on mobile devices is more and more popular than before. However, due to the screen size limitation, the experience of viewing large image on small screen devices is awkward. In this paper, an enhanced JPEG2000 image adaptation system is proposed for MPEG-21 digital item adaptation. The image is adapted considering both visual attentive region(s) of image and terminal screen size. Through the subjective testing, the system has been approved to be a solution of efficiently displaying large images in different devices. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

Integrated Business Support System of digital TV, also called Subscriber Management System(SMS), includes subscriber management, program purchase, balancing charges, engineering construction management. It also transmits commands of assignment or cancellation of authorization to CA system by interfacing with CA, which then passes these commands to scrambler, and control of acceptance of Digital TV program is accomplished. Unique CA is required over a whole province, program streams, SI, ECM, EMM are transmitted through SDH network. This paper discusses its operation mode, software architecture and network services of SMS. © 2005 IEEE.

The era of 1: 1 educational computing environment where each student has one mobile computing device is not far away. When such technology designed for individuals is applied to group learning, several student grouping problems could be encountered. In this paper, three issues are identified to illustrate the vision of the 1:2 educational computing environments. In a 1:2 classroom, besides the mobile devices, students also have their own computing desks, i.e. MatrixDesks, to solve the potential student grouping problems. By putting MatrixDesks together, a small group can form a shared working space with the combined desktops immediately and they can use their own digital pens as the input devices to work on and talk over it. Meanwhile, the students use their mobile devices to handle the related individual tasks. MatrixDesks is a coordination of applying the mobile computing and invisible computing to collaborative learning, which will lead to the accomplishment of 1:2 educational computing environments.

The growing complexity of distributed systems in terms of hardware components, operating system, communication and application software and the huge amount of dependencies among them have caused an increase in demand for distributed management systems. An efficient distributed management system needs to work effectively even in face of incomplete management information, uncertain situations, and dynamic changes. In this paper, Bayesian networks are proposed to model dependencies between managed objects in distributed systems. The strongest dependency route (SDR) algorithm is developed for backward inference in Bayesian networks. The SDR algorithm can track the strongest causes and trace the strongest routes between particular effects and its causes, the strongest dependency of causes can be also achieved by the algorithm. Thus, the backward inference provides an efficient mechanism in fault locating, and is beneficial for performance management. © 2005 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.

It is an important research topic to improve detection rate and reduce false positive rate of detection model in the field of intrusion detection. This paper adopts an improved boosting method to enhance generalization performance of intrusion detection model based on rule learning algorithm, and presents a boosting intrusion detection rule learning algorithm (BIDRLA). The experiment results on the standard intrusion detection dataset validate the effectiveness of BIDRLA. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

This paper proposes an adaptive on-line intrusion detection model based on incremental rule learning. This model can make self-learning over the ever-emerged new network behavior examples and dynamically modify behavior profile of the model, which overcomes the disadvantage that the traditional static detecting model must relearn over all the old and new examples, even can't relearn because of limited memory size. The experiment results validate the feasibility and effectivity of the presented adaptive intrusion detection model. © 2005 IEEE.

The P2P network and its applications have the characters of dynamic and self-management, so the existing technologies do not solve the security issues of P2P network appropriately. In this paper, we describe new techniques that overcome many of the cited difficulties. We propose a new security architecture named SAP2P to address the security problems in P2P network. The core of SAP2P is based on a trust management named ExSPKI that establishes the trust relationships between peers. This architecture is adapted to the features of P2P network. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.
