In this paper, we propose a novel rate-distortion (R-D) model for leaky prediction based FGS (L-FGS) video coding. The proposed R-D model considers not only the distortion introduced in the current frame but also the propagated distortion due to leaky prediction. The entire system consists of both offline and online processes. During the offline stage, we perform the L-FGS encoding and collect the necessary feature information for the later online R-D estimation. At the online stage, given the transmission bandwidth at that time, we can quickly estimate the R-D curves of a sequence of consecutive video frames based on the proposed R-D model. An excellent property of our proposed R-D model is that even when applying the model for a long video sequence without any update of the actual distortion values, the estimation error is still very small and the error is not accumulated. Experimental results show that the estimated distortion matches the actual distortion very well under different channel conditions. © Springer-Verlag 2004.

The new MPEG-21 standard defines a multimedia framework to enable transparent and augmented use of multimedia resources across heterogeneous networks and devices used by different communities. In this paper, we incorporated the perceived motion energy (PME) model into the proposed MPEG-21 digital item adaptation framework for frame dropping in H.264 encoded video adaptation. There are two advantages of this work, one is the use of PME model to reduce the viewer's perceived motion jitter due to frame dropping to a minimum. The other is the adaptation nodes can easily apply frame dropping operations without knowledge of detailed encoding syntax of H.264 videos.

Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 (HMIPv6) has been proposed to accommodate frequent mobility of the mobile nodes and reduce the signaling load in the Internet. Though it is being considered as an efficient local mobility management protocol, its performance may vary widely depending on the various mobility and traffic related parameters. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the effects of these parameters and conduct in-depth performance study of HMIPv6. For the analysis of HMIPv6, we present a new analytical method using the mobility model based on imbedded Markov chain and a simplistic hierarchical network model. Based on these models, we analytically derive the location update cost (i.e.,binding update cost plus binding renewal cost), packet tunnelling cost, and total signaling cost, respectively, in HMIPv6. In addition, we investigate the effects of various parameters such as the speed of a mobile node, binding lifetime, and packet arrival rate on the total signaling cost generated by a mobile node during its average MAP domain residence time. The analytical results demonstrate that the signaling load generated by HMIPv6 decreases as the speed of a mobile node and binding lifetime get larger, and its packet arrival rate gets smaller. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2004.

Server replication is an approach often used to improve service access efficiency and availability for a large number of clients. This paper adopts a simple service model and investigates a set of efficient algorithms for server selection in an anycast group under the condition of imprecise network delay. The algorithms use ticket-based probing approach to search the path with short delay and probe the server load at the same time and try to optimize the server and path delay at the same time. The simulation results demonstrate that our algorithms are efficient in terms of server response time for sever selection compared with several other server selection algorithms.

Detection of salient regions in images is useful for object based image retrieval and browsing applications. This task can be done using methods based on the human visual attention model [1], where feature maps corresponding to color, intensity and orientation capture the corresponding salient regions. In this paper, we propose a strategy for combining the salient regions from the individual feature maps based on a new Composite Saliency Indicator (CSI) which measures the contribution of each feature map to saliency. The method also carries out a dynamic weighting of individual feature maps. The experiment results indicate that this combination strategy reflects the salient regions in an image more accurately. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

As Internet growing exponentially, MPLS technology providing IP services has been developing to support highly demanded quality of services. For such demands, the MPLS networks are required with high reliability in case of network failure. One scheme for high reliability is LSP path protection in MPLS networks. In this paper we propose a mechanism of dynamic path protection, which allow traffic bypass the failure on link and/or node. Since the proposed mechanism chooses an appropriate path from already established paths without setting-up new backup path, fast path protection is performed. The proposed protection mechanism can be applied into MPLS networks with multiple failures for high reliability.

In this study, an English contest event with across-classroom mode was held in the connected classroom equipped with wireless remote controller (EduClick). The learning scenario of contest event embedded into event-driven learning model is designed by integrating activity-centered design and learner-centered design to conduct students to learn individually before event and collaboratively participate with classmates during the event stage. The contest event is held by the activity-centered design. A Web site with Web-based content and online testing system is built by learner-centered design. We desire the students to learn for participating in the event. Connected classroom is an environment constructed by connecting classrooms located in the same or different schools, or schools of different countries. More various learning activities could be held in the environment. Here, we built a prototype of connected classroom using the simplest wireless and mobile technologies and held contest event.

With the emergence of information technology, wireless communication and mobile devices are the newest applications in education. The wireless technology enhanced classroom (WiTEC) integrates wireless local area network, mobile learning devices, and client-server architecture to support instruction and learning activities in classroom. This paper introduces the framework of three learning activity levels, namely learning function, learning episode, and learning flow, as the basis to design and develop an integrated system to support various kinds of learning activities in WiTEC. A teacher can use the system to form new learning flows before class and to implement them in class. A two-stage evaluation was conducted in three elementary classes to investigate the usability and feasibility of the proposed system. The participated teachers indicated that the integrity mechanism of three learning activity levels eases the burden of preparing, implementing, and reviewing instruction and learning.

Sperm whales are known to dive to a depth of over two thousand meters and it is also known that they emit loud impulsive broadband sounds called "clicks" during their diving. However, little is known about sperm whales' behavior because of a shortage of methods to observe them during their dives. Our attempt is to use the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) as an observation platform for sperm whales. The tasks of AUV are to recognize sperm whales individually and track them in real time by listening to sperm whale's clicks with 4-hydrophone array and detecting its direction. As the initial stage for these objectives, we set up an experiment for our observation system using a boat instead of AUV and a support boat. In the middle of August 2003, we carried out an experiment to test our observation system off Ogasawara Islands. Two boats, each with a hydrophone array were deployed mainly in the west or southeast of Chichijima Island in an ocean depth of about 1000 meters. During the experiments over five days we encountered at least fourteen sperm whales. The result of this experiment indicates that our observation system is suitable for tracking sperm whales in sub-real time. We also acquired sufficient sound data of sperm whale's vocalization for off-line verification. The analysis of the results is presently underway. This experiment can be considered as the preliminary step to apply this kind of technique to develop innovative observation for underwater ecosystem system using AUVs.
