This paper explores the run time performance improvements using different GCC optimization flags in program compilation. As multi-core microprocessor systems replacing legacy single-core ones, tremendous effort is needed to address to optimize the associated compilers for newly designed architectures in order to suit them for running parallel programming on multiple cores. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to address this challenge by designing an optimum distributed multi-agent system to perform compiler optimization. A multi-agent framework is adopted to utilize random and genetic algorithm-based search algorithm to find the best GCC optimization flags for a given program. The framework is highly scalable and can be extended with distributed system concept to perform code compilation in parallel to find the best-optimized code sequence in a short amount of time. The initial performance results have promising indicators which clearly show that the performance improvement is achieved. © 2021 IEEE.

A data sender in an IP based network is only capable to efficiently use a network path if it knows the packet size limit of the path, i.e., the Path Maximum Transmission Unit (PMTU). The IETF recently specified a PMTU discovery framework for transport protocols like QUIC. This paper complements this specification by presenting a search algorithm. In addition, it defines several metrics and shows results of analyses for the algorithm with various PMTU candidate sequences using these metrics. We integrated the PMTU discovery with our algorithm into a QUIC simulation model. This paper describes the integration and presents measurements obtained by simulations. © 2021 ACM.

Hand shadow puppetry, also known as shadowgraphy or ombromanie, is a form of theatrical art and storytelling where hand shadows are projected onto flat surfaces to create illusions of living creatures. The skilled performers create these silhouettes by hand positioning, finger movements, and dexterous gestures to resemble shadows of animals and objects. Due to the lack of practitioners and a seismic shift in people’s entertainment standards, this art form is on the verge of extinction. To facilitate its preservation and proliferate it to a wider audience, we introduce HASPER, a novel dataset consisting of 15,000 images of hand shadow puppets across 15 classes extracted from both professional and amateur hand shadow puppeteer clips. We provide a detailed statistical analysis of the dataset and employ a range of pretrained image classification models to establish baselines. Our findings show a substantial performance superiority of skip-connected convolutional models over attention-based transformer architectures. We also find that lightweight models, such as MOBILENETV2, suited for mobile applications and embedded devices, perform comparatively well. We surmise that such low-latency architectures can be useful in developing ombromanie teaching tools, and we create a prototype application to explore this surmission. Keeping the best-performing model RESNET34 under the limelight, we conduct comprehensive feature-spatial, explainability, and error analyses to gain insights into its decision-making process. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first documented dataset and research endeavor to preserve this dying art for future generations, with computer vision approaches. In this paper, dispersion decreased profiled tapered fiber is designed whose dispersion characteristics and soliton propagation is investigated numerically using Darboux transformation. With the development and application of computer vision, many target detection networks are applied to the detection of floating objects in rivers. For the detection problems such as small targets easily missed and misdetected in water surface floating object detection tasks and difficult to deploy models. An edge computing-oriented approach to river floater detection is proposed. First, a four-fold down-sampling feature layer is added to the YOLOv5 network which enhances more target detail features and improves the detection capability of small objects. Second, CA (Coordinate Attention) is added to the Backbone to suppress background noise interference, and different pooling is used to accommodate different hierarchical features. Then, a bilinear interpolation method is adopted for up-sampling to avoid the loss of small object features. Design a data enhancement algorithm for small targets based on Mosaic to increase the number of small objects and enrich the training background. Finally, for the edge computing architecture platform, the channel pruning algorithm is used to prune and compress the model structure to adapt to the computing capability of edge devices. The experimental results show that the method can effectively improve the detection capability of the network for floating objects on the water surface. The detection accuracy can reach 93.6%, and the detection speed can be maintained at 36 frames per second, which can achieve high-precision real-time detection of floating objects on the water surface. © 2023 IEEE.

As a key technology of intelligent satellite-enabled services in B5G or 6G networks, deploying Deep Neural Networks (DNN) models on satellites has been a notable trend, catering to the daily demand for extensive computing-intensive and latency-sensitive tasks. The computing resources are strategically deployed on satellites where sensor data is generated or collected, facilitating the fine-grained computational inference of DNN-based tasks. However, no prior study has comprehensively explored the crucial inference challenges-e.g., the trade-off between the number of tasks completed and accuracy and partitioning models in multi-exit models-in the resource-constrained space environment. Effective scheduling frameworks cater to various streams of inference tasks are scarce because inference performance may deviate from the ideal situation due to changes in task system status, such as task profiles and network state. To this end, we first formulate a gain-aware in-orbit computing inference problem to strike a proper trade-off between inference latency and the number of tasks completed by dynamically selecting optimal early exit points and model partitioning points. We propose an offline dynamic programming-based algorithm that provides an effective solution when comprehensive system details are to be predicted. We have developed an online learning-based method to schedule inference tasks with uncertain and dynamic system statuses in real-world situations. Our evaluation shows that, compared to baseline methods, the online learning-based algorithm can improve task gain by an average of 87.3% across various tasks. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Light field visualization commonly provides a single content over the entire field of view. However, the angularly-selective nature of the technology enables the simultaneous visualization of different contents at different viewing angles. Yet segmenting the valid viewing area comes with content interference as well in forms of separation zones, resulting invalid viewing domains. In this paper, we introduce a study on the separation zone of split-domain light field visualization. We created a static-content-based scenario in which we split the valid viewing area into two distinct domains, with a separation zone in between them. This was achieved by merging two light field contents in the middle with an instantaneous switch. The resulting visualization on a light field display was captured by a DSLR camera from two viewing distances, and it was compared to the crosstalk effect caused by insufficient angular resolution.

To capture real-time data from Wireless Sensor Network Applications, utilizing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is becoming popular for minimizing end-to-end latency and reducing packet loss issues with extended network lifetime. Existing works in the literature are either limited by using a static sink or ground vehicle-supported mobile slink. In this paper, we introduce Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) as mobile sinks moving around multiple circular ring canals on the basic starfish routing backbone (bSFR). We also develop generalized mathematical equations for determining an optimal number of ring canals required for a terrain with certain width and length along with their radii. The results of experiments carried out in Network Simulator version 2 (NS2) depict that the proposed routing model significantly improves the performances in terms of end-to-end latency and network lifetime.

In the vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET) environment, the constant changes in traffic systems due to the real-time mobility of vehicles pose a challenge in developing communication strategies that can swiftly adapt to dynamic topological variations. Traditional protocols such as CSMA/CD offer dynamic access to shared media, but their efficiency is compromised by CSMA/CA's collision avoidance strategy, which reduces channel use due to its backoff algorithm. This paper introduces a novel Graph Convolutional Network-based Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning MAC protocol (GM-MAC) for vehicular networks. Unlike the Neuro-DCF protocol, GMMAC incorporates local vehicular data directly, enabling more context-aware learning. Compared to other GNN-based MARL approaches like GraphComm, GMMAC better handles real-time changes and interactions among vehicles. Experimental results show that GMMAC significantly improves successful transmission numbers and reduces collisions, outperforming traditional CSMA/CA methods and other MARL approaches without GCN integration.

RGB-Depth Fusion GAN for Indoor Depth Completion

The raw depth image captured by the indoor depth sensor usually has an extensive range of missing depth values due to inherent limitations such as the inability to perceive transparent objects and limited distance range. The incomplete depth map burdens many downstream vision tasks, and a rising number of depth completion methods have been proposed to alleviate this issue. While most existing methods can generate accurate dense depth maps from sparse and uniformly sampled depth maps, they are not suitable for complementing the large contiguous regions of missing depth values, which is common and critical. In this paper, we design a novel two-branch end-to-end fusion network, which takes a pair of RGB and incomplete depth images as input to predict a dense and completed depth map. The first branch employs an encoder-decoder structure to regress the local dense depth values from the raw depth map, with the help of local guidance information extracted from the RGB image. In the other branch, we propose an RGB-depth fusion GAN to transfer the RGB image to the fine-grained textured depth map. We adopt adaptive fusion modules named W-AdaIN to propagate the features across the two branches, and we append a confidence fusion head to fuse the two outputs of the branches for the final depth map. Extensive experiments on NYU-Depth V2 and SUN RGB-D demonstrate that our proposed method clearly improves the depth completion performance, especially in a more realistic setting of indoor environments with the help of the pseudo depth map.
