Current methods in mapping the availability of WiFi networks, such as crowdsourcing platforms (e.g. Project BASS and CoverageMap) and dedicated wardriving, face limitations in terms of data recency, volume, and cost-effectiveness. Due to the downsides of both these methods, opportunistic wardriving is proposed which utilizes public utility vehicles (PUVs). This study investigates the feasibility of PUVs as potential wardriving vehicles for opportunistic coverage mapping. This method is cost-efficient and removes the problem of data recency because of its continuous daily trips. The findings suggest that opportunistic wardriving with PUVs is viable for wardriving with its capability to detect a high volume of access points (APs). Multiple runs within the University of the Philippines Diliman campus showed the PUVs’ effectiveness in detecting a significant number of APs, with higher success rates at closer distances. Comparatively, warwalking detected fewer APs, but there was a significant overlap between the methods. The study also highlighted significant differences in detected AP types, with wardriving finding more mobile hotspots and miscellaneous devices than warwalking. Overall, the results underline the effectiveness of PUVs in providing extensive WiFi coverage data and further enhancements to the detection system could optimize the approach. ©2024 IEEE.

The Message Passing Interface (MPI) is a widely accepted standard for parallel computing on distributed ***, MPI implementations can contain defects that impact the reliability and performance of parallelapplications. Detecting and correcting these defects is crucial, yet there is a lack of published models specificallydesigned for correctingMPI defects. To address this, we propose a model for detecting and correcting MPI defects(DC_MPI), which aims to detect and correct defects in various types of MPI communication, including blockingpoint-to-point (BPTP), nonblocking point-to-point (NBPTP), and collective communication (CC). The defectsaddressed by the DC_MPI model include illegal MPI calls, deadlocks (DL), race conditions (RC), and messagemismatches (MM). To assess the effectiveness of the DC_MPI model, we performed experiments on a datasetconsisting of 40 MPI codes. The results indicate that the model achieved a detection rate of 37 out of 40 codes,resulting in an overall detection accuracy of 92.5%. Additionally, the execution duration of the DC_MPI modelranged from 0.81 to 1.36 s. These findings show that the DC_MPI model is useful in detecting and correctingdefects in MPI implementations, thereby enhancing the reliability and performance of parallel applications. TheDC_MPImodel fills an important research gap and provides a valuable tool for improving the quality ofMPI-basedparallel computing systems.

Image processing, specifically extracting regions of interest, being a costly operation would benefit from a method of storing its output region and input image data in a database for future querying so as to prevent re-execution of the processing operation. This study investigates the performance of using built-in spatial queries found in a couple of modern Database systems to store and retrieve specific regions of image data. After testing two widely used Database software: MongoDB and Postgresql, results have shown that MongoDB performs better in terms of average and tail latency as well as efficiency in disk space consumption. © 2022 IEEE.

Cancers have emerged as a significant concern due to their impact on public health and society. The examination and interpretation of tissue sections stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) play a crucial role in disease assessment, particularly in cases like gastric cancer. Microsatellite instability (MSI) is suggested to contribute to the carcinogenesis of specific gastrointestinal tumors. However, due to the nonspecific morphology observed in H&E-stained tissue sections, MSI determination often requires costly evaluations through various molecular studies and immunohistochemistry methods in specialized molecular pathology laboratories. Despite the high cost, international guidelines recommend MSI testing for gastrointestinal cancers. Thus, there is a pressing need for a new diagnostic modality with lower costs and widespread applicability for MSI detection. This study aims to detect MSI directly from H&E histology slides in gastric cancer, providing a cost-effective alternative. The performance of well-known deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) and a proposed architecture are compared. Medical image datasets are typically smaller than benchmark datasets like ImageNet, necessitating the use of off-the-shelf DCNN architectures developed for large datasets through techniques such as transfer learning. Designing an architecture proportional to a custom dataset can be tedious and may not yield desirable results. In this work, we propose an automatic method to extract a lightweight and efficient architecture from a given heavy architecture (e.g., well-known off-the-shelf DCNNs) proportional to a specific dataset. To predict MSI instability, we extracted the MicroNet architecture from the Xception network using the proposed method and compared its performance with other well-known architectures. As the Industry 4.0 shifts towards the adoption of autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) in warehouses, decentralized decision-making has become a key design principle. Multi-robot task allocation (MRTA) is a problem that involves assigning tasks to AMRs while optimizing the performance of the system. However, modeling decentralized MRTA applications for optimization without a central instance poses significant challenges due to the autonomy and flexibility of AMRs. In this paper, we propose a simulative approach to address the fleet sizing problem combined with decentralized MRTA applications for AMRs. Based on simulation data, models have been developed that predict key performance indicators (KPIs) for different warehouse layouts and requirements, using techniques from machine learning and mathematical optimization. The model represents KPIs such as constraint satisfaction and utilization rates in a decentralized MRTA scenario including a self-organizing material flow application. Based on this model, we introduce a fleet size selection mechanism. This research contributes to the field of Industry 4.0 by providing a generalizable simulative approach that is adaptable to flexible warehouse environments, allowing for the application of any MRTA algorithm. Moreover, this approach allows the integration of different KPIs, facilitating the adaptation of requirements. © 2023 IEEE.

Kubernetes provides several functions that can help service providers to deal with the management of complex container-based applications. However, most of these functions need a time-consuming and costly customization process to address service-specific requirements. The adoption of Digital Twin (DT) solutions can ease the configuration process by enabling the evaluation of multiple configurations and custom policies by means of simulation-based what-if scenario analysis. To facilitate this process, this paper proposes KubeTwin, a framework to enable the definition and evaluation of DTs of Kubernetes applications. Specifically, this work presents an innovative simulation-based inference approach to define accurate DT models for a Kubernetes environment. We experimentally validate the proposed solution by implementing a DT model of an image recognition application that we tested under different conditions to verify the accuracy of the DT model. The soundness of these results demonstrates the validity of the KubeTwin approach and calls for further investigation. © 2023 IEEE.

The article discusses the problem of parametric identification of interval discrete models of complex objects. A new scheme of parallel computations for solving the problem of parametric identification based on the behavioral model of an artificial bee colony is proposed and justified. The effectiveness of the proposed parallel computing scheme is considered using the example of parametric identification of a mathematical model of the anaerobic microbiological fermentation process in biogas plants. A nonlinear second-order discrete model describes the dynamics of residual organic waste mass in the biogas reactor during fermentation. According to the results of the experiments, a 2-fold acceleration of the algorithm's computational time was achieved. © 2023 IEEE.

As renewable energy resources are integrated into the power grid to address the global energy and climate crisis, local energy markets have emerged as a possible solution. In such markets, peers in a smart grid trade locally generated energy. To reduce the stress on the grid caused by the volatility of renewable energy sources, households use electric batteries to maximize their self-consumption of generated energy. In this paper, we propose a peer-To-peer trading platform that integrates batteries into the distributed energy management trading system. We show that local optimization of single households not only benefits the individual households in terms of increased self-consumption and financial gains but also has an overall positive impact on the energy community compared to a simple battery implementation. © 2023 IEEE.

Energy management requires reliable tools to support decisions aimed at optimising consumption. Advances in data-driven models provide techniques like Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM), which estimates the energy demand of appliances from total consumption. Common single-target NILM approaches perform energy disaggregation by using separate learned models for each device. However, the use of single-target systems in real scenarios is computationally expensive and can obscure the interpretation of the resulting feedback. This study assesses a conditioned deep neural network built upon a Fully Convolutional Denoising AutoEncoder (FCNdAE) as multi-target NILM model. The network performs multiple disaggregations using a conditioning input that allows the specification of the target appliance. Experiments compare this approach with several single-target and multi-target models using public residential data from households and non-residential data from a hospital facility. Results show that the multi-target FCNdAE model enhances the disaggregation accuracy compared to previous models, particularly in non-residential data, and improves computational efficiency by reducing the number of trainable weights below 2 million and inference time below 0.25 s for several sequence lengths. Furthermore, the conditioning input helps the user to interpret the model and gain insight into its internal behaviour when predicting the energy demand of different appliances. © The Author(s) 2024.
