Mobile Ad hoc NETwork (MANET) is a type of wireless network consisting of a set of self-configured mobile hosts that can communicate with each other using wireless links without the assistance of any fixed infrastructure. This has made possible to create a distributed mobile computing application and has also brought several new challenges in distributed algorithm design. Checkpointing is a well explored fault tolerance technique for the wired and cellular mobile networks. However, it is not directly applicable to MANET due to its dynamic topology, limited availability of stable storage, partitioning and the absence of fixed infrastructure. In this paper, we propose an adaptive, coordinated and non-blocking checkpointing algorithm to provide fault tolerance in cluster based MANET, where only minimum number of mobile hosts in the cluster should take checkpoints. The performance analysis and simulation results show that the proposed scheme performs well compared to works related.

More than 50 billion devices are estimated to be connected to the Internet by 2020. Incompatibility of devices and protocols (usually proprietary devices and protocols) are one of the major hurdles to be overcome to realise the Internet of Things (IoT) vision. IoT devices are typically constrained devices and this creates dependencies between the hardware, software and protocols used in the device. Open hardware and software platforms to support emerging IoT trends are required. A wireless sensor network gateway was developed in a three-month period using off-the-shelf components. The gateway was based on the Raspberry PI single-board computer; it implemented 6LoWPAN mesh and wireless access point functionality for mobile and low power sensing and actuation devices. The gateway was tested in the following use-case: integrate a battery-operated 6LoWPAN-enabled smart water meter to an IPv6 building network. Several factors that influence the gateway's performance and reliability were identified and should be considered when deploying gateway devices for future endeavours.

In this paper we present and analyze HSkip+, a self-stabilizing overlay network for nodes with arbitrary heterogeneous bandwidths. HSkip+ has the same topology as the Skip+ graph proposed by Jacob et al. [1] but its self-stabilization mechanism significantly outperforms the self-stabilization mechanism proposed for Skip+. Also, the nodes are now ordered according to their bandwidths and not according to their identifiers. Various other solutions have already been proposed for overlay networks with heterogeneous bandwidths, but they are not self-stabilizing. In addition to HSkip+ being self-stabilizing, its performance is on par with the best previous bounds on the time and work for joining or leaving a network of peers of logarithmic diameter and degree and arbitrary bandwidths. Also, the dilation and congestion for routing messages is on par with the best previous bounds for such networks, so that HSkip+ combines the advantages of both worlds. Our theoretical investigations are backed by simulations demonstrating that HSkip+ is indeed performing much better than Skip+ and working correctly under high churn rates. © 2014 IEEE.

Since security is increasingly the principal concern in the conception and implementation of software systems, it is very important that the security mechanisms are designed so as to protect the computer systems against cyber attacks. An Intrusion Tolerance systems play a crucial role in maintaining the service continuity and enhancing the security compared with the traditional security. In this paper, we propose to combine a preventive maintenance with existing intrusion tolerance system to improve the system security. We use a semi-Markov process to model the system behavior. We quantitatively analyze the system security using the measures such as system availability, Mean Time To Security Failure and cost. The numerical analysis is presented to show the feasibility of the proposed approach.

Security assessment and mitigation have gained considerable attention over the recent years according to the information technology evolution and its broad adoption. Organizations are more aware of their data security, and they also have become more exigent in terms of extensibility and flexibility of their Information Technology infrastructures. Cloud computing is introduced as an evolution of information technology that offers major solutions and techniques to meet the evolving requirements of both tenants and clients. Therefore, extensibility and dynamic adjustment, which are among the most essential Cloud advantages, can make the security analysis a very hard task. There have been many approaches to analyze automatically the cyber security of traditional IT infrastructures without taking into account the new Cloud features, such as the nested virtualization. Until now, there is a few work to assess the security of Cloud computing. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to design and develop Model-based Automated Security Assessment Tool named MASAT.

Real-time Ethernet is expected to become the core technology of future in-car communication networks. Following its current adoption in subsystems for info- and entertainment, broadband Ethernet promises new features in the core of upcoming car series. Its full potential will enfold when deploying Ethernet-based backbones that consolidate all automotive domains on a single physical layer at increased bandwidth but reduced complexity and cost. In such a backbone, traffic with a variety of real-time requirements and best-effort characteristics will share the same physical infrastructure. However, certain applications like online diagnosis, data- or firmware updates, and access to off-board backends will introduce bursty high traffic loads to the sensitive core of the cars communication network. In this work, we analyze the robustness against cross-traffic of real-time Ethernet protocols. Based on a realistic in-car scenario, we demonstrate that background cross-traffic can have significant impact on in-car backbone networks-even for real-time protocols with strict prioritization. By comparing the real-time approaches Ethernet AVBs asynchronous credit based shaping with the time-triggered and rate-constrained traffic classes of Time-triggered Ethernet (AS6802) we quantify how different media access policies suffer from low priority bursts of applications such as diagnosis, online updates or backend-based services. Our simulation study of a realistic in-car backbone design and traffic model reveals that in a realistic in-car network design, cross-traffic may increase end-to-end latency by more than 500% while the jitter can become 14 times higher than for a network without background tasks. We discuss ways to mitigate these degrading effects.

This paper investigates the characteristics of a clinical dataset using a combination of feature selection and classification methods to handle missing values and understand the underlying statistical characteristics of a typical clinical dataset. Typically, when a large clinical dataset is presented, it consists of challenges such as missing values, high dimensionality, and unbalanced classes. These pose an inherent problem when implementing feature selection and classification algorithms. With most clinical datasets, an initial exploration of the dataset is carried out, and those attributes with more than a certain percentage of missing values are eliminated from the dataset. Later, with the help of missing value imputation, feature selection and classification algorithms, prognostic and diagnostic models are developed. This paper has two main conclusions: 1) Despite the nature of clinical datasets, and their large size, methods for missing value imputation do not affect the final performance. What is crucial is that the dataset is an accurate representation of the clinical problem and those methods of imputing missing values are not critical for developing classifiers and prognostic/diagnostic models. 2) Supervised learning has proven to be more suitable for mining clinical data than unsupervised methods. It is also shown that non-parametric classifiers such as decision trees give better results when compared to parametric classifiers such as radial basis function networks(RBFNs).

The current research represents a first step towards developing a decentralized network of small autonomous, intelligent and inexpensive unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), which could be used for a variety of scientific missions where measurements from a distributed network of nodes could signiflcantly improve the assessment. The paper presents an adaptive airborne sensing platform (e.g., UAV) that could be used to fuse the information acquired through multiple sensing modalities (obtained from sensors located close to or inside the phenomena) to monitor environmental processes over space and time. The sensing platform is able to continuously reconflgure its trajectory according to the circumstances (e.g., continuously evolving scientific phenomena) to optimize the location of individual sensing waypoints. As proof of concept and validation, we will apply the proposed sensing approach to monitoring volcanic plumes. The paper focuses on (i) developing a Bayesian statistical method to create sensor fusion algorithms that is used to model the plume and guide the UAV in an optimal way (ii) implementing a distributed task allocation scheme which is able guide all the UAVs efficiently and optimize the UAV paths for various criteria. © 2015, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc. Complex cloud services rely on different elasticity control processes to deal with dynamic requirement changes and workloads. However, enforcing an elasticity control process to a cloud service does not always lead to an optimal gain in terms of quality or cost, due to the complexity of service structures, deployment strategies, and underlying infrastructure dynamics. Therefore, being able, a priori, to estimate and evaluate the relation between cloud service elasticity behavior and elasticity control processes is crucial for runtime choices of appropriate elasticity control processes. In this paper we present ADVISE, a framework for estimating and evaluating cloud service elasticity behavior. ADVISE gathers service structure, deployment, service runtime, control processes, and cloud infrastructure information. Based on this information, ADVISE utilizes clustering techniques to identify cloud elasticity behavior produced by elasticity control. Our experiments show that ADVISE can estimate the expected elasticity behavior, in time, for different cloud services thus being a useful tool to elasticity controllers for improving the quality of runtime elasticity control decisions. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.
