Business models based on offering free services to people in exchange for their data are gaining importance and prevalence. The most prominent examples are social networks and, more recently, mobile social networks. However, this trend is endangering users' privacy. We do not discuss the ethical and legal issues derived from this business model. Notwithstanding, we believe that users might have better and more privacy-aware alternatives enabling them to trade their privacy on their own. Thus, we introduce the concept of "Privacy as a Product" (PaaP) and we propose and describe a framework and a protocol based on the Raykova-Vo-Bellovin-Malkin protocol that enables users to share private data without the need for trusting the infrastructure (e.g. a social network).We show that our proposal is feasible in terms of computational and storage overhead. Hence, our solution opens the door to the new concept of "Privacy as a Product" and could be the foundation for implementations of privacy-aware social networks in which privacy plays a more central role, like in the healthcare sector.

The current research represents a first step towards developing a flexible, decentralized network of small and inexpensive, battery powered unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), which could be used for a variety of scientific missions where measurements from a distributed network of nodes could significantly improve the assessment (e.g. chemical or dust clouds, mapping particulates, chemical content and physical boundaries of a dispersed volcanic plume or vog). Individual UAVs are equipped with on board sensing equipment as well as autopilot and networking nodes for communication between each UAV and the ground station and between UAVs to relaying the data between individual UAVs when lack of direct line of sight prevents communication. The UAVs are built using off the shelf components, which allows rapid replacement of damaged items and lowers significantly the overall price (less than $500 for each instrumented UAV), resulting in a practically disposable fleet of UAVs. In the current paper we use a pair of UAVs and a hardware in the loop computer simulation to test the feasibility of the proposed concept. Each UAV is instrumented with GPS, humidity, temperature and particle sensors as well as XBee network communication links.

The use of free mobile services and applications (commonly referred as apps) are becoming increasingly popular. Such services and apps are generally monetized by means of third party advertising. The app developers and ad networks which provide the advertisements to be displayed within apps use every means to maximize their revenue, most often at the expense of the end user. These means of maximizing revenue impact the user in three ways: 1) Through the loss of privacy and control over their data; 2) through the increase in monetary cost due to communications overheads introduced by ad traffic; and 3) by the increase of battery usage. The introduction of rich media advertisements will have even greater implications with respect to the aforementioned bandwidth and battery consumption concerns. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture, called MASTAds, that combines the concepts of opportunistic networks, network intermediaries and predictive regularity of human behavior which enable both cost and energy-efficient ads delivery. In addition, MASTAds allows ad networks to obtain only the necessary information to provide targeted advertisements and high Ads revenues, whilst still preserving the user privacy.

This publication presents a novel concept to provide and use services in a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) connected Machine-To-Machine (M2M) community. Service compositions are presented that address several application fields like Ambient Assisted Living, traffic, energy, electro mobility, logistic or surveillance. The successfully implemented concept for optimisation of energy management in the local grid with P2P connected households became more generalised. Now it can be part of M2M application fields of 2~(nd) and 3~(rd) generation. The concept provides an overall solution for information exchange, extended by community mechanism, for convenient networking of peers to use and provide optimised services. Inside the community, the peers can operate as a single peer or operate as a cluster of peers to provide and use the services.

research on semantics in Genetic Programming (GP) has increased over the last number of years. Results in this area clearly indicate that its use in GP considerably increases performance. Many of these semantic-based approaches rely on a trial-and-error method that attempts to find offspring that are semantically different from their parents over a number of trials using the crossover operator (crossover-semantics based - CSB). This, in consequence, has a major drawback: these methods could evaluate thousands of nodes, resulting in paying a high computational cost, while attempting to improve performance by promoting semantic diversity. In this work, we propose a simple and computationally inexpensive method, named semantics in selection, that eliminates the computational cost observed in CSB approaches. We tested this approach in 14 GP problems, including continuous- and discrete-valued fitness functions, and compared it against a traditional GP and a CSB approach. Our results are equivalent, and in some cases, superior than those found by the CSB approach, without the necessity of using a “brute force” mechanism.

We address the problem of formal and automated security verification of transport protocols for wireless sensor networks (WSN) that may perform cryptographic operations. The verification of this class of protocols is difficult because they typically consist of complex behavioral characteristics, such as real-time, probabilistic, and cryptographic operations. To solve this problem, we propose a probabilistic timed calculus for cryptographic protocols and demonstrate how to use this formal language for proving security or vulnerability of protocols. The main advantage of the proposed language is that it supports an expressive syntax and semantics, allowing for studying real-time, probabilistic, and cryptographic issues at the same time. Hence, it can be used to verify systems that involve these three properties in a convenient way. In addition, we propose an automatic verification method, based on the well-known PAT process analysis toolkit, for this class of protocols. For demonstration purposes, we apply the proposed manual and automatic proof methods for verifying the security of DTSN and SDTP, which are two of the recently proposed WSN transport protocols.

In this paper, the state estimation problem is investigated for a class of discrete-time stochastic systems in simultaneous presence of three network-induced phenomena, namely, fading measurements, randomly varying nonlinearities and probabilistic distributed delays. The channel fading is characterized by the ℓ th-order Rice fading model whose coefficients are mutually independent random variables with given probability density functions. Two sequences of random variables obeying the Bernoulli distribution are utilized to govern the randomly varying nonlinearities and probabilistic distributed delays. The purpose of the problem addressed is to design an state estimator such that the dynamics of the estimation errors is stochastically stable and the prespecified disturbance rejection attenuation level is guaranteed. Through intensive stochastic analysis, sufficient conditions are established under which the addressed state estimation problem is recast as a convex optimization one that can be solved via the semi-definite program method. Finally, a simulation example is provided to show the usefulness of the proposed state estimation scheme. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Following the tremendous technological evolution in telecommunications during the past few decades, which has culminated in the recent advances in mobile communications, especially the global introduction of 2G, 3G and 4G networks and their actual convergence with traditional fixed line communications and the Internet, in the mid-and long-term future technological progress in this field will be difficult to maintain at the current speed, while economic pressure due to market competition is expected to increase even further. We argue that, as an immediate consequence, this will lead to refocusing the scientific and commercial interest towards the end user. In this context, the current transition from Quality of Service (QoS) to Quality of Experience (QoE) will serve as a primary example. Therefore, in this position paper, we review basic motivation and framework as well as key steps and main outcomes of this somehow unparalleled paradigm change, which can be safely called an "Anti-Copernican Revolution", as it finally puts back the end user into the center of the technological universe. Deliberately abstaining from in-depth technical discussions, we end up formulating a set of seven succinct lessons learned from the past two decades of research on telecommunication service quality, and discuss their relevance also for other fields of systems engineering.

The automatic control of interacting autonomous vehicles (AVs) is one of the problems that engineers are currently trying to solve. The present paper deals with the design of local control laws governing the movement and collision avoidance of such groups of AVs, enforcing the safeness of the operations as well as task completions. This problem is inspired by the automation of a container terminal where each AV executes tasks assigned by a supervisor. A task involves moving an AV from an assigned origin to an assigned destination by a given deadline. The constraints imposed by the bounded workspace (a long and narrow quay in the container terminal example), the deadlines assigned to each task, and the uncertainty in the detection and communication make the problem difficult to solve in a centralized way. Therefore a distributed control approach is preferred with a local control agent in each AV adjusting its trajectory, so that its task is completed without collisions. By applying a fixed set of priority rules the computational complexity for each agent is reduced compared to the centralized case. Whenever an AV detects a possible conflict, i.e. the estimated position of another AV within the detection range, it must adjust its own speed and trajectory in order to avoid a future collision, reducing the number of cases where a supervisor has to intervene in order to resolve conflicts that degenerate in dead-locks. The modelling and validation of the system is performed by using the world automata theory. © 2012 IFAC.

In recent years, the emergence of ubiquitous and pervasive computing suggests the radical transformation of the Internet to incorporate physical objects. The transformation suggests the enabling of a new form of communication and interaction style that incorporates people, their smart devices and their physical objects through the utilization of distributed sensors spread in the environment. In this study, we propose extending Internet of Things (IoT) by modelling an IoT enabled smart environment as a whole, representing the dynamic communication and interaction among all objects (users, devices, physical objects and sensors). This is by recognizing and categorizing objects' properties in the form of a generic profile. We also reflect this in a disaster management context. That is by identifying which of the parameters of these smart objects are fixed, constant and persistent over time and which parameters are actually change over time, i.e. those characterized by their transient and dynamic nature. Thus, through the process of communication and interaction of the objects, we analyze parameters by demonstrating their static and/or dynamic properties as well as those supporting context-aware variables which are evident in disaster scenarios. To achieve these goals, we designed the persistent or temporal relationships to encompass internal information of smart-objects, along with their characteristics that actually depict their capacity to offer services to users by properties' matchmaking. The interlinked relationships represent a 'social network' providing a terrain of flexible scenarios that would lead to tailored parameters to fit user preferences. To enable communication among them in a dynamic dimension we utilized a distributed topology in which communication could occur indirectly between objects.
