The World Health Organisation has concluded that emotional wellbeing is fundamental to our quality of life. It enables us to experience life as meaningful and is an essential component of social cohesion, peace and stability in the living environment [21]. This workshop will bring together a diverse community to consolidate existing knowledge and identify new opportunities for research on technologies designed to support emotional wellbeing. The workshop will examine uses of technology in mental health settings, but will also consider the importance of emotional needs in physical healthcare and wellbeing more generally. The design of technology to provide social support and to extend traditional care networks will be key workshop themes. © 2012 Authors.

This paper describes a framework for an easy and timesaving generation of value-added services in Next Generation networks and introduces new possibilities for the service creation and service execution through an extension of the common telecommunication real-time execution environment JAIN SLEE. Through the introduction of extensions to the execution environment the service is automatically composed from predefined and pre-deployed *** extensions also introduce new possibilities for the composition,execution, management,and reconfiguration of value-added services.

Providing incentives for user contribution has been one of the primary design goals of Peer-to-Peer systems. The newly-emerged BitTorrent private communities adopt Sharing Ratio Enforcement (SRE) on top of BitTorrent's incentive mechanism, Tit-For-Tat, in order to strictly enforce a minimum contribution a member has to provide, in relation to the amount of service it has received. In this paper, we provide a theoretical model to analyze 1) how SRE provides seeding incentives, and 2) how SRE influences the download performance in the system. Specifically, we study the influence of the SRE threshold (i.e., the minimum sharing ratio requirement) and the bandwidth heterogeneity of the peers in the system. In our analysis, we assume users to be rational, i.e., peers seed only the minimum amount required by SRE, and we show that the download performance as predicted by our model represents a lower bound for the actual performance that can be reached in a BitTorrent private community. Hence, following our model, community administrators can predict the minimum performance level their systems will be able to reach. © 2011 IEEE.

Recent research has shown that it is possible to identify malicious URLs through lexical analysis of their URL structures alone. This paper intends to explore the effectiveness of these lightweight classification algorithms when working with large real world datasets including lists of malicious URLs obtained from Phishtank as well as largely filtered benign URLs obtained from proxy traffic logs. Lightweight algorithms are defined as methods by which URLs are analysed that do not use external sources of information such as WHOIS lookups, blacklist lookups and content analysis. These parameters include URL length, number of delimiters as well as the number of traversals through the directory structure and are used throughout much of the research in the paradigm of lightweight classification. Methods which include external sources of information are often called fully featured classifications and have been shown to be only slightly more effective than a purely lexical analysis when considering both false-positives and false-negatives. This distinction allows these algorithms to be run client side without the introduction of additional latency, but still providing a high level of accuracy through the use of modern techniques in training classifiers. Analysis of this type will also be useful in an incident response analysis where large numbers of URLs need to be filtered for potentially malicious URLs as an initial step in information gathering as well as end user implementations such as browser extensions which could help protect the user from following potentially malicious links. Both AROW and CW classifier update methods will be used as prototype implementations and their effectiveness will be compared to fully featured analysis results. Modern botnet trends have lead to the use of IP and domain fast-fluxing to avoid detection and increase resilience. These techniques bypass traditional detection systems such as blacklists and intrusion detection systems. The Domain Name Service (DNS) is one of the most prevalent protocols on modern networks and is essential for the correct operation of many network activities, including botnet activity. For this reason DNS forms the ideal candidate for monitoring, detecting and mitigating botnet activity. In this paper a system placed at the network edge is developed with the capability to detect fast-flux domains using DNS queries. Multiple domain features were examined to determine which would be most effective in the classification of domains. This is achieved using a C5.0 decision tree classifier and Bayesian statistics, with positive samples being labeled as potentially malicious and negative samples as legitimate domains. The system detects malicious domain names with a high degree of accuracy, minimising the need for blacklists. Statistical methods, namely Naive Bayesian, Bayesian, Total Variation distance and Probability distribution are applied to detect malicious domain names. The detection techniques are tested against sample traffic and it is shown that malicious traffic can be detected with low false positive rates. © 2011 IEEE.

One of the major constraints of wireless sensor networks is limited energy available to sensor nodes because of the small size of the batteries they use as source of power. Clustering is one of the routing techniques that have been using to minimize sensor nodes’ energy consumption during operation. In this paper, A Novel Clustering Algorithm for Energy Efficiency in Wireless Sensor networks (ANCAEE) has been proposed. The algorithm achieves good performance in terms of minimizing energy consumption during data transmission and energy consumptions are distributed uniformly among all nodes. ANCAEE uses a new method of clusters formation and election of cluster heads. The algorithm ensures that a node transmits its data to the cluster head with a single hop transmission and cluster heads forward their data to the base station with multi-hop transmissions. Simulation results show that our approach consumes less energy and effectively extends network utilization.

Body-coupled communication (BCC) is a technology that is based on the use of capacitively-coupled electric fields over the human body. In this paper we highlight the design and implementation of a medium access control (MAC) protocol specifically designed to meet the requirements of BCC-enabled body area networks (BANs). We propose a set of specific protocol enhancements over well-known MAC protocols that are based on the concept of low-power listening. We present the proposed protocol in conjunction with the embedded software implementation for the prototype hardware platform. The purpose of this approach is to demonstrate that several protocol enhancements were motivated by observations on the actual BCC hardware and its intricacies. Finally, we present a series of experiments under real conditions.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have attracted growing interest in the last decade as an infrastructure to support a diversity of ubiquitous computing and cyber-physical systems. However, most research work has focused on protocols or on specific applications. As a result, there remains a clear lack of effective, feasible and usable system architectures that address both functional and non-functional requirements in an integrated fashion. In this paper, we outline the EMMON system architecture for large-scale, dense, real-time embedded monitoring. EMMON provides a hierarchical communication architecture together with integrated middleware and command and control software. It has been designed to use standard commercially-available technologies, while maintaining as much flexibility as possible to meet specific applications requirements. The EMMON architecture has been validated through extensive simulation and experimental evaluation, including a 300+ node test-bed, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the largest single-site WSN test-bed in Europe to date. © 2011 IEEE.

To date, software development for wireless sensor network nodes is still characterized by low-level ad-hoc programming to a large extent. This short-paper argues for a methodologically more systematic approach on the basis of Model-Driven Engineering with CASE-Tool support, in combination with AI-based design choice optimizations during the MDE-steps of model-refinement and information-enrichment.
