GDCA: A distributed channel assignment mechanism for multi-radio multi-channel wireless mesh networks

Channel assignment is one of the most important problem in the research of the multi-radio multi-channel wireless mesh networks ((MRMC-WMN). Aiming at minimizing the overall network interference and optimizing the usage of channel resource, channel assignment problem must obey the constraint of limited radios and available channels for MRMC-WMN. The above optimization problem is known to be NP-complete. This paper focuses on the study of channel assignment in MRMC-WMN. We propose a new grid-loop-based echanism for dynamic channel assignment. Our mechanism exploits the group which we called grid-loop, which is constructed on distributed minimum spanning tree by self-organized. Our new GDCA scheme has many advantages over cluster-based scheme. The analysis and comparison demonstrates its feasibility, stability, cost-saving and efficiency. © 2011 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

Body-coupled communication (BCC) is a technology that is based on the use of capacitively-coupled electric fields over the human body. In this paper we highlight the design and implementation of a medium access control (MAC) protocol specifically designed to meet the requirements of BCC-enabled body area networks (BANs). We propose a set of specific protocol enhancements over well-known MAC protocols that are based on the concept of low-power listening. We present the proposed protocol in conjunction with the embedded software implementation for the prototype hardware platform. The purpose of this approach is to demonstrate that several protocol enhancements were motivated by observations on the actual BCC hardware and its intricacies. Finally, we present a series of experiments under real conditions.

This paper contains a summary of a significant amount of findings carried out collectively by a global research community specifically aimed at determining mutually beneficial and hot topics for international collaboration on the research and development of Trustworthy ICT. The paper highlights a sampling of these topics that were deemed to produce the most impact and it provides an introduction to the final recommendations of the INCO-Trust project, which was the main catalyst behind this initiative. The paper doesn't cover the extensive platforms, mechanisms, and systematic consensus building process in working groups based on workshops organised by the project to achieve its goals but instead focuses on the outcomes of the project. The key recommendations of the project will be used as a starting point for the recently start BIC project, whose objective is to include a number of new countries (Brazil, India and South Africa) into this already formed global community of ICT Trust and security researchers. © 2011 IEEE.

A business web is a collection of enterprises designed to jointly satisfy a consumer need. A model that shows the creation, distribution, and consumption of goods or services of economic value in a business web is called value model. The goal of a value model is to help the stakeholders build a shared understanding of the business case and assess the potential profitability of collaboration in the business web. The participating stakeholders in a business web are assumed to act trustfully in the collaboration and therefore trust is left entirely outside the picture. However the assumption that stakeholders act trustfully is often not useful in practice (since there are malicious actors). In this paper we consider business webs from a trust perspective and introduce an approach for measuring the trustworthiness of the stakeholders participating in a business web.

Controller Area Network (CAN) is widely used in automotive applications. Existing schedulability analysis for CAN is based on the assumption that the highest priority message ready for transmission at each node on the network will be entered into arbitration on the bus. However, in practice, some CAN device drivers implement FIFO rather than priority-based queues invalidating this assumption. In this paper, we introduce response time analysis and optimal priority assignment policies for CAN messages in networks where some nodes use FIFO queues while other nodes use priority queues. We show, via a case study and experimental evaluation, the detrimental impact that FIFO queues have on the real-time performance of CAN.

Although Internet on the train and train to wayside communication in general becomes more and more available for train operators, there are still a lot of challenges for future research. We previously developed a network platform that is responsible for an uninterrupted and seamless connectivity from the train to the wayside through heterogeneous wireless access technologies. This paper mainly focuses on the concept for providing sufficient Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees in a dynamic train environment. Within this network platform, IPv6 strategies are adopted for QoS, exploiting multi-homing and intelligent aggregation techniques. The implementation that has been done in the Click Modular Router programming environment will also be presented in details.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have attracted growing interest in the last decade as an infrastructure to support a diversity of ubiquitous computing and cyber-physical systems. However, most research work has focused on protocols or on specific applications. As a result, there remains a clear lack of effective, feasible and usable system architectures that address both functional and non-functional requirements in an integrated fashion. In this paper, we outline the EMMON system architecture for large-scale, dense, real-time embedded monitoring. EMMON provides a hierarchical communication architecture together with integrated middleware and command and control software. It has been designed to use standard commercially-available technologies, while maintaining as much flexibility as possible to meet specific applications requirements. The EMMON architecture has been validated through extensive simulation and experimental evaluation, including a 300+ node test-bed, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the largest single-site WSN test-bed in Europe to date.

A typical video surveillance system consists of at least one camera, controlled by an operator. To decrease the human error rate and to generally lessen the burden of operators, many object tracking systems have been implemented, most of which work in 2D image space. If used centralized, this is a very expensive task. Furthermore, if several views are to be fused, large inaccuracies arise due to ground plane assumptions, for instance. Lastly, in outdoor setups, quite often there is a need for slower channels like Wireless LAN which cannot cope with the full resolution data stream. We provide a smart camera system which performs the intensive tasks like background estimation or feature extraction. A central unit only has to process the received data in feature space, increasing scalability. Additionally, the object tracking problem is converted to an accurate 3D feature tracking, avoiding difficulties such as proper object segmentation and adding increased trajectory accuracy. The feature regions are computed within the smart camera. A wide-baseline feature matching approach has been employed to allow more freedom in the placement of the single smart cameras.

Link quality estimation has been an active area of research within the wireless sensor network community. It is now well known that the estimation of reliable links requires few sample packets - less than 10, while the estimation of unreliable links require many more - above 50. In scenarios where unreliable links are ubiquitous, and a rapid transfer of data is needed, traditional estimation techniques are not a viable option. In such scenarios, it is instead sufficient to identify the best link available at any given time. Within this context, we propose Link Quality Ranking (LQR), a mechanism that identifies the best link available when only unreliable links are present. Our testbed results indicate that with one sample packet, the delivery rate of LQR - with respect to the best link available - is above 93%. With 10 sample packets, the performance is above 96%.

Community Health Information Tracking System using Short Message Service (chitSMS) is an extension of CHITS which is a system that stores health records of patients in the barangay. Another project incorporated a mobile component in CHITS, enabling the health worker to visit the patient, do routine check-ups and medical services, and update CHITS when the health worker returns to the health center. Without a remote connection, however, the health worker has to return frequently to the usually distant health center to update the CHITS database with the data gathered from the field consult. chitSMS addresses this by using SMS as a mode of remote data transfer. It ensures the reliable transmission of the data by implementing a modified selective repeat protocol. Furthermore, it performs the Deflate algorithm for compression of the data being sent to minimize the cost. © 2010 IEEE.
