Random scale-free overlay topologies provide a number of properties like for example high resilience against failures of random nodes, small (average) diameter as well as good expansion and congestion characteristics that make them interesting for the use in large-scale distributed systems. A number of these properties have been shown to be influenced by the exponent of their power law degree distribution. In this article, we present a distributed rewiring scheme that is suitable to effectuate random scale-free overlay topologies with an adjustable degree distribution exponent. The scheme uses a biased random walk strategy to sample new endpoints of edges being rewired and relies on an equilibrium model for scale-free networks. The bias of the random walk strategy can be tuned to produce random scale-free networks with arbitrary degree distribution exponents greater than two. We argue that the rewiring strategy can be implemented in a distributed fashion based on a node's information about its immediate neighbors. We present both analytical arguments as well as results that have been obtained in simulations of the proposed protocol.

LEDBAT is a new congestion control algorithm which was proposed in an IETF draft in March 2009. LEDBAT's goal is to provide a less-than-best-effort data transport service, i.e. a LEDBAT flow should back-off in the presence of other competing flows (TCP flows in particular). Because of its intended friendliness to competing flows, LEDBAT has already been implemented in the popular Bittorrent client uTorrent. In this paper we present performance evaluation results for our Python implementation of LEDBAT. We ran tests both in emulated networks as well as in real world networks. One of the tests involved approximately 300 volunteers spread throughout the world.

The concept of service-oriented architectures allows the creation of interactive service-based applications by combining the functionality offered by different web services. However, the information provided by prevalent functional service descriptions (e.g. WSDL) are not sufficient to extensively support the creation of service-based applications. Especially, the development of user interfaces is still carried out manually, and concepts that aim to automate this process are still in their infancy. Therefore, we postulate the usage of UI-related service annotations to improve the quality, and decrease the effort of UI generation for web servics. In this paper, we present a large range of our service annotations that provide additional information about the visual appearance and the behavior of web services, of their operations and of operation parameters. Furthermore, we discuss effects of the annotations on generated web service UIs, and proof user's awareness of these effects within a conducted user study. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a taxonomy that characterizes and classifies different components of autonomic application management in Grids. We also survey several representative Grid systems developed by various projects world-wide to demonstrate the comprehensiveness of the taxonomy. The taxonomy not only highlights the similarities and differences of state-of-the-art technologies utilized in autonomic application management from the perspective of Grid computing, but also identifies the areas that require further research initiatives.

Sorting is a well-investigated topic in computer science in general and by now many efficient sorting algorithms for CPUs and GPUs have been developed. There is no swapping, paging, etc. available on GPUs to provide more virtual memory than physically available, thus if one wants to sort sequences that exceed GPU memory using the GPU the problem of external sorting arises. In this contribution we present a novel merge-based external sorting algorithm for one or more CUDA-enabled GPUs. We reduce the performance impact of memory transfers to and from the GPU by using an approach similar to regular samplesort and by overlapping memory transfers with GPU computation. We achieve a good utilization of GPUs and load balancing among them by carefully choosing the samples and the amount of GPU memory used for computation. We demonstrate the performance of our algorithm by extended testing. Using two GTX280 the implementation outperforms the fastest CPU sorting algorithms known to the authors.

Wireless Sensor networks (WSNs) have attracted significant research interest in recent years because of their suitability to a wide range of real world applications. The envisioned Internet Protocol (IP) support for WSNs requires interoperability with existing management solutions, like Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), in order to provide remote management functionality and assure the correct operation of the WSN. It is essential to provide a network management system that is interoperable with standard network management solutions, customizable, and extensible to various WSN applications. In this paper we present work in progress on our EmNetS Network Management Protocol (EMP), a lightweight and SNMP-compliant IP-based WSN (IP-WSN) management solution. We present detailed operational architecture and a Management Information Base (MIB) which is extensible to IP-WSN applications. We also present implementation details and preliminary results from our laboratory testbed. ©2010 IEEE.

A dream of humanoid robot researchers is to develop a complete "human-like" (whatever that means) artificial agent both in terms of body and brain. We now have seen an increasing number of humanoid robots (such as Honda's ASIMO, Aldebaran's Nao and many others). These, however, display only a limited number of cognitive skills in terms of perception, learning and decision-making. On the other hand, brain research has begun to produce computational models such as LIDA. In this paper, we propose an intermediate approach for body-brain integration in a form of a scenario-based distributed system. Busy hospital Emergency departments (ED) are concerned with shortening the waiting times of patients, with relieving overburdened triage team physicians, nurses and medics, and with reducing the number of mistakes. Here we propose a system of cognitive robots and a supervisor, dubbed the TriageBot System that would gather both logistical and medical information, as well as take diagnostic measurements, from an incoming patient for later use by the triage team. TriageBot would also give tentative, possible diagnoses to the triage nurse, along with recommendations for non-physician care Some of the robots in the TriageBot System would be humanoid in form, but it is not necessary that all of them take this form. Advances in humanoid robotic design, in sensor technology, and in cognitive control architectures make such a system feasible, at least in principle. ©2010 IEEE.

We present and investigate the multi class extension of the recently proposed analytical model for performance evaluation of a bandwidth allocation and admission control scheme in mobile integrated services networks - called MATS. The proposed model allows for a prioritization of different service classes and for considering different levels of QoS requirements. The MATS scheme is based on bandwidth units and it implements an upgrade / degrade (ud) mechanism. This mechanism maintains the negotiated QoS levels of connections as good as possible and prevents connections from getting lost (blocked, dropped) at the same time. Instead of focusing only on the traditional metrics, we propose two new metrics to evaluate the relative frequency of the u-d mechanism and to measure the provided QoS level. A comparison with other recently published schemes concludes that our proposed scheme is mandatory if it is essential to respect the priority among classes and shows good performance from both user and service provider perspectives. Simulation results counter check the results of the Markov model and show its applicability for non- Markovian service time distributions. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2010.

Malicious botnets threaten the Internet by DDoS-attacks, spam, information theft and other criminal activities. They are using increasingly sophisticated techniques to hide the Command and Control traffic. Many existing detection techniques can be defeated by encryption, tunneling in popular protocols, delays, and flow perturbation. We introduce a new DNS-based detection approach, that detects botnet collusion by anomalies in the degree distribution of visited domains, without any assumption about message content and statistical properties of the traffic. The proposed technique is difficult to evade, without major changes in the bot Command and Control Infrastructure or reduced utility. We evaluate evasion possibilities, derive a theoretical model of the detector performance and test the detector with a combination of captured Internet traffic and simulated botnet-traffic.

Scheduling of large-scale, distributed topology-aware applications requires that not only the properties of the requested machines be considered, but also the properties of the machines' interconnections. This requirement severely complicates the scheduling process, as even a matching between a single multi-processors task and available machines in a single time slot becomes an NP-complete problem with no polynomial approximation. In this paper we propose a complete scheduling framework for multi-cluster, heterogeneous environments that provides, in practice, an efficient solution for the scheduling of topology-aware applications. The proposed framework is very flexible as it is composed of pluggable components and can be easily configured to support a variety of scheduling policies. We also describe three novel scheduling and coallocation algorithms that were developed and plugged into the framework. The proposed scheduling framework was integrated into the QosCosGrid1 system, where it is used as the main decision-making module. © 2010 IEEE.
