There has been a growing interest in using the soft computing techniques for distributed data processing in monitoring systems during last years; wireless sensor network is an example which can be utilized to record and process the environmental conditions in transportation systems. In this paper, by using knowledge based soft computing techniques, the reliability of the sensory records is evaluated autonomously in an intelligent transportation system; for this purpose, a new combinational architecture is applied including a bio-inspired local/global data approximation as well as a knowledge based data classification mechanism. The approximation mechanism is established on a least squares mechanism for global data prediction and a radial basis function network including immunological center selection to perform the local data approximations. To classify the records, a new probabilistic neural network including immune system features is developed. The proposed data processing technique is applicable for various intelligent data processing purposes.

This paper puts forward an optimization in routing processing for wireless sensor networks. The sensor node in such network is a battery-operated sensing device. These nodes are placed in space with a consideration to a base station that centralizes and consolidates the data transmitted or forwarded by sensor nodes. When optimizing the management of a Wireless Sensor Network, we have to take care of the consumption of energy that takes place while sensor nodes are running the routing process to send or relay a message to neighbors or to a Base Station. In this paper, we put forward a study of sensors' behavior by modeling and implementing a controller with Coloured Petri Network in order to ensure the reduction of energy consumption in some sensor networks in which each node can be activated or suspended as need be. The controller must deal with activation and suspension to apply a reconfiguring policy to nodes depending on an energy supply level in every sensor in order to obtain the lowest level possible of energy consumption and maintain the same service quality consisting in total coverage of the region to survey and the connection of active nodes to the functional network. The evaluation of our presented model is made by CPN-Tools. © 2010 IEEE.

Increasingly, methods to identify community structure in networks have been proposed which allow groups to overlap. These methods have taken a variety of forms, resulting in a lack of consensus as to what characteristics overlapping communities should have. Furthermore, overlapping community detection algorithms have been justified using intuitive arguments, rather than quantitative observations. This lack of consensus and empirical justification has limited the adoption of methods which identify overlapping communities. In this text, we distil from previous literature a minimal set of axioms which overlapping communities should satisfy. Additionally, we modify a previously published algorithm, Iterative Scan, to ensure that these properties are met. By analyzing the community structure of a large blog network, we present both structural and attribute based verification that overlapping communities naturally and frequently occur. © 2010 IEEE.

Scheduling of large-scale, distributed topology-aware applications requires that not only the properties of the requested machines be considered, but also the properties of the machines' interconnections. This requirement severely complicates the scheduling process, as even a matching between a single multi-processors task and available machines in a single time slot becomes an NP-complete problem with no polynomial approximation. In this paper we propose a complete scheduling framework for multi-cluster, heterogeneous environments that provides, in practice, an efficient solution for the scheduling of topology-aware applications. The proposed framework is very flexible as it is composed of pluggable components and can be easily configured to support a variety of scheduling policies. W e also describe three novel scheduling and coallocation algorithms that were developed and plugged into the framework. The proposed scheduling framework was integrated into the QosCosGrid system, where it is used as the main decision-making module.

The automatic allocation of enterprise workload to resources can be enhanced by being able to make 'whatif' response time predictions, whilst different allocations are being considered. It is important to quantitatively compare the effectiveness of different prediction techniques for use in cloud infrastructures. To help make the comparison of relevance to a wide range of possible cloud environments it is useful to consider the following. 1.) urgent cloud customers such as the emergency services that can demand cloud resources at short notice (e.g. for our FireGrid emergency response software). 2.) dynamic enterprise systems, that must rapidly adapt to frequent changes in workload, system configuration and/or available cloud servers. 3.) The use of the predictions in a coordinated manner by both the cloud infrastructure and cloud customer management systems. 4.) A broad range of criteria for evaluating each technique. However, there have been no previous comparisons meeting these requirements. This paper, meeting the above requirements, quantitatively compares the layered queuing and ("HYDRA") historical techniques - including our initial thoughts on how they could be combined. Supporting results and experiments include the following: i.) defining, investigating and hence providing guidelines on the use of a historical and layered queuing model;ii.) using these guidelines showing that both techniques can make low overhead and typically over 70% accurate predictions, for new server architectures for which only a small number of benchmarks have been run;and iii.) defining and investigating tuning a prediction-based cloud workload and resource management algorithm. © 2010 IEEE.

A dream of humanoid robot researchers is to develop a complete “human-like” (whatever that means) artificial agent both in terms of body and brain. We now have seen an increasing number of humanoid robots (such as Honda's ASIMO, Aldebaran's Nao and many others). These, however, display only a limited number of cognitive skills in terms of perception, learning and decision-making. On the other hand, brain research has begun to produce computational models such as LIDA. In this paper, we propose an intermediate approach for body-brain integration in a form of a scenario-based distributed system. Busy hospital Emergency departments (ED) are concerned with shortening the waiting times of patients, with relieving overburdened triage team physicians, nurses and medics, and with reducing the number of mistakes. Here we propose a system of cognitive robots and a supervisor, dubbed the TriageBot System that would gather both logistical and medical information, as well as take diagnostic measurements, from an incoming patient for later use by the triage team. TriageBot would also give tentative, possible diagnoses to the triage nurse, along with recommendations for non-physician care Some of the robots in the TriageBot System would be humanoid in form, but it is not necessary that all of them take this form. Advances in humanoid robotic design, in sensor technology, and in cognitive control architectures make such a system feasible, at least in principle.

Malicious software has become a major threat to computer users on the Internet today. To combat it, security researchers need to gather and analyze many samples to develop proper defense mechanisms. The setting of honeypots, which emulate vulnerable applications, is one method of gathering attack code. In contrast to the conventional software-based honeypots, we have proposed a dedicated hardware architecture for honeypots to both allow high-speed operation at rates of 10+ Gb/s as well as a higher resilience against attacks on the honey pot infrastructure itself. We now improve the flexibility of our prior solution by using partial dynamic reconfiguration to update the functionality of the honey pot during operation.
