A number of analytical models exists that capture various properties of the BitTorrent protocol. However, until now virtually all of these models have been based on the assumption that the peers in the system have homogeneous bandwidths. As this is highly unrealistic in real swarms, these models have very limited applicability. Most of all, these models implicitly ignore BitTorrent's most important property: peer selection based on the highest rate of reciprocity. As a result, these models are not suitable for understanding or predicting the properties of real BitTorrent networks. Furthermore, they are hardly of use in the design of realistic BitTorrent simulators and new P2P protocols. In this paper, we extend existing work by presenting a model of a swarm in BitTorrent where peers have arbitrary upload and download bandwidths. In our model we group peers with (roughly) the same bandwidth in classes, and then analyze the allocation of upload slots from peers in one class to peers in another class. We show that our model accurately predicts the bandwidth clustering phenomenon observed experimentally in other work, and we analyze the resulting data distribution in swarms. We validate our model with experiments using real BitTorrent clients. Our model captures the effects of BitTorrent's well-known `tit-for-tat' mechanism in bandwidth-inhomogeneous swarms and provides an accurate mathematical description of the resulting dynamics.

A well-known problem in P2P systems is freeriding, where users do not share content if there is no incentive to do so. In this paper, we distinguish lazy freeriders that are merely reluctant to share but follow the protocol, versus die-hard freeriders that employ sophisticated methods to subvert the protocol. Existing incentive designs often provide theoretically attractive resistance against die-hard freeriding, yet are rarely deployed in real networks because of practical infeasibility. Meanwhile, real communities benefit greatly from prevention of lazy freeriding, but have only centralized technology available to do so. We present a lightweight, fully distributed mechanism called BARTERCAST that prevents lazy freeriding and is deployed in practice. BarterCast uses a maxflow reputation algorithm based on a peer's private history of its data exchanges as well as indirect information received from other peers. We assess different reputation policies under realistic, trace-based community conditions and show that our mechanism is consistent and effective, even when significant fractions of peers spread false information. Furthermore, we present results of the deployment of BarterCast in the BitTorrent-based Tribler network which currently has thousands of users worldwide.

Integrated process support is highly desirable in environments where data related to a particular (business) process are scattered over distributed, heterogeneous information systems (IS). A process monitoring component is a much-needed module in order to provide an integrated view on all these process data. Regarding process data integration, access control (AC) issues are very important but also quite complex to be addressed. A major problem arises from the fact that the involved IS are usually based on heterogeneous AC components. For several reasons, the only feasible way to tackle the problem of AC at the process monitoring level is to define access rights for the process monitoring component, hence getting rid of the burden to map access rights from the IS level. This paper discusses requirements for AC in process monitoring, which we derived from our case studies in the automotive domain. It then presents alternative approaches for AC: the view-based and the object-based approach. The latter is retained, and a core AC model is proposed for the definition of access rights that meet the derived requirements. AC mechanisms provided within the core model are key ingredients for the definition of model extensions.

Wormhole switching with fixed priority preemption has been proposed as a possible solution for real-time on-chip communication. However, the hardware implementation cost is expensive and hence constrains its practical deployment. To address this problem, we propose a new solution by utilizing a priority share policy to reduce the resource overhead while still achieving the hard real-time service guarantees. The composite model-based schedulability analysis technique and relevant priority allocation scheme are represented in this paper. Experiment results show that significant resource saving can be achieved with no performance degradation in terms of missed deadlines. By using this approach, a broad class of real-time communication with different QoS requirements can be explored and developed in a SoC/NoC communication platform.

Efficient scheduling is a key concern for the effectual execution of performance driven Grid applications, such as workflows. Many list heuristics have been developed for scheduling workflows in centralized Grid environment. However, in this paper, we present a distributed list heuristic for decentralized scheduling of workflow applications in global Grids. The simulation results show that the proposed scheduling approach is scalable with respect to increased workload on the system.

In this paper, a reputation-based Grid workflow scheduling algorithm is proposed to counter the effect of inherent unreliability and temporal characteristics of computing resources in large scale, decentralized Grid overlays. The proposed approach builds upon structured peer-to-peer indexing and overlay networking techniques to create a scalable wide-area networking of Grid sites for supporting dependable scheduling of applications. The scheduling algorithm considers reliability of a Grid resource as a statistical property, which is globally computed in the decentralized Grid overlay based on dynamic feedbacks or reputation scores assigned by individual service consumers (Grid Resource Brokers). The proposed algorithm can dynamically adapt to changing resource conditions and offer significant performance gains as compared to traditional approaches in the event of unsuccessful job execution or resource failure. We evaluate and demonstrate the feasibility of our approach through an extensive trace driven simulation. The results show that our scheduling technique can reduce the makespan up to 50% and successfully isolate the failure-prone resources from the system.

As multi-core personal computers (PC) have become popular and widely available for various computation tasks, developing parallel computing methods are imperative for taking the full capacity of the multi-core machines. This paper reports on the analysis and comparison of different paradigms for portable parallel computation on single multi-core PC and a cluster of PCs. It summarizes the strength and weakness of various parallel and distributed computation models. A scalable and portable parallel optimization framework has been developed and applied to water distribution pump scheduling to improve energy efficiency. It is implemented as a generic optimization method for hydraulic engineers to optimize the pump operation policy in order to maximize energy cost efficiency. An example study is presented to demonstrate the application of the parallel and distributed optimization model. The results show a linear speedup has been achieved for the parallel optimization of pump scheduling. © 2009 ASCE.

This work presents a study undertaken to characterise the FINISTERRAE supercomputer, one of the biggest NUMA systems in Europe. The main objective was to determine the performance effect of bus contention and cache coherency as well as the suitability of porting strategies regarding irregular codes in such a complex architecture. Results show that: (1) cores which share a socket can be considered as independent processors in this context; (2) for big data sizes, the effect of sharing a bus degrades the final performance but masks the cache coherency effects; (3) the NUMA factor (remote to local memory latency ratio) is an important factor on irregular codes and (4) the default kernel allocation policy is not optimal in this system. These results allow us to understand the behaviour of thread-to-core mappings and memory allocation policies.

This paper proposes a Resilient Overlay for Mission Critical Applications (ROMCA); a novel operator-independent overlay architecture providing a resilient and reliable service across wide-area networks. One feature of ROMCA is that its overlay topology can be altered according to the underlying network conditions. Moreover, resilience is achieved by combining centralized topology construction control and distributed dynamic mapping of paths onto the overlay topology according to network conditions. ROMCA can mitigate the shortcomings of the Internet network infrastructure and provide low recovery times in the event of network failure(s).

This paper describes a biologically motivated approach, using hierarchical temporal memory (HTM), to build a high-level self-organizing visual system for a soccer bot. Meanwhile it presents two unsupervised online learning algorithms for temporal patterns in HTMs. The algorithms were implemented in a simulated soccer bot for a real-world evaluation. After a training phase, the robot was able to recognize different static objects in the soccer field. It also learned and recognized high-level objects that are composed of simpler objects, with position invariance and was also able to learn and recognize motions in the objects, all in a completely unsupervised manner.
