In this paper we introduce a mean field model to analyze an optical switch equipped with both wavelength converters (WCs) and fiber delay lines (FDLs) to resolve contention in OBS networks. Under some very general conditions, that is, a general burst size distribution and any Markovian burst arrival process at each wavelength, this model determines the minimum number of WCs required to achieve a zero loss rate as the number of wavelengths becomes large. The mean field result is exact as the number of wavelengths goes to infinity and turns out to be very accurate for systems with (a few) hundred wavelengths, commonly occurring when using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). Moreover, we show that if the number of WCs is underdimensioned, (i) periodic system behavior may occur (with the period being the greatest common divisor of the burst lengths) and (ii) increasing the number of WCs may even worsen the loss rate under the often studied minimum horizon allocation policy (as opposed to the minimum gap policy). Finally, we further demonstrate that in terms of the loss rate, including (more) FDLs may have little or no effect on the number of WCs required to achieve a near-zero loss, especially for higher loads.

Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) is a mechanism whereby data is moved directly between the application memory of the local and remote computer. In bypassing the operating system, RDMA significantly reduces the CPU cost of large data transfers and eliminates intermediate copying across buffers, thereby making it very attractive for implementing distributed applications. With the advent of hardware implementations of RDMA over Ethernet (iWARP), its advantages have become even more obvious. In this paper we analyze the applicability of RDMA and identify hidden costs in the setup of its interactions that, if not handled carefully, remove any performance advantage, especially in hardware implementations. From an application point of view, the major difference to TCP/IP based communication is that the buffer management has to be done explicitly by the application. Without the proper optimizations, RDMA loses all its advantages. We discuss the problem in detail, analyze what applications can profit from RDMA, present a number of optimization strategies, and show through extensive performance experiments that these optimizations make a substantial difference in the overall performance of RDMA based applications.

The systematic conception of decentralized and self-adaptive software systems, as demanded for the run-time management of today’s distributed, multi-tier software architectures, is an active research area. Here, we discuss a coordination architecture that facilitates the enactment of externalized coordination models in Multi-agent systems (MAS). Coordination is configured by systemic models, i.e. structures of agent-behaviour interdependencies that denote the mutual influences of agent activities. The systematic, iterative application development is supported by a non-intrusive integration approach that enables developers to adjust application dynamics by complementing agent-based applications with systemic coordination models.

Structure learning is a crucial component of a multivariate Estimation of Distribution algorithm. It is the part which determines the interactions between variables in the probabilistic model, based on analysis of the fitness function or a population. In this paper we take three different approaches to structure learning in an EDA based on Markov networks and use measures from the information retrieval community (precision, recall and the F-measure) to assess the quality of the structures learned. We then observe the impact that structure has on the fitness modelling and optimisation capabilities of the resulting model, concluding that these results should be relevant to research in both structure learning and fitness modelling.

Emergency vehicles, while usually equipped with warning devices, are still often impeded by other traffic and involved in numerous collisions. Current research is investigating the use of wireless communication from emergency vehicles to warn other traffic. However, communication in dynamic wireless networks is not reliable. In this paper, we propose a novel emergency vehicle early-warning system that relies on wireless technology to inform other vehicles of the arrival of emergency vehicles, and returns feedback in real-time when communication degrades. We describe how such a system is built with Comhordu, a coordination model for wireless networks. © 2008, Inderscience Publishers.

A regenerative optical grooming switch for interconnecting 130 Gbit/s and 40 Gbit/s networks with switching functionality in time, space and wavelength domain is demonstrated. Lab and field demonstrations show the feasibility of the new concept developed by the TRIUMPH project consortia. Q-factors above 20 dB are reported. ©2009 IEEE.

There have been some efforts to apply agent based approaches in Wireless Sensor networks (WSNs) for different applica- tion scenarios in recent past. These efforts have met with varying levels of success so far. However, the efforts to assess the suitability of Foundation for Intelligent Physical Agents (FIPA) compliant multiagent solutions for WSNs are almost non-existent. In this paper we present a scenario from an industrial domain and asses the suitability of a FIPA compli- ant multiagent based solution for it. The scenario is based on a WSN deployment in an underground mine where it could be put to use for several purposes like hazardous gas plume detection and tracking, mine lighting control, Proximate En- vironment Monitoring (PEM), structural health monitoring of mine structure, to name a few. However, we only consider the PEM usage scenario in this paper. Copyright ACM 2007.

This article provides a comprehensive overview of state-of-the art research on molecular communication-a molecule-based communication paradigm for biological machines. Unlike current telecommunications based on electric or optical signals, molecular communication exploits biological molecules as information carriers. In molecular communication, senders of communication encode information onto molecules and transmit to the environment. The information coded molecules then propagate in the environment to reach receivers of communication, which capture and biochemically react to the molecules (i.e., decode the information from the information carrying molecules). Since biological molecules are compatible with biological systems, molecular communication is expected to impact medical domains such as human health monitoring where implant biological machines interact with biological cells through molecular communication. This article describes key concepts, architecture, potential applications of molecular communication as well as existing research on engineering molecular communication components and systems.

In this paper, we discuss a real-time on-chip communication service with a priority-based wormhole switching policy. A novel off-line schedulability analysis approach is presented. By evaluating diverse inter-relationships among the traffic-flows, this approach can predict the packet network latency based on two quantifiable different delays: direct interference from higher priority traffic-flows and indirect interference from other higher priority traffic-flows. Due to the inevitable existence of parallel interference, we prove that the general problem of determining the exact schedulability of real-time traffic-flow over the on-chip network is NP-hard. However the results presented do form an upper bound. In addition, an error in a previous published scheduling approach is illustrated and remedied. Utilizing this analysis scheme, we can flexibly evaluate at design time the schedulability of a set of traffic-flows with different QoS requirements on a real-time SoC/NoC communication platform. © 2008 IEEE.
