Container-managed persistence is an essential technology as it dramatically simplifies the implementation of enterprise data access. However it can also impose a significant overhead on the performance of the application at runtime. This paper presents a layered queuing performance model for predicting the effect of adding or removing container-managed persistence to a distributed enterprise application, in terms of response time and throughput performance metrics. Predictions can then be made for new server architectures - that is, server architectures for which only a small number of measurements have been made (e.g. to determine request processing speed). An experimental analysis of the model is conducted on a popular enterprise computing architecture based on IBM Websphere, using Enterprise Java Bean-based container-managed persistence as the middleware functionality. The results provide strong experimental evidence for the effectiveness of the model in terms of the accuracy of predictions, the speed with which predictions can be made and the low overhead at which the model can be rapidly parameterised.

Context awareness is a vital element in pervasive and ubiquitous systems. While most existing research has focused on designing context-aware systems to integrate into the environment, less attention has been placed on the interoperability among the entities comprising such systems. In this paper, we consider how the components of a context-aware system can collaborate to achieve a common goal. We provide a taxonomy of such Collaborative Context Awareness (CCA) based on three axis, i.e., goal, approaches and means. We also discuss a number of context-aware systems from different domains, i.e., augmented artefacts, robotics and sensor(/actuator) networks that exhibit some form of collaboration. Finally, we classify the different studied systems according to our taxonomy.

The UNICORE grid system provides a seamless, secure and intuitive access to distributed grid resources. In recent years, UNICORE 5 is used as a well-tested grid middleware system in production grids (e.g. DEISA, D-Grid) and at many supercomputer centers world-wide. Beyond this production usage, UNICORE serves as a solid basis in many European and International research projects and business scenarios from T-systems, Philips research, Intel, Fujitsu and others. To foster ongoing developments in multiple projects, UNICORE is open source under BSD license at SourceForge. More recently, the new Web services-based UNICORE 6 has become available that is based on open standards such as the Web services addressing (WS-A) and the Web services resource framework (WS-RF) and thus conforms to the open grid services architecture (OGSA) of the open grid forum (OGF). In this paper we present the evolution from production UNICORE 5 to the open standards-based UNICORE 6 and its various Web services-based interfaces. It describes the interface integration of emerging open standards such as OGSA-BES and OGSA-RUS and thus provides an overview of UNICORE 6.

XML is a markup language with a clear hierarchical structure. Validating an XML document against a schema document is an important part in the work flow incorporating XML documents. Most approaches use grammar based schema languages. Grammar based schemas are well suited for the syntax definition of an XML document, but come to their limits when semantic properties are to be defined. This paper presents a rule based, first order schema language, complementary to grammar based schema languages, demonstrating its strength in defining semantic properties for an XML document.
