Connectors are used to realize component interactions in component systems. Apart from their primary function, which is mediating the communication, their implementation can also support additional features that, while unrelated to the primary function, may benefit from their placement in connectors. Such features are often optional in the sense that they can be activated and deactivated at run-time. The problem is that even if they are disabled, their very presence in the connector incurs certain overhead. In this paper, we describe an approach to eliminate this overhead by reconfiguration of the connector implementation. Besides connectors, the approach is applicable to similar technologies such as reflective middleware and other architecture-based component systems and frameworks. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

In this paper, we present Bandwidth Class Based Streaming (BCBS), an application layer multicast for multimedia services. BCBS focuses on multi source live streaming, and following a locality model based on round trip times, it creates network efficient streaming meshes. The load balancing selects multiple nodes as streaming sources and is organised subscription based instead of request based. We describe a simulation study of the load balancing and tree construction procedures. The results show that BCBS creates network efficient overlays with respect to stretch and link stress. © 2006 IEEE.

Healthcare digital libraries (DLs) increasingly make use of dedicated services to access functionality and/or data. Semantic (web) services enhance single services and facilitate compound services, thereby supporting advanced applications on top of a DL. The traditional process management approach tends to focus on process definition at build time rather than on actual service events in run time, and to anticipate failures in order to define appropriate strategies. This paper presents a novel approach where service coordination is distributed among a set of agents. A dedicated component plans compound semantic services on demand for a particular application. In failure, the planner is reinvoked to define contingency strategies. Finally, matchmaking is effected at runtime by choosing the appropriate service provider. These combined technologies will provide key support for highly flexible next-generation DL applications. Such technologies are under development within CASCOM. Copyright © 2006 SAGE Publications.

Agent oriented architectures and service oriented architectures (SOA) have many features in common such as loose coupling and provision and consumption of services. Software agent systems have been used in many commercial applications due to their attractive attributes such as autonomy, flexibility and a rich and complex set of interaction protocols. Agents in such systems provide and consume services on behalf of their owners. These systems are prone to various kinds of runtime exceptions due to the dynamic nature of open environments and the different programming models involved in the provision of a particular service. Diagnosis of underlying causes of these exceptions is critical for the successful and reliable operation of agent oriented services. This paper presents and discusses a sentinel agent based approach for diagnosing the underlying causes of runtime exception for agent-oriented services.

A novel optimisation technique inspired by natural ecosystems is presented, where the optimisation works at two levels: a first optimisation, migration of services which are distributed in a decentralised peer-to-peer network, operating continuously in time; this process feeds a second optimisation based on evolutionary computing that operates locally on single peers and is aimed at finding solutions to satisfy locally relevant constraints. Through this two-fold process, the local search is accelerated and will yield better local optima, because the distributed optimisation already provides a good sampling of the search space by making use of computations already performed in other peers with similar constraints. We call this new distributed optimisation architecture a digital ecosystem, an ecosystem-orientated architecture (EOA) created by extending a service-oriented architecture (SOA) with distributed evolutionary computing (DEC). The digital ecosystem will allow services to recombine and evolve over time, constantly seeking to improve their effectiveness for the user base. individuals within our digital ecosystem will be applications (groups of services), created in response to user requests by using evolutionary optimisation to aggregate the services. These individuals will migrate through the digital ecosystem and adapt to find niches where they are useful in fulfilling other user requests

The paper recasts the problem of feature location in source code as a decision-making problem in the presence of uncertainty. The main contribution consists in the combination of two existing techniques for feature location in source code. Both techniques provide a set of ranked facts from the software, as result to the feature identification problem. One of the techniques is based on a scenario based probabilistic ranking of events observed while executing a program under given scenarios. The other technique is defined as an information retrieval task, based on the latent semantic indexing of the source code. We show the viability and effectiveness of the combined technique with two case studies. A first case study is a replication of feature identification in Mozilla, which allows us to directly compare the results with previously published data. The other case study is a bug location problem in Mozilla. The results show that the combined technique improves feature identification significantly with respect to each technique used independently

In many practical situations, we need to combine probabilistic and interval uncertainty. For example, we need to 1 A compute statistics like population mean E = 1/n. n Sigma i=1 x i or population variance V = 1/n n Sigma i=1 (x i -E) 2 in situations when we only know intervals x i of possible value of x i . In this case, it is desirable to compute the range of the corresponding characteristic. Some range computation problems are NP-hard; for these problems, in general, only an enclosure is possible. For other problems, there are efficient algorithms. In many practical situations, we have additional information that can be used as constraints on possible cumulative distribution functions (cdfs). For example, we may know that the actual (unknown) cdf is Gaussian. In this paper, we show that such constraints enable us to drastically narrow down the resulting ranges - and sometimes, transform the originally intractable (NP-hard) computational problem of computing the exact range into an efficiently solvable one. This possibility is illustrated on the simplest example of an NP-problem from interval statistics: the problem of computing the range V of the variance V. We also describe how we can estimate the amount of information under such combined intervals-and-constraints uncertainty.
