With the current trend toward ubiquitous computing comes wireless devices capable of direct, peer-to-peer communication. Such devices will be capable of forming the nodes of ad hoc networks. In the near future, it is expected that ad hoc networks will be saturated with heterogeneous hardware and software requiring mechanisms to facilitate interoperability. At the application layer, such interoperability may be facilitated using software agents. Unfortunately, it is currently impractical to design, implement, and study device-based software agents within ad hoc networks as the required hardware and software configurations do not yet exist. In this paper, we present a software framework for developing and studying device-based software agents in the context of ad hoc networks. We refer to this framework as the Wireless Agent Simulator. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

Path prediction is currently being considered for use in the context of mobile and wireless computing toward more efficient network resource management schemes. Path prediction allows the network and services to further enhance the quality of service levels the user enjoys. Such mechanisms are mostly meaningful in infrastructures like wireless LANs. In this article we present a path prediction algorithm that exploits the machine learning algorithm of learning automata. The decision of the learning automaton is driven by the movement patterns of a single user but is also affected by the aggregated patterns demonstrated by all users. Simulations of the algorithm, performed using the Realistic Mobility Pattern Generator, show increased prediction accuracy.

We explore how techniques that were developed to improve the training process of artificial neural networks can be used to speed up fuzzy clustering. The basic idea of our approach is to regard the difference between two consecutive steps of the alternating optimization scheme of fuzzy clustering as providing a gradient, which may be modified in the same way as the gradient of neural network back-propagation is modified in order to improve training. Our experimental results show that some methods actually lead to a considerable acceleration of the clustering process.

The problems related to supporting multicast connections with quality of service (QoS) requirements are studied. We investigate the problem of optimal resource allocation in the context of performance dependent costs. In this context each network element can offer several QoS guarantees, each associated with a different cost. This is a natural extension to the commonly used bi-criteria model, where each link is associated with a single delay and a single cost. This framework is simple yet strong enough to model many practical interesting networking problems. The fundamental multicast resource allocation problem under this framework is how to optimally allocate QoS requirements on the links of the multicast tree. One needs to partition the end-to-end QoS requirement along the various paths in a tree. The goal is to satisfy the end-to-end QoS requirement with minimum cost. Previous studies under this framework considered single-source multicast connections, where the end-to-end QoS requirement is specified from the source to all other multicast group members. In this paper we extend these results to the more general, and considerably harder case of multicast sessions, where the end-to-end requirement hold for every path between any two multicast group members. Our aim is to provide rigorous solutions, with proven performance guarantees, by way of algorithmic analysis. The problem under investigation is NP hard for general cost functions, thus we first present a pseudopolynomial exact solution. From this solution we derive two efficient /spl epsi/-approximate solutions. One achieves optimal cost, but may violate the end-to-end delay requirement by a factor of (1 + /spl epsi/), and the other strictly obeys the bounds and achieves a cost within a factor of (1+/spl epsi/) of the optimum. Furthermore, we present improved results for discrete cost functions, and give a simple linear-time exact polynomial solution for a specific, and practically interesting, family of convex

We demonstrate the evolution of simple embodied Genetic Regulatory networks (GRNs) as real-time control systems for robotic and software-based embodied Artificial Organisms, and present results from two experimental test-beds: homeostatic temperature regulation in an abstract software environment, and phototactic robot behaviour maximising exposure to light. The GRN controllers are continually coupled to the organisms’ environments throughout their lifetimes, and constitute the primary basis for the organisms’ behaviour from moment to moment. The environment in which the organisms are embodied is shown to play a significant role in the dynamics of the GRNs, and the behaviour of the organisms. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

Consensus is known to be a fundamental problem in fault-tolerant distributed systems. Solving this problem provides the means for distributed processes to agree on a single value. This, however, requires extra communication efforts. For some real-time communication networks such efforts may have undesirable performance implications due to their limited bandwidth. This is certainly the case with the controller area network (CAN), which is widely used to support real-time systems. This paper shows how some underlying properties of CAN can be used to solve the consensus problem. The proposed consensus protocol tolerates the maximum number of process crashes, is efficient and flexible. The described solution is proved correct, its complexity is analyzed and its performance is evaluated by simulation.

As networks have become an important infrastructure in everyday life in recent years, the need to increase the degree of quality control has also arisen. Because it is necessary to accurately understand the state of the network for quality control, time information on measurement equipment has become important Consequently, we have aimed at improving the precision of time synchronization through the network and propose highly precise time synchronization techniques that utilize network support Two approaches are MQL (maximum queue length) and QTL (queue to live) both employing the suggested "self-discarding packet technique", which is a means of determining transfer by comparing the queue length of the transiting router with a specified queue value on the probing packet. In this paper, we clarify the influence a router has on the precision of time synchronization and report these two approaches and their adaptability.

An External Broker Interface Based on Existing Trading Protocols

This paper presents an approach to the specification of external interfaces of an electronic broker used in the Architecture for Electronic Brokerage systems (AEBS). The external interface specified by the AEBS architecture provides both rich functionality and backward compatibility with trading methods that are currently in use in the electronic marketplace. This is achieved by defining the interface at two levels: the external protocol interface and the external object interface. The external protocol interface has been defined in terms of traditional protocols in order to provide access to basic brokerage services for customers and suppliers that already operate in the electronic market. This facilitates the easy introduction of a broker to the market since no modifications are required on the customer or supplier side to use the new brokerage services. The advanced external object interface has been designed and defined using the CORBA model. This provides other actors that need advanced brokerage services with access to the full functionality of a broker. This paper focuses on the design of the external protocol interface of a brokerage system. © 2002, Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Over the past decade, clusters of workstations have become widely accepted as a cost efficient way of obtaining computational power. Moreover, clusters have increasingly been used to support multi-application environment, such as web servers and application servers, and to concurrently support a number of different services. In such an environment, resources become difficult to manage, e.g., it is difficult to adequately support the varying memory usage requirements of each application with a single strategy. In this paper we propose a policy-based model that provides applications with an interface to the underlying system in order to adapt the behavior of system services at runtime. The use of policies is illustrated by presenting the design of a memory management model for distributed shared memory systems, which allows different memory placement policies, while providing the ability to change consistency and coherency protocols at runtime.

Security Implications of Typical Grid Computing Usage Scenarios

Grid Computing consists of a collection of heterogeneous computers and resources spread across multiple administrative domains with the intent of providing users uniform access to these resources. There are many ways to access the resources of a Grid, each with unique security requirements and implications for both the resource user and the resource provider. A comprehensive set of Grid usage scenarios is presented and analyzed with regard to security requirements such as authentication, authorization, integrity, and confidentiality. The main value of these scenarios and the associated security discussions is to provide a library of situations against which an application designer can match, thereby facilitating security-aware application use and development from the initial stages of the application design and invocation. A broader goal of these scenarios is to increase the awareness of security issues in Grid Computing.
