International Symposium on Object-Oriented Real-Time distributed Computing

There is a trend towards using object-oriented programming languages to develop hard real-time applications. However some object-oriented features, such as dynamic dispatching and dynamic loading, are prohibited from being used in hard realtime systems because they are either unpredictable and/or un-analysable. Arguably, these restrictions could make applications very limited and unrealistic since they could eliminate the major advantages of object-oriented programming. This paper demonstrates how we can address the dynamic dispatching issues in Worst-Case Execution Timing (WCET) analysis with minimum annotations. The major contributions include: discussing the major issues involved in using and restricting dynamic binding features; weakening the restriction of using dynamic dispatching; presenting how to estimate tighter and safer WCET value in object-oriented hard real-time systems. Our approach shows that allowing the use of dynamic dispatching can not only provide a more flexible way to develop object-oriented hard real-time applications, but also does not necessarily result in unpredictable timing analysis.

In this paper we consider a problem of source separation when sources are second-order nonstationary stochastic processes. We employ the natural gradient method and develop learning algorithms for both linear feedback and feedforward neural networks. Thus our algorithms possess equivariant property. The local stability analysis shows that separating solutions are always locally stable stationary points of the proposed algorithms, regardless of probability distributions of sources.

There exist some studies in proportional delay scheduling algorithms for a Differentiated Service (DiffServ) network which schedule the packets between different classes proportionally based on queuing delay. Traditionally, it is necessary to implement such proportional delay scheduling algorithms at all the routers of the network for receiving proportional delay between different classes. In this paper, we propose a new and simple model, which does not provide proportional delay but delay jitter between different classes. In addition, we point out that for receiving proportional jitter in such a DiffServ Network, it is only necessary to implement a proportional jitter scheduling algorithm at the boundary of the network. Furthermore, we propose some networks using RJPS (relative jitter packet scheduling) and WTP (waiting time priority) at different positions (core or egress) and a playout buffer delay adjustment algorithm (Concord algorithm) at the receiver. Finally we compare its performance in terms of normalized end-to-end delay with different loss probabilities at the playout buffer. Our first result showed that a proportional jitter DiffServ network achieves better performance while keeping the cost of implementation lower in some cases. © 2002 IEEE.

In this study, we are concerned with a modularization of fuzzy relational equations that is converting a highly dimensional (multivariable) relational equation into a series of single input fuzzy relational equations. The problem originates from a need of handling (estimating) highly dimensional relational structures and is inherently associated with the curse of dimensionality present in relational fuzzy models. We propose a two-layer architecture and discuss a detailed optimization scheme leading to the determination of the fuzzy relations occurring there. Illustrative numerical studies are also included.

In addition to the integration of vehicles into traditional networks (e.g. access to the Internet via cellular) the Ad-hoc connection of vehicles within a limited area is a technology that promises a lot of innovative and exciting services. This paper starts with the description of some services to motivate Ad-hoc networking in the vehicular environment. It then gives an overview of the current challenges (especially routing protocols) in this field. If the geographic position of the network nodes is known, better performance can be achieved with the utilization of so called geocast routing-algorithms. An overview of geocast-routing is given and shortcomings of the existing protocols for the usage in inter-vehicle Ad-hoc networks are explained. Finally we make a proposal for a vehicle-optimized geocast routing, protocol that is based on AODV and present our prototype implementation.

In this article, a framework to integrate negotiation capabilities—particularly, components implementing a negotiation strategy—into mobile agents is described. This approach is conceptually based on the notion of an actor system which decomposes an application component into autonomously executing subcomponents cooperating with each other. Technically, the framework is based on a plug-in mechanism enabling a dynamic composition of negotiating agents. Additionally, this contribution describes how interaction-oriented rule mechanisms can be deployed to control the behavior of strategy actors. © 2001, Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Computational intelligence techniques have been successfully used for solving control problems in p ache t-switching network architectures. The introduction of active networking adds a high degree of flexibility in customizing the network infrastructure and introducing new functionality. Therefore, there is a clear need for investigating both the applicability of computational intelligence techniques in this new networking environment, as well as the provisions of active networking technology that computational intelligence techniques can exploit for improved operation. We report on the characteristics of these technologies, their synergy and on outline recent efforts in the design of a computational intelligence toolkit and its application to routing on a novel active networking environment. © 2001 ACM.

The predominant Web search model attempts to use multiple computers under centralised management to act as one search engine for the entire Web. As the quantity of online information increases, systems based on this model become prohibitively expensive for all but the largest organisations. We advocate the use of distributed search architectures where multiple independently owned and managed search engines act as one search system. This approach has significant advantages including low market entry cost for individual search providers and the potential to stimulate the provision of high-quality services through competition. The low entry cost allows small organisations and even individual users to influence service features and quality by establishing specialised search services. However, independent proprietorship also greatly complicates the search system design. The potential for competition between engines requires new approaches to effective engine management Many new issues arise such as deciding what information an engine will index. In this paper we analyse the sources of complexity in distributed Web search architectures with independent proprietorship and competition between engines. We outline possible ways to cope with this complexity using techniques from the field of computational economics such as game theory.

Middleware has emerged as an important architectural component in modern distributed systems. Most recently, industry has witnessed the emergence of component-based middleware platforms, such as Enterprise JavaBeans and the CORBA Component Model, aimed at supporting third party development, configuration and subsequent deployment of software. The goal of our research is to extend this work in order to exploit the benefits of component-based approaches within the middleware platform as well as on top of the platform, the result being more configurable and reconfigurable middleware technologies. This is achieved through a marriage of components with reflection, the latter providing the necessary levels of openness to access the underlying component infrastructure. More specifically, the paper describes in detail the OpenCOM component model, a lightweight and efficient component model based on COM. The paper also describes how OpenCOM can be used to construct a full middleware platform, and also investigates the performance of both OpenCOM and this resultant platform. The main overall contribution of the paper is to demonstrate that flexible middleware technologies can be developed without an adverse effect on the performance of resultant systems. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.
