In previous work, we have confirmed the performance gains that can be obtained in speaker recognition by splitting the (clean) wideband speech signal into several subbands, employing separate pattern classifiers for each subband, and then using multiple classifier fusion (‘recombination’) techniques to produce a final decision. However, our earlier work used fairly rudimentary recognition techniques (dynamic time warping), just sum or product fusion rules and the spoken word seven only. The question then arises: Can subband processing still deliver performance gains when using state-of-the-art recognition techniques, more sophisticated recombination, and different spoken digits? To answer this, we have applied hidden Markov modelling and artificial neural network (ANN) recombination to text-dependent speaker identification, for spoken digits seven and nine. We find that ANN recombination performs about as well as the sum rule operating in log probability space, but the ANN results are not unique. They depend critically on user- specified parameters, initialisation, etc. On clean speech, all classifiers achieve close to 100% identification. Subband techniques offer advantages when the speech signal is significantly degraded by noise. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

This paper presents a novel wireless access point architecture designed to support the development of next generation mobile context-aware applications over metropolitan scale areas. In addition, once deployed, this network will allow ordinary citizens secure, accountable and convenient access to the Internet from their local city and campus environments. The proposed architecture is based on an approach utilising a modified Mobile IPv6 protocol stack that uses packet marking and network level packet filtering at the edge of the wired network to achieve this objective. The paper describes this architecture in detail and contrasts it with existing systems to highlight the key benefits of our approach. © 2001 ACM.

A mobile ad-hoc network (Manet) is a system of wireless mobile nodes dynamically self-organizing in arbitrary and temporary network topologies. People and vehicles can thus be internetworked in areas without a pre-existing communication infrastructure, or when the use of such infrastructure requires wireless extension. Therefore, such networks are designed to operate in widely varying environments, from military networks to low-power sensor networks and other embedded systems. Frequent topology changes caused by node mobility make routing in ad hoc wireless networks a challenging problem. We focus upon routing protocols for ad hoc networks. We study and compare the performance of several routing protocols. A variety of workload and scenarios using a variety of mobility, load and size of the ad hoc network were simulated.

Ad hoc networks are wireless, mobile networks that can be set up anywhere and anytime without the aid of any established infrastructure or centralized administration. Because of the limited range of each host's wireless transmission, to communicate with hosts outside its transmission range, a host needs to enlist the aid of its nearby hosts in forwarding packets to the destination. However, since there is no stationary infrastructure such as base stations, each host has to act as a router for itself. A routing protocol for ad hoc networks is executed on every host and is therefore subject to the limit of the resources at each mobile host. A good routing protocol should minimize the computing load on the host as well as the traffic overhead on the network. Therefore, a number of routing protocols have been proposed for ad hoc wireless networks. We focus upon on-demand schemes. We study and compare the performance of the following three routing protocols AODV, CBRP and DSR. A variety of workload and scenarios, as characterized by mobility, load and size of the ad hoc network were simulated. Our results indicate that despite its improvement in reducing route request packets, CBRP has a higher overhead than DSR because of its periodic hello messages while AODV's end-to-end packet delay is the shortest when compared to DSR and CBRP.

The rapid development in portable computing platforms, distributed multimedia systems and wireless communication technologies has led to a significant interest in mobile multimedia and wireless networking. Video entertainment and multimedia Internet access over wireless networks are examples of future wireless personal communication systems. These, however, incur challenging technological issues. The synchronization of the multimedia objects among mobile clients is one of the most important of these issues. The task of synchronization in wireless multimedia systems is to eliminate variations and delays incurred during the transmission of multiple-media streams and to maintain the temporal order among the various media streams. We propose an efficient distributed multimedia synchronization algorithm for wireless and mobile multimedia systems to ensure and facilitate mobile clients' access to multimedia objects. We discuss the algorithm and provide its formal proof and correctness.

Ubiquitous computing is associated with a vision of everything being connected to everything. However, for successful applications to emerge, it will not be the quantity but the quality and usefulness of connections that will matter. Our concern is how qualitative relations and more selective connections can be established between smart artefacts, and how users can retain control over artefact interconnection. We propose context proximity for selective artefact communication, using the context of artefacts for matchmaking. We further suggest to empower users with simple but effective means to impose the same context on a number of artefacts. To prove our point we have implemented Smart-Its Friends, small embedded devices that become connected when a user holds them together and shakes them. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

The presence of network errors such as electrical interference affects the timing properties of a CAN (Controller Area Network) bus. In hard real-time systems it is often better to not receive a message than to receive it too late. Aborting late messages is a form of real-time error confinement which prevents late messages affecting the timeliness of other messages and processes. This can be used to help guarantee hard real-time performance in a distributed system using CAN in the presence of unbounded network errors.

Workflow techniques are emerging as an important approach for the specification and management of complex processing tasks. This approach is especially powerful for utilising distributed data and processing resources in widely-distributed heterogeneous systems. We describe our DISCWorld distributed workflow environment for composing complex processing chains, which are specified as a directed acyclic graph of operators. Users of our system can formulate processing chains using either graphical or scripting tools. We have deployed our system for image processing applications and decision support systems. We describe the technologies we have developed to enable the execution of these processing chains across wide-area computing systems. In particular, we present our distributed Job Placement Language (based on XML) and various Java interface approaches we have developed for implementing the workflow metaphor. We outline a number of key issues for implementing a high-performance, reliable, distributed workflow management system.

Problem solving environments are an attractive approach to the integration of calculation and management tools for various scientific and engineering applications. These applications often require high performance computing components in order to be computationally feasible. It is therefore a challenge to construct integration technology, suitable for problem solving environments, that allows both flexibility as well as the embedding of parallel and high performance computing systems. Our DISCWorld system is designed to meet these needs and provides a Java-based middleware to integrate component applications across wide-area networks. Key features of our design are the abilities to: access remotely stored data; compose complex processing requests either graphically or through a scripting language; execute components on heterogeneous and remote platforms; reconfigure task subgraphs to run across multiple servers. Operators in task graphs can be slow (but portable) pure Java implementations or wrappers to fast (platform specific) supercomputer implementations.
