Previous work has demonstrated the performance gains that can be obtained in speaker recognition by applying subband processing, together with hidden Markov modelling and multiple classifier recombination. Two recombination rules have been investigated: the sum of log likelihoods, which corresponds to the optimal Bayes' rule under certain constraints, and multilayer perceptrons (MLP), which are not subject to these constraints. It was found that for two spoken digits in the presence of a single case of narrowband noise the sum of log likelihoods and MLP achieved comparable performance. In this paper, the previous work is extended in the direction of investigating the robustness of the recognition system to different narrowband noise. Two approaches are taken towards this aim. Firstly, narrowband noise is added at different centre frequencies. Secondly, a Bayesian MLP approach is investigated using automatic relevance determination (ARD) on the subband inputs to the MLP. From this it is possible to assess the relative importance of the subbands to recognition performance. Results for the new noise conditions show that the sum of log likelihoods generally does better than the (average) MLP fusion.

This paper considers the selective drop (SD) algorithm, a packet aware buffer acceptance algorithm used with the unspecified bit rate ATM service category. The influence of the parameters of the SD algorithm on the transient performance results (efficiency and fairness) is studied when starting from an unfair start situation. This is done using an analytical model where two responsive sources send their traffic in packets consisting of cells via a buffer on which the SD algorithm is implemented. Three different scheduling algorithms are used in combination with the SD algorithm. Based on an extensive set of numerical examples, observations are made. From these results, one of the most important conclusions is that a large improvement of the fairness results is seen when SD is implemented, irrespective of the exact setting of its parameters. On the efficiency results, these parameters have however a more important effect. So it is recommended to implement SD to increase the fairness, but with a parameter setting focussed on the efficiency results.

A Computational Grid is a collection of heterogeneous computers and resources spread across multiple administrative domains with the intent of providing users easy access to these resources. There are many ways to access the resources of a Computational Grid, each with unique security requirements and implications for both the resource user and the resource provider. A comprehensive set of Grid usage scenarios is presented and analyzed with regard to security requirements such as authentication, authorization, integrity, and confidentiality. The main value of these scenarios and the associated security discussions is to provide a library of situations against which an application designer can match, thereby facilitating security-aware application use and development from the initial stages of the application design and invocation. A broader goal of these scenarios is to increase the awareness of security issues in Grid Computing. The purpose of this paper is to review the various Grid usage scenarios and analyze their security requirements and implications.

Computational intelligence techniques have been successfully used for solving control problems in packet-switching network architectures. The introduction of active networking adds a high degree of flexibility in customizing the network infrastructure and introducing new functionality. Therefore, there is a clear need for investigating both the applicability of computational intelligence techniques in this new networking environment, as well as the provisions of active networking technology that computational intelligence techniques can exploit for improved operation. We report on the characteristics of these technologies, their synergy and on outline recent efforts in the design of a computational intelligence toolkit and its application to routing on a novel active networking environment.

This paper presents a Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol for broadband wireless LANs based on the ATM transfer mode, together with the evaluation of its performance in terms of throughput and access delay. Important characteristics of the MAC protocol are the way information between the Mobile Stations (MSs) and the Base Station (BS) is exchanged and the algorithm used to allocate the bandwidth in order to support the service categories. A detailed analytical evaluation, both on cell level and packet level, leads to an assessment of the efficiency and the access delay of the system.

There exist some studies in proportional scheduling algorithms for differentiated service networks which schedule the packets between different classes proportionally based on certain metrics, such as bandwidth, loss and delay. In this paper, the behaviors of RJPS (Relative Jitter Packet Scheduler) and another proportional delay scheduler (WTP), as well as its influence on the playout buffer, which uses the Concord delay adjustment algorithm, are examined. Our simulations show that RJPS is more convergent and produces a smaller delay than WTP via the same network with the same loss rate. Finally, we propose a network using both RJPS and WTP for minimizing the network delay of each class. © 2001 IEEE.

With the introduction of Wireless Local Area Networking technology in recent years, many exciting applications are now closer to becoming a reality. One such application is the smart car or automated vehicle - a car capable of transporting its passenger(s) to their intended destination without human intervention. For this application, automated vehicles need to be able to co-ordinate with each other in a reliable and timely fashion. A logical approach to this problem would be to use existing real-time group communication techniques. However, existing techniques have been designed with a more static network in mind. In particular, group membership is more dynamic in the automated vehicle application. In this paper we outline new requirements for group communication suitable for such mobile applications. Such group communication must take into account the proximity of members of the group to each other. The Anois project, at Trinity College Dublin, is currently developing such a group communication system addressing these new requirements that arise due to mobility.

An executing thread, in an object oriented programming language, is spawned, directly or indirectly, by a main process. This in turn gets its instructions from a primary class. In Java there is no close coupling of a thread and the objects from which they were created. The use of a container abstraction allows us to group threads and their respective objects into a single structure. A container that holds threads whose variables are all housed within the container is a perfect candidate for strong migration. To achieve this we propose a combination of three techniques to allow the containers to migrate in a manner that approaches strong mobility yet does not resort to retaining bindings to resources across distant and unreliable networks.

Data distribution management (DDM) is one of the services defined by the DoD High Level Architecture. DDM is necessary to provide efficient, scalable mechanisms for distributing state updates and interaction information in large scale distributed simulations. We describe data distribution management mechanisms (also known as filtering) used for real time training simulations. We propose a new DDM approach to multicast group allocation, which we refer to as a dynamic grid-based allocation. Our scheme is based on a combination of a fixed grid-based method, known for its low overhead and ease of implementation, and a sender-based strategy, which uses fewer multicast groups than the fixed grid-based method. We describe our DDM algorithm, its implementation, and report on the performance results that we have obtained using the RTI-Kit framework. These results include the outcome of experiments comparing our approach to the fixed grid-based method, and they show that our scheme is scalable and significantly reduces the message overhead of previous grid-based allocation schemes.
