For a number of years, work has been performed in collaboration with industry to establish improved techniques for achieving and proving the system timing constraints. The specific requirements encountered during the course of this work for both uniprocessor and distributed systems indicate a need for an efficient mechanism for handling the timing analysis of task sets which feature offsets. Little research has been performed on this subject. This paper will describe a new technique tailored to a set of real world problems so that the results are effective and the complexity is manageable.

Modern web-based Scientific Visualization applications try to overcome common limitations imposed by limited internet bandwidth, server bottlenecks or network latency. A further aspect is the desire to gain platform independence by solely using instruments which are platform independent by conception: the programming language Java, the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML), or the 3D API *** present a prototype of a hybrid web-based Scientific Visualization system which makes use of the increasing computational power of modern desktop workstations and personal computers on the client side, and the superior performance provided by a powerful machine on the server side. In order to achieve high interaction rates and to balance computational load the user can dynamically assign selected tasks to his client or to the *** the scientific field of human modeling we have implemented a hybrid web-based toolkit for the modeling of human muscles and skin. Our application allows the on-line generation and manipulation of three-dimensional implicit muscle models in a heterogeneous network and it offers various parameters to adjust computation and response time versus rendering quality. © 1997 IEEE computer Society.

Parallel programming on loosely coupled distributed systems is becoming a viable approach with the rapid increase in network speeds and availability of large amounts of unused CPU capacity on individual workstations. Parallel programs are often written for a specific configuration of the distributed system such as the number of nodes, their relative speeds and their network connections. These programs perform poorly when there is a change in the configuration or when they are taken to a system other than what they are intended for. We propose a new paradigm which can express the scale of a program as a part of the program itself. The scale of the program is specified in an abstract manner for an arbitrary number of nodes, their relative speeds and their network connections. The runtime system uses this information to decide the actual scale of program on a given distributed system.

In mobile collaborative applications, collaborating agents can move across heterogeneous networks. The collaborating agents also keep changing their roles depending on the work to be performed at that time. In such situations, a simple and flexible handling of the transition between heterogeneous environments and roles is required. This paper proposes PolyConstraints, a design pattern to handle the generic problem of transitions across multiple network environments and roles.

Real-time field buses are currently a significant issue in both process control and manufacturing areas. They constitute the base upon which real-time fault-tolerant distributed systems can be designed for these application areas. A potential large leap towards the use of Fieldbus in such time-critical applications lies in the evaluation of its temporal behaviour. In particular an important problem associated with the Fieldbus FIP is its inability to guarantee the timing performance of sporadic traffic. In this paper we develop the pre-run-time schedulability analysis of FIP bounding the worst case response time of the sporadic traffic.

Concerns multisensor data fusion (MSDF) for situational assessment for real time complex processes. All three elements of the SHORE (stimulus-hypothesis-response) paradigm have been considered by the ISIS group for demonstrating this architecture for systems integration of a fully autonomous road, cross-country and drilling vehicle on CEC Project Panorama. MSDF is a continuous process dealing with the association correlation, and combination of data and information from multiple disparate sources to achieve a refined state estimate about the environment and timely assessment of the situation. Here we only consider the processes of data integration and state estimation. To integrate data from disparate data sources such as sensors, look-up tables, human experiences/observations, data bases, etc a common currency of information content and data representation is required. Existing theories such as Bayesian, Dempster-Shafer, artificial neural networks (ANN), case-based reasoning, method of endorsement, blackboard expert systems, fuzzy logic etc.-all of which have been used for MSDF-are inadequate or inappropriate. We propose neurofuzzy algorithms, since they readily incorporate database knowledge/symbolic/linguistic knowledge in the form of fuzzy rules, and sensory data in a single environment/processor.

This research aims to develop a neural-network-oriented object matching system that can provide translation, rotation and scale invariant recognition even when the object is partially occluded. Unlike classification, the goal in object matching is extended to extract the geometric pose of the object in addition to identity. Most earlier attempts to apply neural networks in object matching assumed a close to noiseless matching environment, or relied on application-specific a priori knowledge to simplify the computation. We consider the cases where the feature extraction process is imperfect, where the environment cannot be controlled and the resulting scene is noisy with respect to the model. We present a novel and effective paradigm based on modified Kohonen neural networks. The merit of this approach is that it offers a scheme for multiple concurrent searches. These focus on different regions of the feature space and interact co-operatively using a compact framework comprising two Kohonen feature maps. The scheme has been subjected to a wide spectrum of rigorous tests, and results have proven to be reasonably accurate even in the presence of noisy scenes and with a large search space.

Over recent years, the focus of artificial intelligence (AI) research has shifted from top-down simulation of high-level cognitive functions based on (essentially-ungrounded) symbolic computations to consideration of the way that intelligent behaviour can emerge in bottom-up fashion in systems situated in the 'real' world. Inspirations from neurobiology and concepts of neural information processing have been very influential in this 'new' AI: most usually in the guise of 'parallel distributed processing' approaches operating at a high level of abstraction, or the more detailed and biologically-realistic 'computational neuroscience' paradigm. In this paper, we describe a biologically-motivated approach to learning in situated robots based on the computational neuroscience paradigm. The mechanisms by which such learning occurs are habituation, sensitization and classical conditioning of the neural responses involved in basic, pre-existing ('hand-wired') reflexes. Emergent light-seeking and collision-avoidance behaviors are observed in an adaptive mobile robot embodying these learning principles, as a result of interaction with its environment.
