Intelligent Transportation systems (ITSs) increasingly rely on cloud computing to gather and process vehicular data, enabling the development of adaptable transportation solutions. However, the availability of such data is often limited by privacy, security, and commercial concerns, challenging the open research in ITS. Existing datasets rarely include both intra-vehicular data (created from or inside the vehicle) and extra-vehicular data (created from surrounding sources) or provide flexible scenarios for data extraction. This paper introduces a methodology to collect and publish ITS data, including intra and extra-vehicular sensor data. A quantitative analysis was conducted as part of the data characterization to show the associated data challenges. Moreover, the dataset collected is freely accessible, allowing innovation in ITS research and application development. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper proposes a method enabling mobile LoRa gateways to support mobile end devices. The approach utilizes trilateration and similar approaches based on RSSI to estimate the position of end devices and specify the movement of the gateways to maintain contact. The evaluation of the proposed method tests various parameters such as speed and number of end devices, and it shows that it is able to retain contact even with speeds up to 12 mps. Moreover, the evaluation shows that the ADR-MIN algorithm performs better in this scenario than the default ADR. © 2024 IEEE.

Deterministic Finite Wheeler Automata are a natural generalisation to regular languages of the theory of compressed data structures originated by the introduction of the Burrows-Wheeler transform. Indeed, if we can find a Wheeler automaton recognizing a given language L, such automaton can be used to design time and space efficient algorithms for representing and searching L. In this paper we introduce an alternative representation of Deterministic Wheeler Automata by showing that a natural map between strings and rational numbers in Qr0, 1q can be extended to represent the automaton’s states as intervals in Qr0, 1q. Using this representation it emerges a natural relationship between automata properties and some properties of real numbers. In addition, such representation enables us to formulate problems related to automata in a numerical setting. Although at the moment the numerical approach does not lead to time efficient algorithms, we believe this new perspective deserves further consideration. As a further demonstration of the convenience of this new representation, we use it to provide a simple proof of an unexpected result on regular languages. More precisely, we compare the size of the smallest Wheeler automaton recognizing a given language L with respect to the size of the smallest automaton, possibly non-Wheeler, recognizing the same language. We show settings in which there can be an exponential gap between the two sizes, and we discuss the implications of this result on the problem of representing regular languages. © Giovanni Manzini, Alberto Policriti, Nicola Prezza, and Brian Riccardi.

Cloud Computing considers one of the most significant innovations that has aroused the curiosity of technologists all around the world. It has many advantages, but it also has a large number of challenges that reduce the efficiency of this technology, including scheduling tasks, which is crucial for organizing user needs and achieving numerous objectives. Because cloud computing serves millions of users at once, it must be able to meet all user needs with excellent performance and a guarantee of the quality of service. Therefore, to fairly and effectively fulfill these requirements, a suitable tasks scheduling system is required. The scheduling solutions should be chosen to satisfy the varied user needs while minimizing the make-span and expense. Task scheduling is employed to assign specific tasks to specific resources at one particular time. The issues with task scheduling have been addressed using a wide variety of ways. Task scheduling's fundamental tenet is to prioritize performance and minimize time lost between activities. In this paper, an overview of the different scheduling approaches used in the cloud is proposed. This paper also discusses the scheduling parameters used in these methods. As well as this paper suggest scenario of scheduling framework that addresses the significant challenges of scheduling tasks in the cloud by dividing the incoming tasks into three groups based on critical tasks (insensitive task, sensitive task and more sensitive task) and other requirements such as minimum execution time or minimum of cost and prioritization. © 2022 IEEE.

Power dissipation and energy consumption are key factors for the performance improvement of modern technology systems. In recent years, several strategies have been proposed to solve the power management issues on embedded systems. In this paper, we classify the state of the art of those techniques. Classification is done based on run-time, activation, and idle state of the different components of the network on chip (NoC). We illustrate the requirement of power management based on several important parameters. A highlight is put on the drawbacks and benefits. Also, classification is done based on different NoC abstraction levels. However, by this paper, we intend to guide the researchers and application developers in getting insights about the strategies of power management techniques that will lead to the design of more efficient high performances in embedded systems of the future. © 2023 IEEE.

Cloud combined with Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) empowers service creators and application developers with promising architectural design and communication performance improvements. In fifth generation (5G) and in 6G cellular networks, MEC gains more importance as a service platform to enable new applications. However, as of today, the availability of MEC resources in public networks is still low, thus not much communication performance measurement data exists. In this work, we use our private, city-level 5 G test bed, to evaluate the end-to-end communication performance to different edge and cloud endpoints through realistic outdoor field tests. Multiple topological locations of the edge service are evaluated, the network is operated in stand-alone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) modes, and two-way as well as one-way latency measurements with multiple traffic patterns are performed. The measurements are executed in different environmental settings: fixed position and drive tests, including 5 G cell hand-overs. The results not only demonstrate the performance benefits gained from MEC resources, but also show the impact of the communication system and user mobility to Quality of Service (QoS) parameters. Especially for different traffic patterns and for the performance during our drive tests, our results show the time overhead required for exchanging data, which may be challenging for service lookups or delay-constrained applications.

Edge computing enhances cloud architectures through the integration of distributed platforms that operate closer to end-users. With dynamically changing network topologies, user mobility, multiple access networks, demand-driven service orchestration, and consequently several distributed service instances that are available, methods for selecting edge resources must adapt to these conditions. This consideration is particularly relevant for edge computing, where target applications often have strict Quality of Service (QoS) constraints. This work proposes an edge resource selection scheme that considers several QoS parameters, computing load, and service usage cost. These metrics are employed to derive a selection score through four distinct algorithms. The overall performance of each algorithm is evaluated by scoring examples, a sensitivity analysis, and in a system-level simulation of a fifth generation (5G) cellular network with user mobility and multiple Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) platforms. The results show that all approaches perform well under unambiguous QoS and load conditions, i.e., very good or very poor, but some lose accuracy under moderate, but still acceptable, conditions. For the goal of cost-optimized selection while meeting QoS constraints, one novel method presented is significantly superior to the others. Used in simulation, it generates 12% more computing load on cheaper platforms than its closest competitor, and maintains significantly lower loads on high-cost platforms.

This paper delves into the challenges of binary classification using imbalanced datasets, particularly when instances of interest are infrequent. It explores a comprehensive approach that integrates Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE), Generative Adversarial networks (GANs), and Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) to enhance classification outcomes. Traditional classification models tend to favor the majority class, while the impact of imbalanced misclassification costs is often overlooked. The integration of SMOTE, GANs, and VAEs in binary classification, or SMOTE-GAN-VAE, addresses these challenges by generating synthetic instances, refining data representations, and capturing latent features. To evaluate the effectiveness of various data generation methods, a credit card fraud dataset is used. The performance metrics considered include F0.5-score, F1-score, and F2-score, which account for both precision and recall. The results indicate that SMOTE-GAN-VAE outperforms individual methods, such as SMOTE, GANs, and VAEs, demonstrating its potential to enhance data representation and classification accuracy, and outperformed the ß- VAE filtered approach employed in previous literature. © 2024 IEEE.

Pull-Based Query Scheduling for Goal-Oriented Semantic communication

This paper addresses query scheduling for goal-oriented semantic communication in pull-based status update systems. We consider a system where multiple sensing agents (SAs) observe a source characterized by various attributes and provide updates to multiple actuation agents (AAs), which act upon the received information to fulfill their heterogeneous goals at the endpoint. A hub serves as an intermediary, querying the SAs for updates on observed attributes and maintaining a knowledge base, which is then broadcast to the AAs. The AAs leverage the knowledge to perform their actions effectively. To quantify the semantic value of updates, we introduce a grade of effectiveness (GoE) metric. Furthermore, we integrate cumulative perspective theory (CPT) into the long-term effectiveness analysis to account for risk awareness and loss aversion in the system. Leveraging this framework, we compute effect-aware scheduling policies aimed at maximizing the expected discounted sum of CPT-based total GoE provided by the transmitted updates while complying with a given query cost constraint. To achieve this, we propose a model-based solution based on dynamic programming and model-free solutions employing state-of-the-art deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithms. Our findings demonstrate that effect-aware scheduling significantly enhances the effectiveness of communicated updates compared to benchmark scheduling methods, particularly in settings with stringent cost constraints where optimal query scheduling is vital for system performance and overall effectiveness. Genetic algorithms are widely used for solving optimization problems. As the search space of the problem is augmented, the probability of falling into local minima will be augmented as well. Previous works showed that the adjusted phase (i.e. required modification per generation), may enhance badly the optimality reaching. Moreover, the search for suitable probabilities on crossover and mutation results in huge computational complexity. Recent developments in quantum technology have shown that quantum computers can provide a dramatic advantage over classical computers. This paper will be oriented toward computer scientists interested in the quantum genetic algorithm (QGA). Therefore, we will present a discussion, of the pros, and cons of classical GA. We survey the 'state of the art' of the most known techniques for evolving evolutionary algorithms and quantum computing. We intend in this work to help researchers and application developers in gaining insights into the power of quantum computing mechanisms. This science can inherently treat the balance between exploration and exploitation of the search space. This property is due to the use of Q-bits. The orientation toward the best solution is due to the use of Q-gates. © 2023 IEEE.
