This paper suggests a voting algorithm for predicting people's choices. Usually, once a new algorithm is offered, one needs to prove the soundness of the algorithm, i.e., showing that the algorithm does the thing it is set up to do. But in the case of election prediction algorithms it's not clear how to prove their soundness. This paper offers a way to deal with this problem by analysing the social networks of plays, following Shakespeare dictum: "all the world is a stage, and all the men and women merely players", As you like it, act I scene VII. The advantage of this approach is clear. The story of Julius Caesar is part of our collective memory. We learn the leading characters views and opinions throughout the play. For example, we know that Brutus was against Caesar, while Antony supported Caesar, and opposed Brutus. By generating the social graph from a play, the problems of soundness is solved, which makes the process more scientific. The voting algorithm needs anchors for each party. The anchors are the characters/nodes whose opinions are clear and known. In the case of the play Julius Caesar, the anchors are Brutus and Cassius for the conspirators and Antony and Octavius for the supporters of Caesar. After the anchors were identified the voting algorithm uses simple random walks, to divide the network of characters into two parties. Now it is possible to examine the output of the voting algorithm and see that indeed the algorithm works correctly.

We study the ability of Inter-Vehicle communication (IVC) solutions to handle real-time requirements in safety scenarios using beaconing as a communication primitive. One of the envisioned safety applications is intersection assistance. The objective of such applications is to either warn the driver or even to act autonomously if other approaching vehicles endanger the vehicle. Fairness, combined with aggressive channel access for low-latency safety messages, has been one of the main research line according to which state of the art congestion control mechanisms have been developed. We show that these solutions are not able to sufficiently support intersection assistance applications. Specifically, we show that current approaches fail exactly due to their fairness postulation. We propose a new situation-aware solution to this fairness dilemma by allowing temporary exceptions for vehicles in dangerous situations. We show the applicability for two state of the art congestion control mechanisms, namely ETSI Transmit Rate Control (TRC) and Dynamic Beaconing (DynB). Our investigation also reveals important research objectives for future IVC protocols, namely how much reactivity and situation-awareness is needed in the highly dynamic environment of vehicular networks. © 2014 IEEE.

Platooning, the idea of cars autonomously following their leaders to form a road train, has huge potentials to improve traffic flow efficiency and, most importantly, road traffic safety. Wireless communication is a fundamental building block - it is needed to manage and to maintain the platoons. To keep the system stable, strict constraints in terms of update frequency and reliability must be met. We developed communication strategies by explicitly taking into account the requirements of the controller, exploiting synchronized communication slots as well as transmit power adaptation. The proposed approaches are compared to two state of the art adaptive beaconing protocols that have been designed for generic message dissemination. Our simulation models have been parametrized and validated by means of real-world experiments. We clearly show how taking into account specific requirements can be extremely beneficial even in very crowded freeway scenarios. © 2014 IEEE.

Security-sensitive applications, such as patient health monitoring and credit card transactions, are increasingly utilizing wireless communication systems, RFIDs, wireless sensor networks, and other wireless communication systems. The use of interference-emitting jammers to protect these sensitive communications has been recently explored in the literature, and has shown high potential. In this paper we consider optimization problems relating to the temporal distributions of jammers’ activity, and the suitable coding regimes used for communication. Solving the joint problem optimally enables comprehensive security in space, at a low power consumption and low communication overhead. The joint optimization of jamming in space and time is driven by a new framework that uses the bit-error probability as a measure of communication quality. Under this framework, we show how to guarantee information-theoretic security within a geographic region, and with increased flexibility to tailor the coding regime to the problem’s geometry. We present efficient algorithms for different settings, and provide simulations for various scenarios using the bit-error probability functions. These simulations demonstrate the efficiency of the scheme. We believe that our scheme can lead to practical, economical and scalable solutions for providing another layer of protection of sensitive data, in cases where encryption schemes are limited or impractical. Cooperative driving in general and Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) or platooning in particular require blending control theory, communications and networking, as well as mechanics and physics. Given the lack of an integrated modeling framework and theory as well as the prohibitively high costs of using prototypes for what-if studies, simulation remains the fundamental instrument to evaluate entire cooperative driving systems. This work presents Plexe, an Open Source extension to Veins that offers researchers a simulation environment able to run experiments in realistic scenarios, taking into account physics and mechanics of the vehicles, communications and networking impairments, and Inter-Vehicle communication (IVC) protocol stacks. Plexe is easily extensible and already implements protocols to support platooning and cooperative driving applications and several state of the art cruise control models. We describe the structure of the simulator and the control algorithms that Plexe implements and provide two use cases which show the potential of our framework as a powerful research tool for cooperative driving systems. © 2014 IEEE.

A Bell test is a randomized trial that compares experimental observations against the philosophical worldview of local realism1, in which the properties of the physical world are independent of our observation of them and no signal travels faster than light. A Bell test requires spatially distributed entanglement, fast and high-efficiency detection and unpredictable measurement settings2,3. Although technology can satisfy the first two of these requirements4–7, the use of physical devices to choose settings in a Bell test involves making assumptions about the physics that one aims to test. Bell himself noted this weakness in using physical setting choices and argued that human ‘free will’ could be used rigorously to ensure unpredictability in Bell tests8. Here we report a set of local-realism tests using human choices, which avoids assumptions about predictability in physics. We recruited about 100,000 human participants to play an online video game that incentivizes fast, sustained input of unpredictable selections and illustrates Bell-test methodology9. The participants generated 97,347,490 binary choices, which were directed via a scalable web platform to 12 laboratories on five continents, where 13 experiments tested local realism using photons5,6, single atoms7, atomic ensembles10, and superconducting devices11. Over a 12-hour period on 30 November 2016, participants worldwide provided a sustained data flow of over 1,000 bits per second to the experiments, which used different human-generated data to choose each measurement setting. The observed correlations strongly contradict local realism and other realistic positions in bipartite and tripartite12 scenarios. Project outcomes include closing the ‘freedom-of-choice loophole’ (the possibility that the setting choices are influenced by ‘hidden variables’ to correlate with the particle properties13), the utilization of video-game methods14 for rapid collection of human generated randomness, and the use of network

In this work we propose a sliding mode controller for in-hand manipulation that repositions a tool in the robot's hand by using gravity and controlling the slippage of the tool. In our approach, the robot holds the tool with a pinch grasp and we model the system as a link attached to the gripper via a passive revolute joint with friction, i.e., the grasp only affords rotational motions of the tool around a given axis of rotation. The robot controls the slippage by varying the opening between the fingers in order to allow the tool to move to the desired angular position following a reference trajectory. We show experimentally how the proposed controller achieves convergence to the desired tool orientation under variations of the tool's inertial parameters.

The intensive use of social media through mobile devices has leveraged the development of digital diary applications that keep track of social events as well as geotagged multimedia content. In a large crowd where users with cultural diversity perform spatiotemporal activities, such geotagged multimedia content facilitates users' navigation through points of interest (POI) based on their preferences. This work presents a crowdsourced geo-spatial multimedia data aggregation tool that allows users to develop diary chapters relevant to forthcoming users' spatio-temporal activities. Our proposed solution provides users with the ability to add POIs through an authoring environment with multiple dimensions, such as spatio-temporal filters, multimedia categories, and event types. Specific application domains such as emergency situations, leisure trips, journalism, and tourism can take benefit of this technique. This authoring environment also visualizes geo-spatial multimedia content for collocated points of interest (CPOI) with moving users' timelines. We plan to integrate our proposed authoring environment as a proof of concept into our existing large-scale crowdsourcing environment that is envisioned to support millions of users during the Hajj 2015 event.

With the proliferation of mobile devices, ubiquitous connectivity is becoming more and more desirable. Enterprise Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) technologies provide such connectivity in several environments. In such deployments, configuration and management is done centrally using the vendor independent Control and Provisioning of Wireless Access Points (CAPWAP) protocol. However, the controllers provide little to no room for network programmability. In this paper, we propose a Software Defined Networking (SDN) framework for enterprise WLANs. This framework will provide network programmability allowing the network administrators to deploy customized applications for utilizing the WLANs. We also propose a seamless, client-unaware mobility mechanism which runs on the proposed framework.
