Crowdsourced multimedia data poses several challenges when it is collected, stored, indexed, retrieved, and visualized. Examples of crowd source multimedia data are social sensors, vehicle sensors, physical sensors, human sensors, etc. Analyzing such multimodal and diversified crowdsourced data provides very rich understanding about the need of individuals within a crowd. Such understanding makes it possible to tailor services to individuals' needs, also called context-aware services. In this paper, we propose a spatial multimedia big data framework that can collect multimedia data from 1) a very large crowd equipped with multi-sensory smartphones, 2) vehicles, and 3) social networks. A set of multimedia services are offered to users to support their spatio-temporal activities. These include but not limited to 1) simple user interfaces to utilize multimedia services for instant guidance, 2) navigation to points of interests (POI), and 3) efficient and cost effective intra-city rides to users. The big data framework is designed to handle a very large number of multimedia spatio-temporal queries in real-time. The system is a pilot project and will be deployed during the event of Hajj 2015 when over three million pilgrims from all over the world will visit Makkah, Saudi Arabia to perform their Hajj rituals.

Cooperative driving in general and Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) or platooning in particular require blending control theory, communications and networking, as well as mechanics and physics. Given the lack of an integrated modeling framework and theory as well as the prohibitively high costs of using prototypes for what-if studies, simulation remains the fundamental instrument to evaluate entire cooperative driving systems. This work presents Plexe, an Open Source extension to Veins that offers researchers a simulation environment able to run experiments in realistic scenarios, taking into account physics and mechanics of the vehicles, communications and networking impairments, and Inter-Vehicle communication (IVC) protocol stacks. Plexe is easily extensible and already implements protocols to support platooning and cooperative driving applications and several state of the art cruise control models. We describe the structure of the simulator and the control algorithms that Plexe implements and provide two use cases which show the potential of our framework as a powerful research tool for cooperative driving systems.

In this work we present the decision support of the EMBalance platform. EMBalance is a platform for the management of balance disorders in terms of diagnosis, treatment and evolution. The EMBalance platform aims to extend existing but generic and currently uncoupled balance modelling activities leading to a multi-scale and patient-specific balance model, which will be incorporated in a Decision Support System (DSS), towards the early diagnosis, prediction and the efficient treatment planning of balance disorders. The diagnosis part of the decision support system uses various data ranging from demographic characteristics to clinical examinations, auditory and vestibular tests. Currently we present some initial technical choices and indicative results of the decision support system for diagnosing balance disorders, based on data mining techniques and clinical guidelines.

Capturing users' spatio-temporal context by recognizing their interests, locations, history and activities, and thereafter providing context-aware services is a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a spatio-temporal zoning model that takes different context dimensions into account and try to recommend necessary services to users in a personalized way. First, we propose a generic zoning model with unrestricted set of contexts where both spatial and temporal dimensions are relaxed, followed by two semi-restricted zoning models in which either spatial or temporal dimension is relaxed, while the other one is restricted. Finally, we show the model requiring restricted spatio-temporal zoning that applies to the scenario where millions of users need to perform some activities that have to be performed in a certain location and at a certain temporal period. We use the above zoning model for Hajj and Umrah events to define pilgrim's spatio-temporal contexts by capturing their real-time and historic activities through their smartphones' sensory data. This allows to intelligently recommend a set of necessary services to the users. We present a few of the implementations introduced in our proposed system. © 2014 IEEE.

We consider the estimation of the position and transmit power of primary users in cognitive radio networks based on solving a sequence of ℓ 1 -regularized least-square problems, in which the unknown vector is sparse and the measurements are only sequentially available. We propose an online parallel algorithm that is novel in three aspects: i) all elements of the unknown vector variable are updated in parallel; ii) the update of each element has a closed-form expression; and iii) the stepsize is designed to accelerate the convergence yet it still has a closed-form expression. The convergence property is both theoretically analyzed and numerically consolidated.

Globally, electric energy systems are faced with great challenges due to the massive growth of electricity generated by renewable energy sources. The situation in Germany is even more pronounced because of the planned phase-out of nuclear energy. The high penetration of volatile decentralized renewables such as wind and solar energy contributes to a shift of the electric energy system. The present legally guaranteed priority over conventional power plants leads to a change of the characteristics of the residual load - defined as the difference between electricity demand and the amount supplied by renewables. In order to predict various system aspects with adequate accuracy, we developed a flexible, validated, and efficient simulation model. In this paper, we describe our model and apply it to investigate the properties of the residual load based on the electric energy system of the German federal state Bavaria. The simulation results show that the mean of the residual load will decline whereas the hours of negative residual load will increase over the next ten years. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper presents a new efficient numerical formulations procedure to predict the responses of a N-poles Chebyshev parallel-coupled Microstrip bandpass filter for wireless communication technologies. Based on the transmission line theory approach, these numerical formulations have been developed using the mathematical analysis concept to predict the desired s-parameters of the desired filter. To validate the theoretical method developed in this work, a third and a second order parallel coupled microstrip band pass filters for WiMAX and ISM band respectively have been fabricated and measured. The measured scattering-parameters show a very good agreement with predictions by the theoretical responses, which validates the design procedure of the proposed filter. © 2014 IEEE.

On the one hand this paper presents a theoretical method to predict the responses for the parallel coupled microstrip bandpass filters, and on the other hand proposes a new MATLAB simulation interface including all parameters design procedure to predict the filter responses. The main advantage of this developed interface calculator is to enable researchers and engineers to design and determine easily all parameters of the PCMBPF responses with high accuracy and very small CPU time. To validate the numerical method and the corresponding new interface calculator, two PCMBP filters for wireless communications are designed and compared with the commercial electromagnetic CST simulator and the fabricated prototype respectively. Measured results show good agreement with those obtained by numerical method and simulations. © 2014 IEEE.

We study the effect of radio signal shadowing dynamics, caused by vehicles and by buildings, on the performance of beaconing protocols in Inter-Vehicular communication (IVC). Recent research indicates that beaconing, i.e., one hop message broadcast, shows excellent characteristics and can outperform other communication approaches for both safety and efficiency applications, which require low latency and wide area information dissemination, respectively. We show how shadowing dynamics of moving obstacles hurt IVC, reducing the performance of beaconing protocols. At the same time, shadowing also limits the risk of overloading the wireless channel. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study identifying the problems and resulting possibilities of such dynamic radio shadowing. We demonstrate how these challenges and opportunities can be taken into account and outline a novel approach to dynamic beaconing. It provides low-latency communication (i.e., very short beaconing intervals), while ensuring not to overload the wireless channel. The presented simulation results substantiate our theoretical considerations. © 2013 IEEE.
