On the one hand this paper presents a theoretical method to predict the responses for the parallel coupled microstrip bandpass filters, and on the other hand proposes a new MATLAB simulation interface including all parameters design procedure to predict the filter responses. The main advantage of this developed interface calculator is to enable researchers and engineers to design and determine easily all parameters of the PCMBPF responses with high accuracy and very small CPU time. To validate the numerical method and the corresponding new interface calculator, two PCMBP filters for wireless communications are designed and compared with the commercial electromagnetic CST simulator and the fabricated prototype respectively. Measured results show good agreement with those obtained by numerical method and simulations.

In this paper, we propose a new algorithm, called ClaSP for mining frequent closed sequential patterns in temporal transaction data. Our algorithm uses several efficient search space pruning methods together with a vertical database layout. Experiments on both synthetic and real datasets show that ClaSP outperforms currently well known state of the art methods, such as CloSpan. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

This paper describes a research, experiments, and theoretical considerations leading towards automatic computational thesaurus construction based upon identification of synonyms in large sets of texts for the needs of question-answering (QA) systems. The method benefits from and is founded on Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) technique. LSA serves as a hypothesis generator which produces hypotheses about the words that might be synonyms. Subsequently, the generated hypotheses are proven right or wrong by means of examination of morphologic bindings between the two words and of the overall syntactic structure of the context in which they appear, namely the subject-object relation. The retrieved synonyms are used to extend the search space where a QA system mines the answers. © 2013 Springer-Verlag GmbH.

VoIP traffic over Mobile Ad-Hoc networks (MANETs) faces many interacting challenges such as the mobility of the nodes that leads to continuous link breakages, the restricted bandwidth availability, the different characteristics of the existing routing protocols, the used voice codecs, the number of the mobile nodes and the background traffic. These factors introduce variability in the latency and the packet loss rate, which in turn severely affects the voice quality that is closely related to the voice codecs used by the VoIP network. This paper examines the effects of these factors to the quality of the VoIP traffic over a MANET via extensive simulations. It also presents ways to improve the performance, based either on the routing layer or on the application layer with the aggregation of multiple voice payloads to a single packet. This aggregation significantly improves the performance of the G.711 codec, while the impact to the other codecs is negligible. © 2013 IEEE.

The idea of wirelessly connected vehicles has long ceased to be a vision as researchers from both academic and industrial institutions and field operational tests all over the world are contributing to bringing this technology to life. Both ETSI and IEEE have been working on respective standards (ETSI ITS G5 in Europe, IEEE WAVE in North America) to enable this new application of wireless communication. In this paper we compare medium access in these systems by means of an extensive simulation study while focusing on the transmission of periodic safety messages on the control channel. We observe that for different reasons high node density scenarios appear to be critical for the overall performance of both systems. This includes end-to-end delay, packet error rates and a non-optimal channel utilization that leaves room for improvement. We find that the approach proposed by ETSI ITS G5 with Decentralized Congestion Control (DCC) may access the channel rather conservatively but still outperforms IEEE WAVE in most of the scenarios.

We propose a context aware framework that offers a set of cloud-based services to support a very large Hajj and Umrah crowd by capturing their contexts using smartphones. The proposed framework captures the individual's context, provides a set of adapted services, and allows being in touch with a subset of one's community of interest. We leverage the spatiotemporal sensory data captured by our framework to define users' contexts for optimized services. Our proposed framework is also envisioned to assist the Hajj and Umrah authorities to (1) improve Hajj & Umrah documentation, (2) improve Hajj organization through better understanding of pilgrims' (individual and crowd) spatial and temporal behavior and needs, and (3) protect pilgrims' environment through environmental monitoring. In particular, the developed methods, techniques, and algorithms will support the pilgrimage quality of experience. We have tested our system through end-user subjects and due to apply for the upcoming Hajj events. We present our implementation details and the general impression of end users about our system.

Capturing users' spatio-temporal context by recognizing their interests, locations, history and activities, and thereafter providing context-aware services is a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a spatio-temporal zoning model that takes different context dimensions into account and try to recommend necessary services to users in a personalized way. First, we propose a generic zoning model with unrestricted set of contexts where both spatial and temporal dimensions are relaxed, followed by two semi-restricted zoning models in which either spatial or temporal dimension is relaxed, while the other one is restricted. Finally, we show the model requiring restricted spatio-temporal zoning that applies to the scenario where millions of users need to perform some activities that have to be performed in a certain location and at a certain temporal period. We use the above zoning model for Hajj and Umrah events to define pilgrim's spatio-temporal contexts by capturing their real-time and historic activities through their smartphones' sensory data. This allows to intelligently recommend a set of necessary services to the users. We present a few of the implementations introduced in our proposed system.

Braess's paradox states that removing a part of a network may improve the players' latency at equilibrium. In this work, we study the approximability of the best subnetwork problem for the class of random Gn,p instances proven prone to Braess's paradox by (Roughgarden and Valiant, RSA 2010) and (Chung and Young, WINE 2010). Our main contribution is a polynomial-time approximation-preserving reduction of the best subnetwork problem for such instances to the corresponding problem in a simplified network where all neighbors of s and t are directly connected by 0 latency edges. Building on this, we obtain an approximation scheme that for any constant Ε > 0 and with high probability, computes a subnetwork and an Ε-Nash flow with maximum latency at most (1 + Ε)L* + Ε, where L* is the equilibrium latency of the best subnetwork. Our approximation scheme runs in polynomial time if the random network has average degree O(poly(ln n)) and the traffic rate is O(poly(ln ln n)), and in quasipolynomial time for average degrees up to o(n) and traffic rates of O(poly(ln n)). © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Security and privacy requirements in vehicular networks are typically addressed using a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and pools of pseudonymous certificates for each vehicle. Messages are signed with these certificates, so that misbehaving vehicles can be excluded from the network by disseminating Certificate Revocation Lists (CRLs). We present SmartRevoc, a novel revocation architecture, to solve the main challenges of CRL distribution in vehicular networks: CRL size, dissemination speed, and preservation of location privacy. Using two hash chains, we compute CRLs on vehicles, substantially reducing communication overhead. At the same time our design is privacy preserving, preventing the linking of past pseudonyms to revoked ones. We additionally utilize parked vehicles to epidemically disseminate CRLs and show that even few parked vehicles can outperform an unreasonably high number of Roadside Units (RSUs). Our simulation results clearly indicate that SmartRevoc is a major step forward toward more efficient and secure vehicular networks.

We study the problem of spanner construction in wireless ad-hoc networks through power assignments under two spanner models-distance and energy. In particular, we are interested in asymmetric power assignments so that the induced communication graph holds good distance and energy stretch factors simultaneously. In addition, we consider the following optimization objectives: low total energy consumption, low interference level, low hopdiameter, and high network lifetime. Two node deployment scenarios are studied: random and deterministic. For n random nodes distributed uniformly and independently in a unit square, we present several power assignments with varying construction-time complexities. The results are based on various geometric properties of random points and shortest path tree constructions. Due to the probabilistic nature of this scenario, the probability of our results converges to one as the number of network nodes, n, increases. For the deterministic case, we present two power assignments with nontrivial bounds. These are established in addition to shortcut edges that satisfy desired threshold stretch. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first results for spanner construction in wireless ad-hoc networks with provable bounds for both energy and distance metrics simultaneously. Our power assignments, in addition, try optimizing additional network properties, such as network lifetime, interference, and hop diameter. © 2013 ACM.
