Classification of imbalanced data represents a challenging task in machine learning, as most classification algorithms tend to bias towards the majority class, while often correctly identifying minority class instances is of greater importance. Consequently, there is a need for methods that provide improved accuracy for the minority class without sacrificing overall performance. Ensemble classification methods have been shown to be able to lead to both more robust as well as better performing classification approaches, while more recently, ensemble approaches have also been developed for imbalanced classification problems. In this paper, we evaluate seven state-of-the-art ensemble approaches and, in an extensive set of experiments, compare their performance on five benchmark datasets. Our results should allow to shed some light on strengths and weaknesses of the investigated algorithms.

In wireless sensor networks, energy depletion of bottleneck nodes which have more data packets to relay than others, dominates the network lifetime referred to as the funnel effect problem. To overcome this problem, multiple sink methods have been proposed where sensor nodes send observed data packets toward several sinks to distribute traffic load of bottleneck nodes. If both of the topology and the traffic pattern are symmetric, bottleneck nodes are located near sinks. However, in a general sensor network with an asymmetric topology and/or an asymmetric traffic pattern, bottleneck nodes may exist any place in the network. In this paper, we propose DCAM (DispersiveCast of packets to Avoid bottleneck nodes for Multiple sink sensor network), which is a load balancing method to improve lifetime of a sensor network with an asymmetric topology and an asymmetric traffic pattern. DCAM first finds bottleneck nodes, and then balances the load on the bottleneck nodes. Selected nodes send data packets to several sinks dispersively according to some criteria. The criteria classify DCAM into three variations: DCAM with probability (DCAM-P), DCAM with moving boarder (DCAM-MB), and DCAM with round-robin (DCAM-RR). This paper gives details of the DCAM methods, and thereafter evaluates them with asymmetric topologies and asymmetric traffic patterns. To deal with these dynamic asymmetry, the topology is modeled by a grid network with virtual holes that are defined as vacant places of nodes in the network. Asymmetry of traffic pattern is modeled by defining a hot area where nodes have heavier data traffic than the others. The evaluations are conducted as changing hot-area traffic patterns as well as fixing hot-area patterns. The results show that DCAM improves network lifetime up to 1.87 times longer than the conventional schemes, (i.e., nearest sink transmissions and optimal dispersive cast of packet). This overview presents the framework and results for the Author Profiling task at PAN 2013. We describe in detail the corpus and its characteristics, and the evaluation framework we used to measure the participants performance to solve the problem of identifying age and gender from anonymous texts. Finally, the approaches of the 21 participants and their results are described.

One of the problems with the current practices in the various domains of facility management is that each facility is managed by its stake holder in isolation from the management of other similar facilities. However, with the advent of new technologies such as cloud computing, we have an opportunity to unify the management of multiple geographically dispersed facilities. To that end, this paper presents our joint research efforts on cloud-based smart facility management. More precisely, we present a cloud-based platform in order to manage sensor-based bridge infrastructures and smart machinery. Although the paper focuses on these two applications, the proposed cloud-based platform is designed to support/manage a multitude of smart facilities.

We study the effect of radio signal shadowing dynamics, caused by vehicles and by buildings, on the performance of beaconing protocols in Inter-Vehicular communication (IVC). Recent research indicates that beaconing, i.e., one hop message broadcast, shows excellent characteristics and can outperform other communication approaches for both safety and efficiency applications, which require low latency and wide area information dissemination, respectively. We show how shadowing dynamics of moving obstacles hurt IVC, reducing the performance of beaconing protocols. At the same time, shadowing also limits the risk of overloading the wireless channel. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study identifying the problems and resulting possibilities of such dynamic radio shadowing. We demonstrate how these challenges and opportunities can be taken into account and outline a novel approach to dynamic beaconing. It provides low-latency communication (i.e., very short beaconing intervals), while ensuring not to overload the wireless channel. The presented simulation results substantiate our theoretical considerations.

Is it possible to estimate some 'safety' metric to assess the effectiveness of Intelligent Transportation systems? In particular, we are interested in using Inter-Vehicle communication (IVC) beaconing for increasing drivers' safety at intersections. In the last couple of years, the vehicular networking community reported in several studies that simple network metrics are not sufficient to evaluate safety enhancing protocols and applications. We present a classification scheme that allows the quantification of such improvements by determining how many potential crashes happen or can be avoided by a specific IVC approach. Using a modified road traffic simulator that allowed selected vehicles to disregard traffic rules, we investigated the impact of safety messaging between cars approaching an intersection. We show that in suburban environments simple beaconing is not as effective as anticipated. Yet, simple one-hop-relaying, e.g., by vehicles parked close to an intersection, can improve drivers' safety substantially. Since the key purpose of IVC is safety, the paper closes the loop in the evaluation of the effectiveness of vehicular networks as defined today. © 2012 IEEE.

Broadcasting is considered one of the main challenges in Mobile Ad-hoc networks (MANETs). Therefore, several algorithms have been proposed, such as Self-Pruning (SP), Counter-Based (CB) and Dominant-Pruning (DP). However, they suffer from low packet delivery in some environments, such as the mobility scenario. This paper presents Reliable Neighbor-Based Broadcasting (RNBB), an efficient broadcast algorithm which can meet the broadcast requirements in MANETs. The design principle is to construct a hybrid scheme between SP and CB broadcast schemes aiming to combine the advantages of the both. To make the solution robust, new ideas such as adaptive broadcast delay and an eavesdropping mechanism are integrated to enable RNBB to mitigate the broadcast storm problem while ensuring highly reliable packet delivery. To evaluate RNBB, a comprehensive comparison with different developed algorithms has been made using ns-2. The experimental results demonstrate that RNBB provides robust performance across a wide range of environments. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

The impact of mouth-to-ear delay on Conversational Quality (CQ) has been subject to manyfold research in the field of telecommunications. However, its dependency on Conversational Interactivity (CI) has not been studied explicitly in a quantitative way. To investigate the impact of both delay and CI, we conducted 48 tests with 96 different participants and controlled the interactivity through different tasks, namely natural conversation (flight), proof reading of text (text), and random number verification (rnv). The control of interactivity is proven to be effective and remains stable for delays from 100 ms to 800 ms. The Speaker Alternation Rate (SAR) is used as the metric for interactivity. It is shown to have a significant impact on CQ after 200ms delay and the effect does not alleviate until 800 ms. The hypothesis is proven using both graphical analysis and statistical evaluation based on a linear model and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). © 2012 University of Split.

The increased and widespread usage of digital multimedia has aroused great concerns regarding issues such as copyright protection, copy control and proof of ownership. Digital watermarking serves as a solution to these kinds of problems;however, digital watermarking techniques have demonstrated to possess vulnerabilities. Thus opening avenues for malicious attackers to abuse these security breaches. Therefore, maintaining the security of digital watermarked media i.e. text, image, audio and video has received considerable attention. This paper has conducted a comprehensive research with special emphasis on the classification of malicious attacks against digital watermarking. Subsequently, it reviews the current countermeasures available to mitigate the intentional attacks. In addition, it procures a foundation for the evaluation of various watermarking algorithms. © 2012 IEEE.
