We consider an anchor-free, relative localization and synchronization problem where a set of n receiver nodes and m wireless signal sources are independently, uniformly, and randomly distributed in a disk in the plane. The signals can be distinguished and their capture times can be measured. At the beginning neither the positions of the signal sources and receivers are known nor the sending moments of the signals. Now each receiver captures each signal after its constant speed journey over the unknown distance between signal source and receiver position. Given these nm capture times the task is to compute the relative distances between all synchronized receivers. In a more generalized setting the receiver nodes have no synchronized clocks and need to be synchronized from the capture times of the stolen signals. © 2011 Authors.

The world of software analysis, design and development has dramatically changed, owing to the availability of novel patterns and architectures derived from the Internet experience. In particular, the Jazz framework joined to the Eclipse Integrated Development Environment enables programmers working in a collaborative environment, by means of cooperation strategies. This gave birth to the idea of launching an experimental project for the teaching of software engineering disciplines in a collaborative environment. To this aim, students from different Universities are encouraged to conduct software development projects together, exploring new opportunities for intra-university collaboration, and promoting the sharing of knowledge and expertise gained during the projects. This paper reports on the state of the art of the OTRE project. In more details, OTRE stands for On The Road to Eclipse, and its ambition is developing a full featured software environment for managing the annual conference of the Italian Eclipse Community. The vision, management, achievements and future development of the project will be addressed in this work.

Carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation is a challenging task in Wi-MAX uplink as it uses orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) which demands extremely accurate frequency synchronization. Here each user may experience a different CFO relative to the base station reference carrier and the estimation of them turn out to be a multiple parameter estimation problem. In this paper, we propose a null subcarrier based particle swam optimization (PSO) technique that performs the estimation by minimizing a cost function. As compared to the null subcarrier based grid search algorithm available in the literature, the computational complexity of the proposed technique is very low. The mean square error of the CFO estimator and bit error rate performance of the Wi-MAX base station receiver that employs the proposed estimation method are studied through computer simulations. It has been shown that the proposed technique achieves a better performance than the grid search algorithm at low to medium signal to noise ratio (SNR) where the algorithm reliability really matters. © 2011 IEEE.

Mobile pervasive healthcare technologies can support a wide range of applications and services including patient monitoring and emergency response. At the same time they introduce several challenges, like data storage and management, interoperability and availability of heterogeneous resources, unified and ubiquitous access issues. One potential solution for addressing all aforementioned issues is the introduction of the Cloud Computing concept. Within this context, in this work we have developed and present a wearable - textile platform based on open hardware and software that collects motion and heartbeat data and stores them wirelessly on an open Cloud infrastructure for monitoring and further processing. The proposed system may be used to promote the independent living of patient and elderly requiring constant surveillance. © 2011 IEEE.

Reducing our power consumption is an urgent issue which has important economical and ecological benefits. By using femtocell technology the mobile network can become far more energy efficient than it is today. In this paper, we describe what femtocell technology is and introduce outdoor femtocell distribution strategies that can save the network power. We also compare the usage of typical short-range base stations in place of femtocells and show that femtocells are more efficient. The results of the introduced strategies show that significant power savings of up to 92% can be achieved on a per-macrocell basis if implemented. © 2011 University of Split.

This paper presents a new speed controller based on the theory of adaptive fuzzy inference system based on neural (ANFIS) for a direct torque to twelve sectors controlled of the induction motor. The proposed controller integrates fuzzy logic algorithm with a structure of artificial neural network (ANN) five-layer in order to reap the benefits of both methods, the learning abilities of the first and readability and flexibility of the second. The controller replaces the conventional PI is the rule fuzzy inference system with the hybrid learning algorithm. This makes learning the fuzzy system. The performance of the proposed neuro-fuzzy control for induction motor speed was studied at different operating conditions. The simulation study shows the robustness and relevance of control for applications in high performance driving. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper studies the problem of data gathering in hierarchical wireless ad hoc networks. In this scenario, a set of wireless devices generates messages which are addressed to the base station. As not all nodes can reach the base station through a direct transmission, messages are relayed by other devices in a multi-hop fashion. We consider data gathering without aggregation, i.e. all the generated messages are required to reach the base station - this is in contrast to the well studied problem of data gathering with aggregation, which appears to be significantly simpler. The above scheme may have poor performance in wireless networks with hierarchical architecture. The devices in the layer closest to the base station form a bottleneck in terms of energy consumption as they experience a very high volume of forward requests. Eventually, these nodes will be the first to run out of their battery charges which will cause connectivity losses. In this paper we focus on prolonging the network lifetime of hierarchical networks through efficient balancing of forward requests, which is NP-hard. We develop an approximation scheme which produces a data gathering tree with network lifetime which is at most k times less than the optimal one, where k is the number of hierarchical layers. Our results are analytically proved and validated through simulations. © 2011 ACM.

Following the European initiatives like European Qualification Framework (EQF), Europass [4] and European Learner Mobility [3], the aim of this paper is to introduce specifications, services and applications that enable the management and use of learning outcome information. We present pilot implementation and validation of the adoption of standards and specifications related to outcome based learning. Prototypes are developed as widgets and modules of Learning Management systems (LMS) like Moodle, to produce and import data about intended learning outcomes of learning opportunities and achieved learning outcomes of learners. We demonstrate an outcome based Engineering Education use case. © 2011 IEEE.

Although Internet on the train and train to wayside communication in general becomes more and more available for train operators, there are still a lot of challenges for future research. We previously developed a network platform that is responsible for an uninterrupted and seamless connectivity from the train to the wayside through heterogeneous wireless access technologies. This paper mainly focuses on the concept for providing sufficient Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees in a dynamic train environment. Within this network platform, IPv6 strategies are adopted for QoS, exploiting multi-homing and intelligent aggregation techniques. The implementation that has been done in the Click Modular Router programming environment will also be presented in details. © 2011 IEEE.

Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) face several challenges such as architectural design and network protocol design issues. The capacity of WMNs is very limited, such as the result in an available singlechannel bandwidth system compared to a multi-channel system. Two problems affect the capacity of mesh networks;i.e. load balancing and interference. To support the mesh network infrastructure, it is necessary to balance the traffic load and reduce the interference. One important direction for improving the capacity of WMNs is to use multiple radio interfaces and multiple channels simultaneously. The proposed load balancing routing algorithm method provides the load balance for multi-radio mesh networks by using a good routing metric,which captures the differences in transmission rates, packet loss ratio, traffic load and intra/inter flow interferences. The simulation results of this study, which used the network simulation NS-2, showed the capacity improvement that helps distributing the traffic load for efficient resource utilization.
