In this paper, we propose an approach for improving direct torque control (DTC) of induction machines based on the theory of fuzzy logic that replaces the conventional comparators and the selection table, to reduce the torque ripples electromagnetic flux and the stator current. Then we present a speed estimator, based on the algorithm of the extended Kalman filter (EKF). The function of filtering consists to estimate the useful information which is polluted by a noise. The extended Kalman filter (EKF) aims to estimate optimally the state of linear system: this state corresponds to useful information. Before defining the optimality factors that will calculate the Kalman filter, which is in fact a stochastic criterion.. The validity of the proposed methods is confirmed by the simulation results.

The aviation community is currently working on the standardization of data communication systems for the future air traffic management. In this context, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has initiated a work on standardization of an IPv6-based aeronautical telecommunications network and on future radio access technologies, respectively. In this paper, we integrate L-Band Digital Aeronautical communications System Option 1 (L-DACS 1), which is one candidate for future radio access technologies, with realistic IPv6-based network layer functionality and analyze Deficit Round Robin (DRR) with fragmentation algorithm for the forward and return link in L-DACS 1. Our analysis mainly covers two application domains: file transfer and real-time services. We show that DRR with fragmentation scheduler provides good performance results in terms of throughput, delay, and bandwidth fairness.

The eighth international workshop on Quality in Database was held in Singapore, on September 13th, 2010 and co-located with the 36th Conference on Very Large DataBase (VLDB). The main objective of the workshop was to address the challenge to detect data anomalies and assess, monitor, improve, and maintain the quality of information. The keynote speech, titled 'SOLOMON: Seeking the Truth Via Copying Detection' was delivered by Xin Luna Dong, AT&T. The author presented the SOLOMON tool that supports the discovery of copying relationships between structured data source to improve data integration features. The goal of 'Deriving Effectiveness Measures for Data Quality Rules' by Lei Jiang, Alex Borgida, Daniele Barone, John Mylopoulos is the evaluation of data quality rules. Peter Yeh, and Colin Puri show in 'Discovering Conditional Functional Dependencies to Detect Data Inconsistencies' an approach that exploits conditional functional dependencies for detecting inconsistencies in data and hence improves data quality.

Public acceptance, and thus the economical success of Vehicular Ad Hoc networks (VANETs), is highly dependent on the quality of deployed privacy mechanisms. Neither users nor operators should be able to track a given individual. One approach to facilitate this is the usage of pseudonym pools, which allow vehicles to autonomously switch between different identities. We extend this scheme with that of a time-slotted pseudonym pool of static size, reducing the storage and computation needs of the envisioned Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) while further improving users' privacy. In addition, we allow the exchange of pseudonyms between nodes, eliminating the mapping between vehicles and pseudonyms even for operators of the VANET. Here, we support the exchange of both the currently used pseudonym and those of future time-slots, further enhancing users' privacy. We evaluate the feasibility of our approach and back up privacy claims by performing a simulative study of the system using the entropy of nodes' anonymity sets as the primary metric. © 2010 IEEE.

We present Adaptive Traffic Beacon (ATB), a fully-decentralized car-to-X protocol built around the central ideas of delay sensitivity and congestion awareness. From previous research findings, we see that centralized solutions, VANETs, and broadcasting based approaches each show benefits and drawbacks depending on traffic density, penetration, network utilization, and other parameters;intelligent transportation systems are therefore tuned for specific settings. In order to overcome this limitation, we developed a broadcast-based solution that has been designed to carefully use only the remaining capacity of the wireless channel. Thus, it will not influence other applications using the same radio network. ATB is adaptive in two dimensions: First, the beacon interval is adapted dynamically according to the channel quality and the importance of messages in the local knowledge base, and, secondly, the protocol can dynamically make use of available infrastructure elements. Simulation experiments demonstrate that ATB performs well in a broad range of settings. It maintains a non-congested wireless channel to prevent collisions during the data exchange. © 2010 IEEE.

Passive monitoring utilizing distributed wireless sniffers is an effective technique to monitor activities in wireless infrastructure networks for fault diagnosis, resource management and critical path analysis. In this paper, we introduce a quality of monitoring (QoM) metric defined by the expected number of active users monitored, and investigate the problem of maximizing QoM by judiciously assigning sniffers to channels based on knowledge of user activities in a multi-channel wireless network. Two capture models are considered. The first one, called the user-centric model assumes frame-level capturing capability of sniffers such that the activities of different users can be distinguished. The second one, called the sniffer-centric model only utilizes binary channel information (active or not) at a sniffer. For the user-centric model, we show that the implied optimization problem is NP-hard, but a constant approximation ratio can be attained via polynomial complexity algorithms. For the sniffer-centric model, we devise a stochastic inference scheme that transforms the problem into the user-centric domain, where we are able to apply our polynomial approximation algorithms. The effectiveness of our proposed scheme and algorithms is further evaluated using both synthetic data as well as real-world traces from an operational WLAN. Copyright 2010 ACM.

Passwords are no longer valid for accessing personal resources, because it is easy to forge them, in either small or big systems. Today's challenge is to find other alternatives for passwords. Biometric is one of the ways, by mean of using human characteristics in accessing system resources. Fingerprint and face can be used to secure systems, because fingerprint is a unique, un-repeatable. Using it with face it can be widely acceptable. This paper present a model of fingerprint and face recognition to gain access to sensitive information for only authorized person. The method is based on recognition of the concatenated fingerprint and face images known as fingerface. A small size of fingerface images are used to extract information. Area under the curve resulted from connecting highest peaks are used in matching parameter. Other parameters are used to ensure a perfect matching. Our method takes into account a minimum image size and minimum number of searches. As a result we get fast in matching process. © 2010 IEEE.

Planning new railway infrastructures is a complex process. We present an approach where the formalization of expert knowledge regarding the railway domain is motivated in order to improve the planning process. By applying ontologies as a representation of railway related knowledge we are able to make the coherencies of infrastructural elements explicit. Furthermore the integration of an ontology-based rule language provides the possibility of a semi-automated integrity verification of static infrastructure and safety components. Semantical inconsistencies potentially leading to unsafe conditions regarding train operations can be spotted within this verification process. This combination of conceptualization and correlation rules tends to be applicable for the creation of a formal and consistent model of specific railway infrastructures which are to be planned.

Mobile learning is considered the next step of online learning by incorporating mobility as a key requirement. Indeed, the current wide spread of mobile devices and wireless technologies brings an enormous potential to e-learning, in terms of ubiquity, pervasiveness, personalization, flexibility, and so on. For this reason, Mobile Learning is attracting significant research efforts covering a fairly variety of learning settings, from schools and universities to workplaces and cities. This research has evidenced that mobile technology can offer new opportunities for learners to learn inside and beyond the traditional instructor-oriented educational paradigm. However, mobile technologies are still in its infancy and many challenges arise. In this paper we analyze, from both learning and technological perspectives, the development of learning applications using mobile devices. To this end, proxy and proxy less architectures are considered as way to extend traditional virtual campuses with mobile clients. The objective is twofold: to access learning materials and to support learning activities. A prototype of a Virtual Campus is developed using MLE-Moodle -the Mobile Learning module of Moodle. The proposed Virtual Campus enables mobile clients to perform online learning activities and is a step towards achieving the 'anytime, anywhere' paradigm. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper we consider a set of n mobile wireless nodes, which have no information about each other. The only information a single node holds is its current location and future mobility plan. We develop a two-phase distributed self-stabilizing scheme for producing a bounded hop-diameter communication graph. The first phase is dedicated to the construction of an underlying topology for the dissemination of data needed for the second phase. In the second phase the required topology is constructed by means of an asymmetric power assignment under two modes - static and dynamic. The former aims to provide a steady topology for some time interval, while the latter uses the constant node locations changes to produce a constantly changing topology, which succeeds to preserve the required property of the bounded hop-diameter. For the static mode we provide an O(λ,λ2)-bicriteria approximation algorithm so that given a parameter 1 ≤ λ ≤ n-1, we construct a power assignment which induces a static h-bounded hop communication graph, h=n/λ+logλ, with a cost of at most λ times the optimum and network lifetime of at least 1/λ2 times the optimum. For the dynamic mode, given a parameter 1 ≤ h ≤ n-1 we construct an optimal power assignment (in terms of network lifetime) which induces a dynamic h-bounded hop communication graph.
