The adoption of the peer-to-peer (p2p) communication paradigm to enhance e-learning applications has been already proposed. However, advancements both in the knowledge society and p2p applications, allow to further push such joint utilization. The contribution of this paper is to survey the exploitation of p2p technologies within e-learning environments, as well as to investigate the open issues to bring distributed platforms to the next step. In addition, this work also introduces a general framework, based on BitTorrent, to support the delivery of Learning Objects. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper studies the problem of topology control in random wireless ad-hoc networks through power assignment for n nodes uniformly distributed in a unit square. In particular, we are interested in asymmetric power assignments so that the induced communication graph has a good distance and energy stretch simultaneously, with additional optimization objectives: both minimizing the total energy consumption, interference level, hop-diameter, and maximizing the network lifetime. We present several power assignments with varying construction time complexity. The probability of our results converges to one as the number of network nodes, n, increases. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first results for spanner construction in wireless ad-hoc networks with provable bounds for both, energy and distance, metrics simultaneously. ©2010 IEEE.

In many applications the traffic traversing the network has inter-packet dependencies due to application-level encoding schemes. For some applications, e.g., multimedia streaming, dropping a single packet may render useless the delivery of a whole sequence. In such environments, the algorithm used to decide which packet to drop in case of buffer overflows must be carefully designed, to avoid goodput degradation. We present a model that captures such inter-packet dependencies, and design algorithms for performing packet discards. Traffic consists of an aggregation of multiple streams, each of which consists of a sequence of inter-dependent packets. We provide two guidelines for designing buffer management algorithms for this problem, and demonstrate the effectiveness of these criteria. We devise an algorithm according to these guidelines and evaluate its performance analytically, using competitive analysis. We also present a simulation study that shows that the performance of our algorithm is within a small fraction of the performance of the best offline algorithm. ©2010 IEEE.

This paper puts forward an optimization in routing processing for wireless sensor networks. The sensor node in such network is a battery-operated sensing device. These nodes are placed in space with a consideration to a base station that centralizes and consolidates the data transmitted or forwarded by sensor nodes. When optimizing the management of a Wireless Sensor Network, we have to take care of the consumption of energy that takes place while sensor nodes are running the routing process to send or relay a message to neighbors or to a Base Station. In this paper, we put forward a study of sensors' behavior by modeling and implementing a controller with Coloured Petri Network in order to ensure the reduction of energy consumption in some sensor networks in which each node can be activated or suspended as need be. The controller must deal with activation and suspension to apply a reconfiguring policy to nodes depending on an energy supply level in every sensor in order to obtain the lowest level possible of energy consumption and maintain the same service quality consisting in total coverage of the region to survey and the connection of active nodes to the functional network. The evaluation of our presented model is made by CPN-Tools. © 2010 IEEE.

Installation of video collection devices (CCTV) that can be used to determine the road situation in real time has been expanded recently. This trend reflects the fact that image information is preferred by the road operators and users due to characteristics like immediacy, accuracy, conciseness and visibility. Since the CCTV system that is being operated at the present by the Traffic Information Center is run by operators, however, difficulty in operation will increase as the number of CCTV systems increases. When an accident like an incident occurs, rapid response will be difficult because verification will be late. Since there is functional demand for environmental information like direction information, location information and environment information that are difficult to determine with just image information, text information is displayed simultaneously with the image information. The goal of this paper is to improve service by transferring the passing pattern conveniently in video and images by adding functions which allow vehicle flow to be determined. The improvement method that is being proposed has the advantage of making it possible for the real time traffic information to be understood together with image information. This is accomplished by processing the CCTV image data so that it can be displayed together with the traffic data after analyzing and processing the traffic information that is entered so that traffic data that is collected at the corresponding point is displayed through the CCTV monitor when real time situation of the road is observed through the CCTV system. In addition, there is the advantage that an operator can understand the traffic situation quickly since traffic speed information that is difficult to determine from the CCTV monitor screen is converted to numerical values and displayed on the CCTV screen. Acquisition of pervasive sensor data can be often unsuccessful due to power outage at nodes, time synchronization issues, interference, network transmission failures or sensor hardware issues. Such failures can lead to inadequate data delivery to the monitoring applications resulting in erroneous conclusions. This paper presents a missing values substitution framework that addresses the aforementioned issue. Mobile learning is considered the next step of online learning by incorporating mobility as a key requirement. Indeed, the current wide spread of mobile devices and wireless technologies brings an enormous potential to e-learning, in terms of ubiquity, pervasiveness, personalization, flexibility, and so on. For this reason, Mobile Learning is attracting significant research efforts covering a fairly variety of learning settings, from schools and universities to workplaces and cities. This research has evidenced that mobile technology can offer new opportunities for learners to learn inside and beyond the traditional instructor-oriented educational paradigm. However, mobile technologies are still in its infancy and many challenges arise. In this paper we analyze, from both learning and technological perspectives, the development of learning applications using mobile devices. To this end, proxy and proxy less architectures are considered as way to extend traditional virtual campuses with mobile clients. The objective is twofold: to access learning materials and to support learning activities. A prototype of a Virtual Campus is developed using MLE-Moodle -the Mobile Learning module of Moodle. The proposed Virtual Campus enables mobile clients to perform online learning activities and is a step towards achieving the “anytime, anywhere” paradigm.

In this paper, a method for hand posture recognition, which is robust for hand posture changing in an actual environment, is proposed. Conventionally, a data glove device and a 3D scanner have been used for the feature extraction of hand shape. However, the performance of each approach is affeected by hand posture changing. Therefore, this paper proposes the posture fluctuation model for efficient hand posture recognition, based on 3D hand shape and color feature obtained from a stereo camera. A large set of dictionary for posture recognition is built by various leaned hand images which were auto-created from one scanned hand image, based on plural proposed models. In order to show the effectiveness of proposed method, performance and processing times for posture recognition are compared to conventional method. In addition, we perform the evaluation experiment by using the Japanese sign language. © 2010 IEEE.

Data mining algorithms have been proved to be useful for the processing of large data sets in order to extract relevant information and knowledge. Such algorithms are also important for analyzing data collected from the users' activity users. One family of such data analysis is that of mining of log files of online applications that register the actions of online users during long periods of time. A relevant objective in this case is to study the behavior of online users and feedback the design processes of online applications to provide better usability and adaption to users' preferences. The context of this work is that of a virtual campus in which thousands of students and tutors carry out the learning and teaching activity using online applications. The information stored in log files of virtual campuses tend to be large, complex and heterogeneous in nature. Hence, their mining requires both efficient and intelligent processing and analysis of user interaction data during long-term learning activities. In this paper, we present a bi-clustering algorithm for processing large log data sets from the online daily activity of students in a real virtual campus. Our approach is useful to extract relevant knowledge about user activity such as navigation patterns, activities performed as well as to study time parameters related to such activities. The extracted information can be useful not only to students and tutors to stimulate and improve their experience when interacting with the system but also to the designers and developers of the virtual campus in order to better support the online teaching and learning.

In this study, we design and present the novel wearable system with the interactive posture caption and recognition functions based on the non-vision over the ZigBee wireless sensor network (ZigBee-WSN). There are two type sensors, 3-axis accelerometer and clip type, to be employed in our wearable system. These sensors are arranged on user's four limbs such that the posture information can be gathered by them. Then, the posture information is transmitted to the data-controlling center over ZigBee-WSN. Finally, this center can analyze and distinguish various postures by our proposed algorithm through the friend user's interface to express. Our presented wearable system can distinguish out 28 kinds of hand postures and 13 kinds of leg postures altogether. Moreover, under our presented ZigBee-WSN system with small size, low-power consumption, and high-reliability characteristics, the data-controlling center can simultaneously tele-monitor the real-time body interactive postures of 8 persons, when the transmitting distance is less than 18 M and the package correct transmitted rate is more than 97.5%.
