We present an approach for analysing and improving fault-tolerance aspects in radio architectures. This is a necessary step to be taken in order to implement reliable radio systems in future nanoscale technologies. We present problem formulation, optimisation approach and implementation methodology. We are adding fault tolerance at architecture level by taking advantage of existing parallel structures and using a spare module approach in order to minimise hardware overhead needed. These issues have been analysed and demonstrated using two radio case studies: a UMTS MIMO and a GSM diversity receivers.

One of the great challenges to be faced in order to enable the success of future Web-based applications is to find effective ways to handle with the interoperability demands. In this context, Service-Oriented Architectures and Web Services technology are being considered as the most affordable solution to promote interoperability, by applying strategies like Service Composition. Nevertheless, most composition approaches applied nowadays in real world contexts lack dynamism. In fact, there is not yet a consensus regarding what would really be a dynamic composition. In this paper we propose some criteria to identify the levels of dynamism and automatization in service compositions. Furthermore, taking into account a model driven approach, we propose a strategy where different techniques can be used to make compositions more dynamic and automatic. This strategy is then exemplified and discussed considering an e-Government composition scenario.

In this paper we present the preliminary results of an ongoing research that aims at supporting ecosystem management in the study of forest systems according to a distributed modeling and simulation approach. The Cellular Automata For Forest Ecosystems (CAFFE) project is an interdisciplinary research involving computer scientists of the Department of computerscience, systems and communication of the University of Milano-Bicocca and urban planners, biologists and ecosystem managers of the System Research Department of Austrian Research Center (ARC). In particular, we focus here on the part of CAFFE project that concerns the design of a method to support the analysis step of simulations of forests according to a distributed approach (such as those based on Cellular Automata or Situated Multi-Agent systems). To this aim an innovative analysis method inspired by the Chinese Go game is under design. The originality of the approach concerns the detection within system configurations of known patterns whose interpretations are well-known by expert Go players. In this paper, after a brief presentation of the CA-based model of forests, we focus first on the set of Go patterns that we currently studied, then we present some preliminary results on experiments we conducted to validate the proposed approach to spatial patterns interpretation.

The growing use of digital signal processors (DSPs) in embedded systems necessitates the use of optimizing compilers supporting their special architecture features. Beside the irregular DSP architectures for reducing chip size and energy consumption, single instruction multiple data (SIMD) functionality is frequently integrated with the intention of performance improvement. In order to get an energy-efficient system consisting of processor and compiler, it is necessary to optimize hardware as well as software. It is not obvious that SIMD operations can save any energy: if n operations are executed in parallel, each of them might consume the same amount of energy as if there were executed sequentially. Up to now, no work has been done to investigate the influence of compiler generated code containing SIMD operations w.r.t. the energy consumption. This paper deals with the exploration of the energy saving potential of SIMD operations for a DSP by using a generic compilation framework including an integrated instruction level energy cost model for our target architecture. Effects of SIMD operations on the energy consumption are shown for several benchmarks and an MP3 application'.

A key element of generalized network access is the convergence of different services within one system. Future devices and applications will integrate professional quality real time voice and video traffic with packetized data. This will replace the current solution, where in-house wireless networks have two parallel infrastructures: the telephony infrastructure providing low-bandwidth but high quality of service, and the computer network for high data-rate but best-effort bursty traffic. In this paper, we present a novel approach to merge both wireless networks by integrating professional quality telephony into WLANs to get high quality "voice over WLAN". This will lead to an innovative application in the field of wireless and mobile communications. The approach is to merge the upper layers of the DECT protocol stack with a current WLAN physical layer and MAC layer technology, using a protocol adaptation layer (PAL).
