Antennas and rectennas for self-powered body area networks (BANs) have attracted significant interest, in an effort to improve the sustainability of e-textiles. This paper presents a novel dual-port fully-textile antenna, based on a simple microstrip patch, for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) at 2.4 GHz, presenting the first antenna-rectifier co-design implementation for SWIPT. The proposed antenna's input bandwidth covers the license-free band achieving 8.9 dBi measured directivity and 41% efficiency at 2.4 GHz, with a simple proximity-coupled microstrip feed. For power harvesting, port 2 is designed to achieve a scalable complex impedance to directly match the rectifier without a separate matching network, and achieves 6.3 dBi off-body gain. The proposed rectenna feed improves the antenna's isolation by at least 15 dB compared to a microstrip feed similar to port 1. The rectenna achieves over 40% power conversion efficiency (PCE) from -10 dBm, when placed directly on-body, with a 71% peak PCE.

For many cyber-physical systems, e.g., IoT systems and autonomous vehicles, offloading workload to auxiliary processing units has become crucial. However, since this approach highly depends on network connectivity and responsiveness, typically only non-critical tasks are offloaded, which have less strict timing requirements than critical tasks. In this work, we provide two protocols allowing to offload critical and non-critical tasks likewise, while providing different service levels for non-critical tasks in the event of an unsuccessful offloading operation, depending on the respective system requirements. We analyze the worst-case timing behavior of the local cyber-physical system and, based on these analyses, we provide a sufficient schedulability test for each of the proposed protocols. In the course of comprehensive experiments, we show that our protocols have reasonable acceptance ratios under the provided schedulability tests. Owing to the mobility of a wearable antenna and the unpredictable body-centric communications environment, dual-polarization antennas are essential for both communications and energy harvesting. This paper presents a dual-polarized four-port textile antenna/rectenna for wearable simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) applications. The proposed antenna utilizes dual ports for both off-body communication and energy harvesting from horizontal and vertical polarizations. The antenna maintains a 100 MHz bandwidth with an S11 under −10 dB around 2.4 GHz in the presence and absence of the human body, and at least 10 dB small-signal and large-signal isolation between all ports. The antenna maintains a 70–88% measured total efficiency and 8.4–9.6 dBi gain for various on-phantom positions across both communication ports. The measured mutual coupling is under −10 dB between co-polarized rectenna/antenna ports, and under −16 dB between orthogonally-polarized ports. A high RF to DC peak power conversion efficiency of over 70% (±5 %) is achieved with a broadside harvesting pattern. Based on the proposed antenna’s performance, SWIPT microstrip antennas can be adopted for both full-duplex and MIMO applications, significantly reducing the complexity of future battery-free networks for both wearable and non-wearable applications. © 2021, CC BY.

Millimeter wave power transmission for compact and large-area wearable IoT devices based on a higher-order mode wearable antenna

Owing to the shorter wavelength in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) spectrum, miniaturized antennas can receive power with a higher efficiency than UHF bands, promising sustainable mmWave-powered Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Nevertheless, the performance of a mmWave power receiver has not been compared, numerically or experimentally, to its sub-6 GHz counterpart. In this paper, the performance of mmWave-powered receivers is evaluated based on a novel wearable textile-based higher-order mode microstrip antenna, showing the benefits of wireless power transmission (WPT). Firstly, a broadband antenna is proposed maintaining a stable wearable measured bandwidth from 24.9 to 31.1 GHz, over three-fold improvement compared to a conventional patch. The proposed antenna has a measured 8.2 dBi co-polarized gain with the highest thickness-normalized efficiency of a wearable antenna. When evaluated for compact power receivers, the measured path gain shows that WPT at 26 GHz outperforms 2.4 GHz by 11 dB. A rectenna array based on the proposed antenna is then evaluated analytically showing the potential for up to 6.3× higher power reception compared to a UHF patch, based on the proposed antenna’s gain and an empirical path-loss model. Businesses were moving during the past decades to-ward full digital models, which made companies face new threats and cyberattacks affecting their services and, consequently, their profits. To avoid negative impacts, companies' investments in cybersecurity are increasing considerably. However, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) operate on small budgets, minimal technical expertise, and few personnel to address cybersecurity threats. In order to address such challenges, it is essential to promote novel approaches that can intuitively present cybersecurity-related technical *** paper introduces SecBot, a cybersecurity-driven conversational agent (i.e., chatbot) for the support of cybersecurity planning and management. SecBot applies concepts of neural networks and Natural Language Processing (NLP), to interact and extract information from a conversation. SecBot can (a) identify cyberattacks based on related symptoms, (b) indicate solutions and configurations according to business demands, and (c) provide insightful information for the decision on cybersecurity investments and risks. A formal description had been developed to describe states, transitions, a language, and a Proof-of-Concept (PoC) implementation. A case study and a performance evaluation were conducted to provide evidence of the proposed solution's feasibility and accuracy.

Evaluations of Internet of Things (IoT) and Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) applications demonstrate the significant and still existing gap between examinations with generic simulation environments and real-life (e.g., field test) or controlled (e.g., testbed) sensor network deployments in terms of realistic and accurate results. The separated use of single examination approaches is often not enough to overcome all evaluation challenges. We therefore propose a combination of discrete-event simulation, radio-channel emulation, and real hardware working together on different layers of the protocol stack of the system-under-test. Our combined approach reduces the gap between abstract simulations and network testbed experiments by providing adjustable radio conditions for repeatable evaluations of WSN and IoT networks. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2018.

Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) decouples the network package performed by network functions from dedicated hardware appliance by running Virtual Network Functions (VNF) on commercial off-the-shelf hardware. Network operators can create customized network services by chaining multiple VNFs, defining a so-called Service Function Chaining (SFC). Because NFV became technically mature recently, the building of such SFCs still needs in-depth knowledge about NFV technology and its descriptors. Furthermore, there is a lack of tools that help to simplify the creation of SFCs. This paper, introduces GENEVIZ, a tool that provides a user-friendly interface for the creation of new SFCs as well as for importing and adjusting acquired SFCs (e.g., from marketplaces of VNFs), in order to create new SFCs based on existing ones. Therefore, this work addresses as well data integrity and provides the functionality to store and validate SFCs through the use of blockchains. Three case studies are presented to provide evidence of the technical feasibility of the solution proposed. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

Cooperative localization has emerged as a promising technique which can complement or even replace global positioning systems (GPS) in many practical scenarios, such as GPS-denied environments. In this paper, we concentrate on the distributed cooperative localization design. The conventional distributed cooperative localization approaches usually yield high computational complexity and communication overhead, due to the lack of an efficient link selection mechanism. For this purpose, we propose a novel concept named opportunistic cooperative localization, based on which each agent is able to select the most informative links rather than utilize all the possible links in a distributed, self-organized, and self-optimized manner. To achieve effective opportunistic selection, overlapping coalition formation (OCF) game is employed. In addition, we also provide an optimized terminating criterion, based on which the agents will be able to know whether and when they are well localized, and thus can terminate their localization procedure efficiently. Through simulations, we observe that by virtue of the proposed OCF game based opportunistic cooperative localization scheme along with the provided terminating criterion, the limitations of conventional distributed cooperative localization can be alleviated at the cost of negligible performance degradation. © 1972-2012 IEEE.
