The paper proposes an energy-aware contention-based protocol for the medium access control (MAC) sub-layer for wireless sensor networks. The innovative approach with frequent sleeps proactively and aggressively reduces the wasted energy while increasing the throughput and decreasing the latency. The proposed MAC protocol solves the energy inefficiency caused by idle listening, control-packet overhead, and overhearing. Simulation experiments have been performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, especially compared to the S-MAC and T-MAC protocols.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing has become the killer application in the wired Internet and might also be highly attractive for mobile networks. In particular since UMTS operators are searching for new applications which do both: a) exploit the potential of the UMTS technology and b) motivate the user to adopt the new technology. In this work we are investigating the performance of an eDonkey-based mobile P2P file-sharing system by means of time-dynamic simulation. Mobile networks differ from wireline networks by the limited capacity of the radio link and the mobility of the users. P2P networks, in contrast, are overlays which consider the transport network in an abstract way. In a mobile environment, the question arises, whether the abstraction can be maintained and what will be the performance impact if there is any. We will show in detail how the mobile access technology (GPRS or UMTS), the churn behavior of mobile users, the file size of mobile specific content, and special infrastructure entities, such as a cache peer, influences the performance of the suggested mobile P2P file-sharing service.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) networks offer reliable and efficient services in different application scenarios. In particular, structured P2P protocols (like Chord (L. Stoica et al., 2001)) have to handle changes in the overlay topology fast and with as little signaling overhead as possible. This paper analyzes the ability of the Chord protocol to keep the network structure up to date, even in environments with high churn rates, i.e. nodes joining and leaving the network frequently. High churn rates occur, e.g., in mobile environments, where participants have to deal with the limited resources of their mobile devices, such as short battery lifetimes or high communication costs. In this paper, we analyze different design parameters and their influence on the stability of Chord-based network structures. We also present several modifications to the basic Chord stabilization scheme, resulting in a much more stable overlay topology.

Mobile networks differ from their wireline counterparts mainly by the high costs for air transmissions and by the mobility of the users. A new entity, denoted as the crawling peer, is suggested in order to optimize the resource mediation mechanism for a mobile P2P file sharing application. The crawling peer locates content on behalf of mobile peers. It is placed in the wireline part of the mobile network and thus, does not suffer from the above mentioned restrictions. The crawling peer is part of a comprehensive mobile P2P file sharing architecture [1] which is based on the popular eDonkey file sharing application. The performance of three querying strategies of the crawling peer is investigated with respect to banning at the index servers and the response time of requests, i.e. the time to find a file. The results show that the selection of an appropriate request strategy for the crawling peer maximizes the probabihty of locating a file while the probability to be banned by an eDonkey index server is minimized.

Publish/subscribe systems have gained increasing interest in the past few years. There are many commercial products available today that rely on them directly. However, up to now there has been no discussion about pricing in such systems. We present a new strategyproof distributed algorithm that calculates the maximum subtree of the broker network and the costs arising for the clients. These payments sum up to the amount defined by the marginal cost mechanism and maximize the social surplus (i.e. the sum of the utilities minus the costs). It is taken into account that there may be multiple publishers serving one filter. An extended self-stabilized version copes with systems whose structure underlies a permanent change when publishers (dis-)appear and client utility changes. An adjustment is presented that considers different rates for subscriptions and therefore weakens the previous all-or-nothing scenario. Copyright 2004 ACM.

It is important for an incremental crawler to know how web pages evolve and the relation between their changing frequencies and the link-attributes such as indegrees. This paper proposes a model for incremental crawling and performs an experiment to verify the correlation between them, by monitoring the evolution of all the link-attributes of the web pages within one website. Particularly, we look deeply into one special kind of page named Index-pages. From the experiment, we can make four conclusions: (1) Pages which have bigger indegrees, outdegrees or PageRank values change more often, and these link-attributes all approximately obey a power-law distribution. (2) The link-attributes of pages seldom change though the pages change themselves. (3) A small proportion of the pages link to most of the vertexes in the web graph. (4) The Index-pages link to sizeable new pages in a website. These conclusions can be used to greatly enhance the performance of an incremental crawler, which is the foremost component for general search engines and web information stores.

An External Broker Interface Based on Existing Trading Protocols

This paper presents an approach to the specification of external interfaces of an electronic broker used in the Architecture for Electronic Brokerage systems (AEBS). The external interface specified by the AEBS architecture provides both rich functionality and backward compatibility with trading methods that are currently in use in the electronic marketplace. This is achieved by defining the interface at two levels: the external protocol interface and the external object interface. The external protocol interface has been defined in terms of traditional protocols in order to provide access to basic brokerage services for customers and suppliers that already operate in the electronic market. This facilitates the easy introduction of a broker to the market since no modifications are required on the customer or supplier side to use the new brokerage services. The advanced external object interface has been designed and defined using the CORBA model. This provides other actors that need advanced brokerage services with access to the full functionality of a broker. This paper focuses on the design of the external protocol interface of a brokerage system. © 2002, Kluwer Academic Publishers.
