This paper proposes an architecture to classify traffic flows of IP access networks, and signalize to hybrid optical network the most appropriate paradigm, Optical Circuit Switching (OCS) and Optical Burst Switching (OBS), to be used. The concept of software defined networks, more specifically the OpenFlow technology, was used to enable the architecture. Furthermore, a performance evaluation and feasibility of the proposed architecture are presented through experiments.

This paper presents a novel algorithm named Double-layer Multi-expression Programming (DMEP). Then DMEP model is applied to the prediction of 28-day Portland cement compressive strength. We compare DMEP model with other four soft computing models, namely Multi-Expression Programming model (MEP), Gene Expression Programming model (GEP), Neural networks model (NN) and Fuzzy logic model (FL) on 28-day cement strength prediction. The experiment results show that DMEP model has a lower rate in RMSE and MAE, and the prediction average percentage error of the cement strength data using DMEP model is reduced to 2.18%, which is lower than other four models. The results obtained from the computational tests demonstrate that DMEP is a promising technique for the prediction of cement strength. © 2012 IEEE.

Wireless Mesh networks (WMNs) have gained increasing attention as an attractive means to provide connectivity in complement to access as offered by regular Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Such a grass-root technique, however, often suffers from detrimental operating conditions and poor quality. Network virtualization, on the other hand, has been widely advocated as a possibility to overcome what has often been referred to as the ossification of the Internet. Combining the concept of network virtualization with WMN technology, therefore, appears to be promising and desirable. It is envisioned that well managed multiple Virtual networks (VNs) may overcome shortcomings of WMNs on the one hand, and extend the reach of the Internet beyond its current confinement into the realm and control of the user on the other hand. In this paper, we argue for a context-based approach for an effective means to extend multi-VNs from the Internet domain into WMN environments. We describe both mobility and preferences as context models in order to create virtualized WMNs based on these types of context models. As a result, it is envisioned to achieve a comprehensive connectivity coverage, accompanied by high assurance in network quality. We further present a distributed solution to manage multi-VNs, and a mobility-aware context use case to demonstrate the usefulness of our approach. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

Financial service providers are moving many services on-line to reduce their costs and facilitate customers' interaction. Criminals have quickly found several ways to exploit multiple vulnerabilities to perpetrate attacks. Traditional signature based detection methods are nowadays easily circumvented due to the amount of new malware samples and the use of sophisticated evasion techniques. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we developed a new detection system based in the modeling of the browser execution behavior within an isolated environment. Second, we analyse the results of our system over a set of malware samples. Financial institutions are now playing an important role against malware that specifically affect their customers by deploying their own detection tools. However, most approaches tend to rely on the malware sample itself in order to deploy useless signatures or perform time consuming reverse engineering methods to understand malware actions, so our work aims to help them to be more proactive, implementing tools to protect themselves from new threats.

GDCA: A distributed channel assignment mechanism for multi-radio multi-channel wireless mesh networks

Channel assignment is one of the most important problem in the research of the multi-radio multi-channel wireless mesh networks ((MRMC-WMN). Aiming at minimizing the overall network interference and optimizing the usage of channel resource, channel assignment problem must obey the constraint of limited radios and available channels for MRMC-WMN. The above optimization problem is known to be NP-complete. This paper focuses on the study of channel assignment in MRMC-WMN. We propose a new grid-loop-based echanism for dynamic channel assignment. Our mechanism exploits the group which we called grid-loop, which is constructed on distributed minimum spanning tree by self-organized. Our new GDCA scheme has many advantages over cluster-based scheme. The analysis and comparison demonstrates its feasibility, stability, cost-saving and efficiency. © 2011 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

Among several techniques proposed for indoor positioning using IEEE 802.11 Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) based networks, those that rely on fingerprinting have been demonstrated to outperform those based on lateration, angulation, and cell of origin in terms of accuracy. We compare and evaluate three Wi-Fi fingerprinting techniques that use the K-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN), Naive Bayes Classifier (NBC) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithms. Our experiments show that SVM-based fingerprinting outperformed both k-NN and NBC-based fingerprinting, achieving accuracies of 2 meters or better within our testbed. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper, we consider addressing the resource allocation and pricing strategies in a Compute Cloud for both independent tasks and tasks from workflow schemes. Workflow scheduling of tasks is an important problem due to the fact that individual sub-tasks constituting the workflow may demand additional resources and hence may stall the entire process. We employ two axiomatic bargaining approaches (Nash Bargaining Solution (NBS) and Raiffa Bargaining Solution (RBS)) proposed in the literature to formulate the problem and derive an optimal solution for allocating virtual CPU instances in a Compute Cloud for both independent tasks and workflow tasks. We also analyze the effectiveness of our strategies via rigorous simulation experiments and we show that our strategies are adaptable to the requirements by the Cloud service providers (CSPs) in estimating the resource requirements. Further, we show that NBS ensures proportional fairness whereas RBS can handle real-time task arrivals and task dynamics. Finally we introduce the concept of asymmetric pricing scheme in which a user can specify his budget constraints and CSPs can attempt to maximize the revenue without sacrificing the performance. This asymmetric bargaining approach is an important contribution in this work which allows the CSP to choose different parameters such as deadline and/or budget requirements for deriving optimal resource allocation. The deadline based resource allocation is particularly useful for workflow-based applications which have tasks waiting for the completion of other tasks.

This paper presents a new approach to coordinating clusters of fail-over storage servers. The proposed protocol is designed for supporting large scale on-line storage services which positioned for strong consistency and high availability. Without sacrificing much performance, the protocol requires only one round-trip message communication with redundant servers. A distributed file system with single centralized master extended with this protocol confirms its efficiency as tens of thousands of operations per second and high availability of 99.9995%. © 2011 IEEE.

One of the major constraints of wireless sensor networks is limited energy available to sensor nodes because of the small size of the batteries they use as source of power. Clustering is one of the routing techniques that have been using to minimize sensor nodes’ energy consumption during operation. In this paper, A Novel Clustering Algorithm for Energy Efficiency in Wireless Sensor networks (ANCAEE) has been proposed. The algorithm achieves good performance in terms of minimizing energy consumption during data transmission and energy consumptions are distributed uniformly among all nodes. ANCAEE uses a new method of clusters formation and election of cluster heads. The algorithm ensures that a node transmits its data to the cluster head with a single hop transmission and cluster heads forward their data to the base station with multi-hop transmissions. Simulation results show that our approach consumes less energy and effectively extends network utilization.
