A Health Care Establishment (HCE) is an establishment where medical services are rendered. The above services are provided by the health care personnel. The infrastructure of a HCE may include Information Technology (IT) equipment that stores and processes HC information. Previously, IT equipment consisted solely of stand-alone systems, whereas in recent years, the trend has been towards computer networks and distributed systems in HCEs. The spread of distributed information technology in HCEs have necessitated the implementation of Security in HCISs, to assure confidentiality, integrity and availability of HCE information. This paper discusses the issues of Security and Network Security in Health Care Information systems (HCISs). It also suggests a method in establishing Network Security Guidelines and describes Principles for the provision of Network Security in HCEs. © 1996, The SEISMED Consortium.

In disaster situations communication and power infrastructure could be damaged, disrupting their associated services. This could delay relief efforts and cost more lives. In situations where connections are damaged and unreliable, peer-to-peer (P2P) and delay-tolerant networking (DTN) technologies can help provide alternative communication modes particularly in support of rescue and relief operations. Combining the benefits of the store-and-forward capability of DTN and the data propagation techniques of Wi-Fi Direct, we have created a flexible framework called ARC which allows users to create applications that could meet their specific requirements, particularly those in support of emergency communications. To demonstrate our framework, we created a simple application using ARC, and used this application to evaluate its DTN and Wi-Fi Direct group recovery capabilities. © 2016 IEEE.

High quality video streaming for mobile users is difficult to achieve in some areas of the world due to poor broadband capacity and sparse network coverage. We propose a bandwidth-sharing scheme to allow users with limited uplink bandwidth to borrow idle bandwidth from nearby access points and provide these users the opportunity to experience higher quality video than what their own bandwidth could normally support. We developed a Linux kernel implementation of a multipath less-than-best-effort (MP-LBE) protocol for bandwidth scavenging and demonstrated, through testbed experiments, that video quality may be improved through bandwidth sharing. This may bring us closer to the 'video everywhere' vision even as incremental upgrades are made on broadband Internet infrastructure. © 2015 IEEE.

In classical real-time systems the resources for an application are allocated at system start so that every resource request can be fulfilled in future. This would lead to much internal waste of resources in the case of modern Self-X systems, because these systems have highly dynamic resource consumptions. The Flexible Resource Manager (FRM) was developed to overcome this problem. The manager puts temporarily unused resources at other applications' disposal. In this paper the FRM approach is evaluated by concrete application examples and randomly generated applications. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper we present and analyze HSkip+, a self-stabilizing overlay network for nodes with arbitrary heterogeneous bandwidths. HSkip+ has the same topology as the Skip+ graph proposed by Jacob et al. [1] but its self-stabilization mechanism significantly outperforms the self-stabilization mechanism proposed for Skip+. Also, the nodes are now ordered according to their bandwidths and not according to their identifiers. Various other solutions have already been proposed for overlay networks with heterogeneous bandwidths, but they are not self-stabilizing. In addition to HSkip+ being self-stabilizing, its performance is on par with the best previous bounds on the time and work for joining or leaving a network of peers of logarithmic diameter and degree and arbitrary bandwidths. Also, the dilation and congestion for routing messages is on par with the best previous bounds for such networks, so that HSkip+ combines the advantages of both worlds. Our theoretical investigations are backed by simulations demonstrating that HSkip+ is indeed performing much better than Skip+ and working correctly under high churn rates. © 2014 IEEE.

Cooperative awareness is established by vehicles exchanging their status frequently. In situations where a high number of vehicles access the communication channel with high frequency, communication and cooperative awareness suffer from increased packet loss. So far, forwarding of beacons focuses on extending the range of V2V communication which is not necessarily needed in most scenarios. In this paper, we motivate selective beacon forwarding to improve the reliability of cooperative awareness in high load situations. We define a metric to measure the quality of cooperative awareness and compare different static beacon rates by a simulation study. Especially in high load situations, we evaluate selective forwarding of beacons to overcome the awareness degradation due to interference, leading to packet loss even at short distances. We show that our approach causes only slight overhead in terms of additional messages and that the age of forwarded information is less than half the beacon interval. © 2010 IEEE.

Networked customer devices provide a powerful, flexible and cost-efficient implementation environment for cyber-physical system applications but due to their inherent unreliability can directly support limited dependability only. Since in such an environment non-critical functions can collect, process and prepare comprising data which supports the adaptation and optimization so that new and significantly enriched medical functions can be realized, we envisage Big Dependable systems (BDS), a corresponding upcoming class of systems. Major steps towards their systematic development utilize approaches for communication and dynamic configuration in service-oriented systems, for automated monitoring and repair, and for in-built fault tolerance. We report on respective approaches examined and on a set of pilot applications before the vision of BDS is outlined before that background. The pilot applications employ cyber-physical systems in order to support rehabilitation training sessions which are remotely supervised and take place as well at home as in a virtual reality.

Community Health Information Tracking System using Short Message Service (chitSMS) is an extension of CHITS which is a system that stores health records of patients in the barangay. Another project incorporated a mobile component in CHITS, enabling the health worker to visit the patient, do routine check-ups and medical services, and update CHITS when the health worker returns to the health center. Without a remote connection, however, the health worker has to return frequently to the usually distant health center to update the CHITS database with the data gathered from the field consult. chitSMS addresses this by using SMS as a mode of remote data transfer. It ensures the reliable transmission of the data by implementing a modified selective repeat protocol. Furthermore, it performs the Deflate algorithm for compression of the data being sent to minimize the cost.
