Efficient utilization of spectral bands in a dynamic environment with a continuously changing occupation rate is challenging. Static spectral allocations preclude the use of unoccupied spectrum, unless the spectrum manager has released the allocation to another mission. Standard spectral sensing techniques employ swept narrowband receivers. While effective in creating a composite, these techniques are ineffective at identifying short duration signals. Real-time spectral analysis techniques are effective at capturing short duration transmissions, but usually have narrow band capabilities, limited dynamic range and are relatively expensive. Timely accurate sensing of wide spectral band using traditional spectral estimations at the Nyquist rate (or higher) is another challenge due to the high data rate. Compressed sensing (CS) techniques utilize signal-to-information rate processing when signals are sparse in a specific domain. Dynamic spectrum access (often considered a critical component of a cognitive radio (CR)) can reutilize temporally unoccupied spectrum. An accurate estimate of the current state of spectral occupancy is critical to the autonomous decision processes involved in dynamic spectrum access. From this perspective, CS is being studied as an enhancement to dynamic spectrum access strategies. This study addresses feasibility issues for the development of autonomous CS-CR systems that are capable of performing spectrum sensing and recovery without a priori information about the spectral occupancy. Since recovery requires computationally intense non-linear optimization, we perform a single platform trade study on CS methodologies (BP-PD, BP-SPG, ROMP, Edge Detection, and Sequential Recovery) for efficient wideband recovery relative to execution time and reconstruction error. Among several techniques proposed for indoor positioning using IEEE 802.11 Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) based networks, those that rely on fingerprinting have been demonstrated to outperform those based on lateration, angulation, and cell of origin in terms of accuracy. We compare and evaluate three Wi-Fi fingerprinting techniques that use the K-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN), Naive Bayes Classifier (NBC) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithms. Our experiments show that SVM-based fingerprinting outperformed both k-NN and NBC-based fingerprinting, achieving accuracies of 2 meters or better within our testbed.

Quality of Experience (QoE) has gained enormous attention during the recent years. So far, most of the existing QoE research has focused on audio and video streaming applications, although HTTP traffic carries the majority of traffic in the residential broadband Internet. However, existing QoE models for this domain do not consider temporal dynamics or historical experiences of the user's satisfaction while consuming a certain service. This psychological influence factor of past experience is referred to as the memory effect. The first contribution of this paper is the identification of the memory effect as a key influence factor for Web QoE modeling based on subjective user studies. As second contribution, three different QoE models are proposed which consider the implications of the memory effect and imply the required extensions of the basic models. The proposed Web QoE models are described with a) support vector machines, b) iterative exponential regressions, and c) two-dimensional hidden Markov models. © 2011 ITC.

This paper is about the performance of range queries on historic web page data set, i.e. requests into a data set of web pages that keeps record of historic versions of HTML data of URLs on the web for a subset of data, the URLs and the timestamps of which satisfy the query conditions. To keep track of all versions of every web URL, the data set could easily scale up to terabytes. Hence, systems providing query services to such a data set would require much computing resource. We show that in this scenario data storage layout has significant impact on query performance and propose storage design principles for performance improvement through quantitative approaches. © 2010 IEEE.

The problem of scheduling a set of tasks on a multiprocessor architecture is addressed. Tasks are assumed to be sporadic with arbitrary deadlines and may migrate between processors. The execution of migrating tasks is controlled by a bandwidth reservation scheme so that schedulab.lity is guaranteed by EDF. Task migration costs are taken into consideration. Results from experiments indicate that the proposed approach performs well in terms of schedulab.lity. © 2010 IEEE.

Initial deployment of secrets plays a crucial role in any security design, but especially in hardware constrained wireless sensor networks. Many key management schemes assume either manually pre-installed shared secrets or keys authenticated with the aid of out-of-band channels. While manually installing secret keys affects the practicability of the key deployment, out-of-band channels require additional interfaces of already hardware-limited wireless sensor nodes. In this work, we present a key deployment protocol that uses pair-wise ephemeral keys generated from physical layer information which subsequently enables an authenticated exchange of public keys. Hence, this work presents an elegant solution to the key deployment problem without requiring more capabilities than already availab.e on common low-cost devices. To justify the feasibility of this solution, we implement and experimentally evaluate the proposed key deployment protocol using commodity wireless sensor motes. ©2010 IEEE.

Interdisciplinary product development is faced with the collab.ration of diverse roles and a multitude of interrelated artifacts. Traditional and sequential process models cannot deal with the long-lasting and dynamic behavior of the development processes of today. Moreover, development processes have to be tailored to the needs of the projects, which are usually distributed today. Thus, keeping these projects on track from a methodology point of view is difficult. In order to deal with these challenges, this paper will present a novel method engineering and enactment approach. It combines the ideas of workflow technologies and product line engineering for method engineering as well as agent technology for the development process enactment.
