With the growing research interest in intelligent pervasive environments, there is a need to plan our layouts with sufficient criteria modelling so as to provide support for context-driven route navigation. However, current spatial layout modelling and simulation tools are largely inadequate for the task required since they are based on manual and heuristic techniques and do not provide a rich resource of context that will very well reflect user-perceived models of a layout. In this paper, we present an initial proof of concept prototype of a multi-perspective intelligent layout design and analysis framework to support context-driven navigation. We aim to show that some of the ideas to emerge from the field of intelligent systems, HCI, semantic technologies and advanced simulation could be combined with novel techniques in GIS-based information and image processing to analyse and visualise traffic networks and layouts from a range of design, travel and userrelated perspectives. © 2008 IEEE.

The paper provides a new formulation of the wellknown box-pushing problem by robots as a multiobjective optimization problem, and presents Paretooptimal solutions to the problem. The proposed method allows both turning and translation of the box, while shifting it to a desired goal position. Local planning scheme is employed here to determine the magnitude of the forces applied by two mobile robots at specific locations on the box to align and translate it in each distinct step of motion of the box, so as to minimize the consumption of both time and energy. This is realized using Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II). The proposed scheme, to the best of the authors' knowledge, is a first successful communication-free, centralized co-operation between two robots applied in box-shifting, satisfying multiple objectives simultaneously using evolutionary algorithm. © 2008 IEEE.

The paper proposes three alternative extensions to the classical global-best particle swarm optimization dynamics, and compares their relative performance with the classical particle swarm optimization algorithm. The first extension, which readily follows from the well-known Lyapunov's stability theorem, provides a mathematical basis of the particle dynamics with a guaranteed convergence at an optimum. The inclusion of local and global attractors to this dynamics leads to faster convergence speed and better accuracy than the classical one. The second extension augments the velocity adaptation equation by a negative randomly weighted positional term of individual particle, while the third extension considers the negative positional term in place of the inertial term. computer simulations further reveal that the last two extensions outperform both the classical and the first extension in convergence speed and accuracy. © 2008 IEEE.

The concept of a protected working capacity envelope (PWCE) is very attractive for designing a dynamically survivable WDM network. In this paper, we consider a shared-cycles-based PWCE approach for designing survivable WDM networks where the traffic demand is dynamically changing. We develop an integer linear programming formulation to determine the protected working capacity envelope and use simulations to evaluate the blocking performance. Copyright © 2008 ACM.

We propose that double broadcast services can be overlaid over high-speed point-to-point downlink data in a WDM-PON with source-free optical network units (ONUs). In the optical line terminal (OLT), a set of single-drive MachZehnder modulators (MZMs) are driven by downlink point-to-point data to generate a differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) format. The downlink DPSK signals from different wavelengths are multiplexed and then fed to a following dual-parallel MZM (DPMZM) as a double broadcast services transmitter. The broadcast service-l is an optical carrier suppression (OCS) format, while the broadcast service-2 is an inverse return-to-zero (IRZ) forma. After the transmission, at each ONU, the optical signals are separated by an optical filter. The filtered OCS signal is detected to retrieve the broadcast service-1. The DPSK/IRZ signals are split into three parts, one part is detected by an IRZ receiver to recover the broadcast service-2, the second part is detected by a DPSK receiver to retrieve the downlink data and the third part is re-modulated by the upstream amplitude shift keying (ASK). We also perform an experiment to verify the feasibility of the proposed scheme, where the power penalties of less than 1.5 dB are obtained after 25-km transmission with 1.25-Gb/s data rate. © 2008 SPIE.

Data-intensive Grid applications require huge data transferring between multiple geographically separated computing nodes where computing tasks are executed. For a future WDM network to efficiently support this type of emerging applications, traditional approaches to establishing lightpaths between given source destination pairs are not sufficient because a computing task may be executed on any one of several computing nodes having the necessary resources. Therefore, lightpath establishment has to be considered jointly with task scheduling to achieve best performance. In this paper, we study the optimization problems of jointly scheduling both computing resources and network resources. We first present the formulation of two optimization problems with the objectives being the minimization of the completion time of a job and minimization of the resource usage/cost to satisfy a job with a deadline respectively. When the objective is to minimize the completion time, we devise an optimal algorithm for a special type of applications. Furthermore, we propose efficient heuristics to deal with general applications with either optimization objective and demonstrate their good performances via simulation. © 2008 IEEE.

The link interference and multi-hop characters make Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) performance can not be tuned well by local information. We propose an analytical flow control scheme (AFCS) based on the optimal bandwidth allocation model that is specifically designed for the unique characteristics of WMN. The original contribution incorporated in a flow contention model of WMN based on maximal link interference region. With the contention constraint, the optimality of bandwidth allocation can be achieved by maximizing the aggregated utility across all flows. We then deduce a practical equation for adjusting sending rate from the bandwidth allocation model. Based on the simplified analytical equation and the congestion notification message mechanism, we propose an equation-based flow control framework for real-time traffic in WMN. Simulation results have shown the AFCS can improve the capacity of the WMN by 40% and alleviate the unfairness and delay jitter greatly. The fast response, fairness and steadiness characters of the AFCS are helpful for rigorous real-time traffic and dynamic wireless network. Copyright 2007 ACM.

The development of web services and especially semantic web services is a tremendous task for people who are not familiar with all language constructs. Especially with the growing mass of several semantic web service approaches a language-independent service development is needed. This gap can be filled by using model-driven software development. Therefore, in this paper we introduce a meta-model for semantic web services and show the benefits of automatic code generation on the basis of a small example.
