Large-scale agent-based systems are required to self-optimize towards multiple, potentially conflicting, policies of varying spatial and temporal scope. As a result, not all agents may be implementing all policies at all times, resulting in agent heterogeneity. As agents share their operating environment, significant dependencies can arise between agents and therefore between policy implementations. To address self-optimization in the presence of agent heterogeneity, policy dependency and the lack of global knowledge that is inherent in large-scale decentralized environments, we propose distributed W-Learning (DWL). DWL is a reinforcement learning (RL)-based algorithm for collaborative agent-based self-optimization towards multiple policies, which relies only on local interactions and learning. We have evaluated the DWL algorithm in a simulation of a self-organizing urban traffic control (UTC) system and show that using DWL can improve the performance of multiple policies deployed simultaneously, even over corresponding single-policy deployments. For example, in UTC, optimizing simultaneously for cars and public transport vehicles reduces the waiting times of cars to 78% of their waiting times in the best-performing single-policy deployment that optimizes for cars only, while also outperforming the widely-deployed round-robin and saturation balancing traffic controllers that we used as baselines.

The versatile MOdeling, Specification and Evaluation Language is the core element of the MOSEL-2 tool. This description languages provides a high-level means for specifying models, performance measures, and the graphical presentation of results. The description languages is implemented in form of an evaluation environment that comprises translators to the modeling languages of several third-party performance evaluation tools that evaluate the specified model.

Mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a type of wireless network consisting of a set of self-configured mobile hosts that can communicate with each other using wireless links without the assistance of any fixed infrastructure. This has made it possible for us to create distributed mobile computing applications and has also brought several new challenges in the field of distributed algorithm design. Checkpointing is a well explored fault tolerance technique for the wired and cellular mobile networks. However, it is not directly applicable to MANET owing to its dynamic topology, limited availability of stable storage, partitioning and the absence of fixed infrastructure. In this paper, we propose an adaptive, coordinated and non-blocking checkpointing algorithm to provide fault tolerance in cluster-based MANET, where only a minimum number of mobile hosts in the cluster should take checkpoints. The performance analysis and simulation results show that the proposed scheme requires less coordinating-message cost and performs well compared to the related previous works. Today cloud security and privacy concerns pose significant challenges. One particular challenge consists in how to take into consideration the user's security policies while accessing the outsourced data. In fact, for a given application, we may have a set of rules, as high level security policy, which needs to hold prior to any query execution. Therefore, the main problem that we tackle in this ongoing project is how to enforce this high level security policy in the cloud storage layer without conflicts. To address this challenges, we propose a middleware denoted curlX which consists of two main processes: the security policy enforcement process and the verification process.

Search indices for distributed information are an important building block for many mobile, decentralized applications. However, the network load caused by nodes registering their information in the index can become quite significant especially in mobile networks like vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs), where nodes need to register periodically due to their mobility. Our goal in this paper is to encode this registration information as efficiently as possible. For this purpose, we first analytically study hash keys and Bloom filters as alternative encoding types of nodes' registration data. It turns out that in many situations, Bloom filters are more bandwidth efficient than hash keys, and that they are even more efficient when nodes cooperate. Many such forms of cooperation are conceivable; we define one specific scheme targeting metropolitan VANETs. Our accompanying simulation study shows that this first algorithm already allows for large bandwidth savings in content registration, compared to the alternative of registering hash keys.

This paper discusses the design decisions underlying the CRM114 Discriminator software, how it can be configured as a spam filter, and what we may glean from the preliminary TREC 2005 results. Unlike most other filters, CRM114 is not a fixedpurpose antispam filter;rather, it's a general purpose language meant to expedite the creation of text filters. The pluggable CRM114 architecture allows rapid prototyping and easy support of multiple classifier engines;rather than testing different cutoff parameters, the CRM114 TREC test set tested different classifier algorithms and learning protocols.

Connectors are used to realize component interactions in component systems. Apart from their primary function, which is mediating the communication, their implementation can also support additional features that, while unrelated to the primary function, may benefit from their placement in connectors. Such features are often optional in the sense that they can be activated and deactivated at run-time. The problem is that even if they are disabled, their very presence in the connector incurs certain overhead. In this paper, we describe an approach to eliminate this overhead by reconfiguration of the connector implementation. Besides connectors, the approach is applicable to similar technologies such as reflective middleware and other architecture-based component systems and frameworks. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

This paper proposes an efficient non-blocking coordinated checkpointing algorithm for distributed message passing system which uses transitive dependency information. The processes synchronize their checkpointing activities so that a globally consistent set of checkpoints is always maintained in the system. These algorithms do not require channels to be FIFO (First-In, First-Out) and ensure that each checkpoint taken is part of a consistent global checkpoint. Our scheme also records a minimum number of checkpoints by making sure that only few processes are required to take checkpoints in any execution - it uses very less control-message cost when compared to other related works. © 2015 ACM.

The implementation of a distributed digital logic simulation algorithm on a network of workstations is presented. The simulation of digital circuits is done using a demand driven approach. The simulation is performed on a network of workstations using the Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) software. The use of the PVM as a platform for parallel and distributed applications is assessed in the light of the test results. The feasibility of running parallel logical simulation algorithms on such platform is considered. © 1995 IEEE.

Increasing traffic congestion is a major problem in urban areas, which incurs heavy economic and environmental costs in both developing and developed countries. Efficient urban traffic control (UTC) can help reduce traffic congestion. However, the increasing volume and the dynamic nature of urban traffic pose particular challenges to UTC. Reinforcement Learning (RL) has been shown to be a promising approach to efficient UTC. However, most existing work on RL-based UTC does not adequately address the fluctuating nature of urban traffic. This paper presents Soilse 1 , a decentralized RL-based UTC optimization scheme that includes a nonparametric pattern change detection mechanism to identify local traffic pattern changes that adversely affect an RL agent's performance. Hence, Soilse is adaptive as agents learn to optimize for different traffic patterns and responsive as agents can detect genuine traffic pattern changes and trigger relearning. We compare the performance of Soilse to two baselines, a fixed-time approach and a saturation balancing algorithm that emulates SCATS, a well-known UTC system. The comparison was performed based on a simulation of traffic in Dublin's inner city centre. Results from using our scheme show an approximate 35%-43% and 40%-54% better performance in terms of average vehicle waiting time and average number of vehicle stops respectively against the best baseline performance in our simulation.
