GDCA: A distributed channel assignment mechanism for multi-radio multi-channel wireless mesh networks

Channel assignment is one of the most important problem in the research of the multi-radio multi-channel wireless mesh networks ((MRMC-WMN). Aiming at minimizing the overall network interference and optimizing the usage of channel resource, channel assignment problem must obey the constraint of limited radios and available channels for MRMC-WMN. The above optimization problem is known to be NP-complete. This paper focuses on the study of channel assignment in MRMC-WMN. We propose a new grid-loop-based echanism for dynamic channel assignment. Our mechanism exploits the group which we called grid-loop, which is constructed on distributed minimum spanning tree by self-organized. Our new GDCA scheme has many advantages over cluster-based scheme. The analysis and comparison demonstrates its feasibility, stability, cost-saving and efficiency. © 2011 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

The intrinsic scalability limitations of traditional centralised network management (NM) become significantly more pronounced when transfers of bulk network monitoring data are considered. This fact has encouraged a trend towards distributed management intelligence, which promises more flexible and scalable solutions. However, distributed mobile agent (MA) based NM architectures reported in the literature do not adequately address scalability problems when considering data-intensive NM applications. In this paper, we present three novel applications in which MA are used to perform management data aggregation, acquire SNMP table snapshots and filter SNMP table contents subject to filtering expressions. Both real-time and off-line NM data acquisition is considered. The applications, supported by a lightweight management framework described in previous work, are shown to outperform SNMP-based polling in terms of bandwidth consumption.

The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is a defacto standard for software development and, together with the Object Constraint Language (OCL), allows for a precise description of a system prior to its implementation. At the same time, these descriptions can be employed to check the consistency and, hence, the correctness of a given UML/OCL model. In the recent past, numerous (automated) approaches have been proposed for this purpose. The behavior of the systems has usually been considered by means of sequence diagrams, state machines, and activity diagrams. But with the increasing popularity of design by contract, also composite structures, classes, and operations are frequently used to describe behavior in UML/OCL. However, for these description means no solution for the validation and verification of concurrent behavior is available yet. In this work, we propose such a solution. To this end, we discuss the possible interpretations of “concurrency” which are admissible according to the common UML/OCL interpretation and, afterwards, propose a methodology which exploits solvers for SAT Modulo Theories (i. e., SMT solvers) in order to check the concurrent behavior of UML/OCL models. How to address the resulting problems is described and illustrated by means of a running example. Finally, the application of the proposed method is demonstrated.

In conjunction with automated vehicles, Inter-Vehicle Communication represents the next `big thing' towards the vision of cooperative driving, where road participants share information about their planned behaviour and where hazardous situations are solved or avoided jointly. Several requirements need to be fulfilled to reach this long-term goal. One requirement is a common information base, where all road participants are fully aware of each other. The idea of collective perception contributes to this common information base by sharing local sensor data with other road participants. Whereas most related work focuses on the aspects of sensor data fusion, we focus on the implications of an ETSI ITS G5 based network for collective perception. We present and analyse different message formats and dissemination variants for sharing sensor data. Their usability is validated in an extensive microscopic simulation study. In particular, implications caused by Decentralized Congestion Control as proposed by standardisation are assessed in a constrained environment with hundreds of vehicles.

Full-duplex communications have the potential to double the spectral efficiency. Self-interference hinders the realization of full-duplex communications, thus significant suppression needs to be achieved to enable simultaneous transmit and receive. This paper presents a digitally-assisted analog self-interference cancellation by pre-coding a cancellation waveform on an auxiliary transmitter using a modified copy of the transmitted signal. Over 30 dB self-interference cancellation has been achieved over a bandwidth of 20 MHz.

Recent advances in P2P lookup overlays provide an appealing solution for distributed search without relying on a single database server. In addition to performing resource discovery, these P2P substrates also offer membership management for dynamic peers. In this paper, we propose a publicly shared architecture called VC2A that takes advantage of a P2P lookup substrate for computational applications. VC2A targets computational master-slave applications. An application running in VC2A dynamically allocates resources from the system on the fly. These allocated resources then self-manage and -heal. We have implemented an architecture based on our previous efforts that include an enhanced P2P lookup overlay and a mobile agent system on top of this overlay. We show that VC2A is not only scalable but robust, and takes advantage of heterogeneity of the resources.

The quality of life has been significantly improved and one of the main reasons is the medical advances of the past decades. Nevertheless, to further advance the research and services in the field, practitioners, researchers and health organizations should share more information. While this need is indisputable, the sensitivity of the information demands that it is preprocessed, so that the published data are anonym zed and individuals cannot be identified. The scope of this work is to highlight the difficulties in providing automated anonymization approaches for medical records without consulting experts in the field. One of the major problems that is going to be highlighted is that Quasi-Identifiers (QI) are not independent. It is well known that combinations of QIs can be used to infer other relevant information. Nevertheless, this work tries to exploit the other way of information flow, we show how sensitive attributes can be exploited to derive information about the QIs, leading to many privacy hazards for the patients whose records are shared. To this extent, we illustrate some relevant examples and discuss probable counter-measures.

Optical Wireless (OW) provides an alternative to RF for wireless connectivity. In applications where Radio Frequency (RF) might interfere with system operations, OW can be used to provide connectivity. This work studies the applicability of OW to connect two agents in a swarm. The work discusses transmitter and receiver designs and shares the results of simulation and lab experiments for different circuits configurations. The work shows the results of a reliable 100Kbps link between agents operating at a distance of approximately equal to 3 meters.

Cooperative localization has emerged as a promising technique which can complement or even replace global positioning systems (GPS) in many practical scenarios, such as GPS-denied environments. In this paper, we concentrate on the distributed cooperative localization design. The conventional distributed cooperative localization approaches usually yield high computational complexity and communication overhead, due to the lack of an efficient link selection mechanism. For this purpose, we propose a novel concept named opportunistic cooperative localization, based on which each agent is able to select the most informative links rather than utilize all the possible links in a distributed, self-organized, and self-optimized manner. To achieve effective opportunistic selection, overlapping coalition formation (OCF) game is employed. In addition, we also provide an optimized terminating criterion, based on which the agents will be able to know whether and when they are well localized, and thus can terminate their localization procedure efficiently. Through simulations, we observe that by virtue of the proposed OCF game based opportunistic cooperative localization scheme along with the provided terminating criterion, the limitations of conventional distributed cooperative localization can be alleviated at the cost of negligible performance degradation. © 1972-2012 IEEE.
