Proposes a simple paradigm for constructing heuristics for the static assignment of parallel programs onto asynchronous, distributed memory, multiprocessor architectures. The proposed paradigm involves capturing the dominant computation and communication components of an application and using this relatively simpler program representation to determine an assignment. Thus, the mapping problem is reduced from its most general form to a simpler form which often has optimal solutions.< >

The implementation of a distributed digital logic simulation algorithm on a network of workstations is presented. The simulation of digital circuits is done using a demand driven approach. The simulation is performed on a network of workstations using the Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) software. The use of the PVM as a platform for parallel and distributed applications is assessed in the light of the test results. The feasibility of running parallel logical simulation algorithms on such platform is considered.< >

Implementation of a kernel-level consistency control mechanism called invocation-based consistency control (IBCC) is presented. IBCC supports general-purpose persistent object-based distributed computing. It provides mechanisms that support a range of powerful, well-defined consistency semantics. IBCC mechanisms can also be used to implement custom recovery and synchronization. An operating-system-level implementation of IBCC as part of the Clouds distributed operating system that uses memory faulting to initiate locking and intermediate version creation is also given. Performance aspects are discussed, as well as the overhead incurred by supporting IBCC in terms of additional data structures needed in the operating system, and the additional amount of required code.< >

Cloud computing is a groundbreaking solution to acquire computational resources on demand. To deliver high quality cloud services and provide features such as reduced costs and availability to customers, a cloud, like any other computational system, needs to be properly managed in accordance with its characteristics (e.g., scalability, elasticity, timeliness). In this scenario, cloud monitoring is a key to achieve it. To properly work, cloud monitoring systems need to meet several requirements such as scalability, accuracy, and timeliness. This paper aims to unveil the trade-off between timeliness and scalability. Evaluations demonstrate the mutual influence between scalability and timeliness based on monitoring parameters (e.g., monitoring topologies, frequency sampling). Results show that non-deep monitoring topologies and decreasing the frequency sampling assist to reduce the mutual influence between timeliness and scalability.

According to the Internet of Services vision, composite services are created by composing services to complex business processes. The relationships between services in a composition are defined by Service Level Agreements (SLAs). Managing composite SLAs is a complex task which is currently performed manually. In this paper we present an approach for automating the management of composite SLAs by exploiting the explicit knowledge about dependencies between composed services. We define a formal model for representing a set of dependencies. A set of algorithms exploits this information to automate tasks of composite SLA management. These tasks are the validation of SLAs during negotiation, the evaluation of SLA renegotiation requests and the evaluation of SLA violations with regard to their effects on other services. We have validated our approach based on a logistics scenario. We present results with respect to performance and a set of test cases demonstrating the added value of dependency information based automated SLA management.

In this paper, we introduce a business aware framework for the policy-based management of IT systems and its application to utility computing environments. The framework couples two main subsystems on top of an IETF-like policy-based resource control layer. They are MBO (Management by Business Objectives) where the decision ability supported by analysis of business objectives resides, and GSLA (Generalized SLA), an advanced framework for SLA driven management that lends itself quite naturally to the derivation of IT management policies from the SLAs that the enterprise has contracted. We discuss the advantages and the limitations of the state-of-art policy-based approach to systems management, mainly the lack of business and service level context to drive policy-related decisions at system runtime. We then explain how this is remedied in our framework through the interaction mechanism between the reactive policy-based resource control layer and the more proactive business driven decision making engine.

In the current practice, the performance evaluation of RF-based indoor localization solutions is typically realized in non-standardized environments and following ad-hoc procedures, which hampers objective comparison and does not provide clear insight into their intrinsic properties. Many evaluation procedures also neglect important environmental factors like RF interference, diminishing the real-world value of the obtained results. Localization competitions, in which different solutions are evaluated along a set of standardized metrics under unified and representative conditions, can play an important role in mitigating these problems, but their organization is cost and labor intensive. In this paper we report on the design, execution and results from an online localization competition in which several different RF-based indoor localization algorithms have been evaluated with the help of a remotely accessible and automated testbed infrastructure, that reduces these overheads. The competing algorithms have been evaluated following a combination of precision, latency and sensitivity metrics, under four different benchmarking scenarios, resulting in 28 different benchmarking experiments. The obtained results provide strong indication that specific types of RF-interference noticeably degrade the localization performance.

In this Internet era, we have become heavily dependent on the World Wide Web and it has become a basic amenity for humans. A normal user can be trapped easily in this vicious web if not careful enough. It is a field that requires users to be on their toes every time they try to connect to this enormous interconnection of networks. Reports and Surveys have said that in the coming years, Cybercrime could become the biggest threat. In this proposed work, the authors have deployed applications and designed malware for the purpose of simulating various kinds of cyber-attacks so that they could study their effects & affects and ultimately devise solutions to resolve the vulnerabilities in a system. These applications included networking concepts & protocols and a software based keylogger which was developed with no malicious intent, but to analyse the architectural view or design of a malware and to study the stages of a malware attack like entry, distribution, exploitation, infection and execution. Efforts have been made to demonstrate spooting attacks with an idea of identifying vulnerabilities and security loopholes in a particular system that can be exploited by an attacker if not resolved within time. © 2023 IEEE.

Nowadays there is a large and increasing body of learning objects stored on the Web. Some of them reside in different learning repositories, such as the MERLOT repository [1], the Education Network Australia (EDNA) [2], and the Connexions repository [3]. Fedora is an acronym for Flexible Extensible Digital Object Repository Architecture [4]. Fedora's flexibility makes it capable of serving as a digital repository for a variety of use cases, including digital asset management, institutional repositories, digital archives, content management systems, scholarly publishing enterprises and digital libraries [5]. Many universities and companies around the world are using Fedora as a valid approach to manage their increasing knowledge. This document proposes an extension of the Fedora Commons repository which is composed by: A web editing module based on the ISO/IEC 24751-3 Digital Resource Description (DRD) [6] standard in order to label learning objects from the Fedora repository to provide them with accessible characteristics and on the other hand a web editing module to label learning objects from the Fedora Repository based on the IEEE Learning Object Metadata (LOM) [7] standard. Our approach offers institutions the possibility of labelling their learning objects in an accessible way, in order to facilitate the process of delivering the educational resources and the adaptive instructional design adjusted to the special needs of users.
