Low-cost reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are being considered as promising physical-layer technology for next-generation wireless networks due to their ability to re-engineer the propagation environment by tuning their elements. Although RIS-aided systems have many advantages, one of their major bottlenecks is that they can provide coverage only in front of the surface. Fortunately, simultaneous transmitting and reflecting surface (STARS)-assisted systems have emerged to fill this gap by providing 360◦ wireless coverage. In parallel, full-duplex (FD) communication offers a higher achievable rate through efficient spectrum utilization compared to the half-duplex (HD) counterpart. Moreover, two-way/bi-directional communications in an FD system can further enhance the system’s spectral efficiency. Hence, in this paper, we propose a STARS-enabled massive MIMO deployment in an FD two-way communication network for highly efficient spectrum utilization, while covering the dead zones around the STARS. This model enables simultaneous information exchange between multiple nodes, while potentially doubling the spectral efficiency (SE). By invoking the use-and-then-forget (UaTF) combining scheme, we derive a closed-form expression for an achievable SE at each user of the system considering both uplink and downlink communications based on statistical channel state information (CSI), while also accounting for imperfect CSI and correlated fading conditions. Moreover, we formulate an optimization problem to obtain an optimal passive beamforming matrix design at the STARS that maximizes the sum achievable SE. The considered problem is non-convex and we propose a provably-convergent low-complexity algorithm, termed as projected gradient ascent method (ProGrAM), to obtain a stationary solution. Applications that cross the boundaries of different computing machines, operating systems, and programming languages are increasingly the norm. As a result, the need for what might be called bridging technologies to develop software that works across heterogeneous environments has become more compelling. The Common Object Request Broker Architecture is one such technology that is both robust and commercially available. CORBA essentially describes how client applications can invoke operations on server objects using the services of an intermediary known as an Object Request Broker, or ORB. This article introduces CORBA by describing its key components. It then reviews the boundaries it helps to bridge. It concludes by comparing CORBA with a number of other bridging technologies available today.

PodNet is an opportunistic architecture allowing to exchange multimedia content, or podcasts, from mobiles to mobiles in an opportunistic fashion using Wifi. Content can originate from the Internet (e.g., YouTube, BBC) but it can also be user generated content (e.g., pictures or video/voice recordings). We have enhanced the PodNet architecture to extend the reach of online social networking applications (e.g., Facebook, Twitter) to opportunistic networks. We'll demonstrate how Facebook feeds (public or private) are distributed opportunistically among the demo devices that are carried by participants. Using additional PodNet gateway components, content generated in the opportunistic domain can be sent to the Internet (e.g. updates on the Facebook page). Eventually, we will demonstrate an Infoscreen (embedded with a PodNet gateway), which displays useful high-level information (campus life, tram schedules) users can subscribe to, to fetch richer content provided through PodNet. © 2010 ACM.

Opportunistic networks enable mobile users to participate in various social interactions with applications such as content distribution and micro-blogs. Because of their distributed nature, securing user interactions relies rather on trust than hard cryptography. Trust is often based on past user interactions such as in reputation systems relying on ratings. Yet, a more fundamental trust, social trust - assessing a user is genuine with honest intentions - must be established beforehand as many identities can be created easily (i.e., sybils). By leveraging the social network structure and its dynamics (conscious secure pairing and wireless contacts), we propose two complementary approaches for social trust establishment: explicit social trust and implicit social trust. Complexity, trust propagation and security issues are evaluated using real world complex graphs, synthetic mobility models and mobility traces. We show how our approach limits the maximum number of sybils independently of the network size and is more robust against manipulation attacks compared to state-of-the-art approaches such as PGP-like certification chains and distributed community detection algorithms. ©2010 IEEE.

A Health Care Establishment (HCE) is an establishment where medical services are rendered. The above services are provided by the health care personnel. The infrastructure of a HCE may include Information Technology (IT) equipment that stores and processes HC information. Previously, IT equipment consisted solely of stand-alone systems, whereas in recent years, the trend has been towards computer networks and distributed systems in HCEs. The spread of distributed information technology in HCEs have necessitated the implementation of Security in HCISs, to assure confidentiality, integrity and availability of HCE information. This paper discusses the issues of Security and Network Security in Health Care Information systems (HCISs). It also suggests a method in establishing Network Security Guidelines and describes Principles for the provision of Network Security in HCEs. © 1996, The SEISMED Consortium.

Image denoising has been used in various edge computing scenarios such as consumer electronics to improve the image quality and user experience. Existing image denoising methods based on Convolutional Neural networks (CNNs) and vision Transformers achieve good performance by empirically utilizing residual neural network (ResNet) as basic component. However, ResNet lacks interpretability in network design and also long-term memory of features, potentially restricting the performance of denoising networks. In this paper, we propose an Implicit Multi-scale Swin Transformer Network (IMSNet) for image denoising, which introduces the implicit Euler scheme from the feature memory perspective. Specifically, densely connected implicit feature extraction blocks (IFEBs) are designed to learn the residual mapping between noisy and clean images. The IFEB reformulates the initial skip connection of ResNet based on the implicit Euler discretization, providing both network interpretability and long-term memory. In IFEB, the multi-scale swin Transformer block (MSB) is designed as the implicit layer to capture spatial details and non-local contextual information at different scales. Additionally, a cross-layer feature fusion block (CLFF) is proposed to further improve feature reuse capabilities. Compared to existing denoising networks, the extensive experiments demonstrate the superior performance of our IMSNet in various image denoising tasks, and the flexibility in the practical applications with proposed light model on resource-restricted platforms such as consumer electronic devices. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

Community Health Information Tracking System using Short Message Service (chitSMS) is an extension of CHITS which is a system that stores health records of patients in the barangay. Another project incorporated a mobile component in CHITS, enabling the health worker to visit the patient, do routine check-ups and medical services, and update CHITS when the health worker returns to the health center. Without a remote connection, however, the health worker has to return frequently to the usually distant health center to update the CHITS database with the data gathered from the field consult. chitSMS addresses this by using SMS as a mode of remote data transfer. It ensures the reliable transmission of the data by implementing a modified selective repeat protocol. Furthermore, it performs the Deflate algorithm for compression of the data being sent to minimize the cost. © 2010 IEEE.

Image processing, specifically extracting regions of interest, being a costly operation would benefit from a method of storing its output region and input image data in a database for future querying so as to prevent re-execution of the processing operation. This study investigates the performance of using built-in spatial queries found in a couple of modern Database systems to store and retrieve specific regions of image data. After testing two widely used Database software: MongoDB and Postgresql, results have shown that MongoDB performs better in terms of average and tail latency as well as efficiency in disk space consumption. © 2022 IEEE.

Current methods in mapping the availability of WiFi networks, such as crowdsourcing platforms (e.g. Project BASS and CoverageMap) and dedicated wardriving, face limitations in terms of data recency, volume, and cost-effectiveness. Due to the downsides of both these methods, opportunistic wardriving is proposed which utilizes public utility vehicles (PUVs). This study investigates the feasibility of PUVs as potential wardriving vehicles for opportunistic coverage mapping. This method is cost-efficient and removes the problem of data recency because of its continuous daily trips. The findings suggest that opportunistic wardriving with PUVs is viable for wardriving with its capability to detect a high volume of access points (APs). Multiple runs within the University of the Philippines Diliman campus showed the PUVs’ effectiveness in detecting a significant number of APs, with higher success rates at closer distances. Comparatively, warwalking detected fewer APs, but there was a significant overlap between the methods. The study also highlighted significant differences in detected AP types, with wardriving finding more mobile hotspots and miscellaneous devices than warwalking. Overall, the results underline the effectiveness of PUVs in providing extensive WiFi coverage data and further enhancements to the detection system could optimize the approach. ©2024 IEEE.
