Efficient scheduling is a key concern for the effectual execution of performance driven Grid applications, such as workflows. Many list heuristics have been developed for scheduling workflows in centralized Grid environment. However, in this paper, we present a distributed list heuristic for decentralized scheduling of workflow applications in global Grids. The simulation results show that the proposed scheduling approach is scalable with respect to increased workload on the system. © 2009 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a taxonomy that characterizes and classifies different components of autonomic application management in Grids. We also survey several representative Grid systems developed by various projects world-wide to demonstrate the comprehensiveness of the taxonomy. The taxonomy not only highlights the similarities and differences of state-of-the-art technologies utilized in autonomic application management from the perspective of Grid computing, but also identifies the areas that require further research initiatives. © 2010 IEEE.

With the advent of Web 2.0, the user becomes a producer creating lots of data by consuming the functionality of the respective Web applications. Even though more and more valuable data is created, it is difficult to reuse it due to lack of structure. In this paper we discuss easing data integration by using the WebComposition Data Grid Service (WebComposition/DGS). Our approach separates technology and information space concepts in a flexible and extendable component model, which yields simplicity for the end user. The model facilitates this by creating, managing and embedding data in different formats and representations to their used applications. Furthermore, machine-readable metadata is implicitly supported and used to link the internal data and external data sources together.

In this paper, a reputation-based Grid workflow scheduling algorithm is proposed to counter the effect of inherent unreliability and temporal characteristics of computing resources in large scale, decentralized Grid overlays. The proposed approach builds upon structured peer-to-peer indexing and overlay networking techniques to create a scalable wide-area networking of Grid sites for supporting dependable scheduling of applications. The scheduling algorithm considers reliability of a Grid resource as a statistical property, which is globally computed in the decentralized Grid overlay based on dynamic feedbacks or reputation scores assigned by individual service consumers (Grid Resource Brokers). The proposed algorithm can dynamically adapt to changing resource conditions and offer significant performance gains as compared to traditional approaches in the event of unsuccessful job execution or resource failure. We evaluate and demonstrate the feasibility of our approach through an extensive trace driven simulation. The results show that our scheduling technique can reduce the makespan up to 50% and successfully isolate the failure-prone resources from the system. © 2009 IEEE.

An important step towards seamless heterogeneous systems is the integration between WLAN and 3G cellular systems. Their interoperability has been frequently discussed in literature, however, there is still room for research in this issue. Since IEEE 802.11 networks reach relatively high data transmission rates when compared to other wireless networks, it has gained the attention of the cellular networks operators, such as UMTS operators, which have been considering IEEE 802.11 networks as a complement to their access networks. Notwithstanding, specification and development of real-time systems with mobility support are still a challenge due to their characteristic of criticality and safety. In this context, formal methods have shown effectiveness in real-time system development. The main advantage of formal methods is allowing a rigorous and nonambiguous system description. Thus, this work presents the specification and validation of two mobility management approaches to integrate UMTS and IEEE 802.11 networks: the first one is based on SIP, and the other one is based on MIP version 6. These specifications extend the Loose Interworking architecture and reach the fourth integration level of the 3GPP specification. These approaches are modeled using SDL and MSC formal description techniques, which are largely used to specify telecommunications systems. SDL also provides simulation and validation results that are analyzed to evaluate the proposed approaches with the goal of proving that formal methods can lead to a more precise and correct final system. © 2009 IEEE.

Current methods in mapping the availability of WiFi networks, such as crowdsourcing platforms (e.g. Project BASS and CoverageMap) and dedicated wardriving, face limitations in terms of data recency, volume, and cost-effectiveness. Due to the downsides of both these methods, opportunistic wardriving is proposed which utilizes public utility vehicles (PUVs). This study investigates the feasibility of PUVs as potential wardriving vehicles for opportunistic coverage mapping. This method is cost-efficient and removes the problem of data recency because of its continuous daily trips. The findings suggest that opportunistic wardriving with PUVs is viable for wardriving with its capability to detect a high volume of access points (APs). Multiple runs within the University of the Philippines Diliman campus showed the PUVs’ effectiveness in detecting a significant number of APs, with higher success rates at closer distances. Comparatively, warwalking detected fewer APs, but there was a significant overlap between the methods. The study also highlighted significant differences in detected AP types, with wardriving finding more mobile hotspots and miscellaneous devices than warwalking. Overall, the results underline the effectiveness of PUVs in providing extensive WiFi coverage data and further enhancements to the detection system could optimize the approach.

The emergence of networked computers has originated new technologies for teaching and learning. particularly, the technology of learning management systems. We have applied Erlang to deal with the concurrent part of a distributed system to support teaching and learning tasks. We have also employed declarative programming together with some formal tools to elaborate the specification and the conceptual model of the system and some extreme programming techniques to deal with some issues of software development. We show how Erlang supports the transition from the specification to the implementation, and the whole concurrent and computational process of our distributed system.

In the last decade, many business applications have moved into the cloud. In particular, the "database-as-a-service" paradigm has become mainstream. While existing multi-tenant data management systems focus on single-tenant query processing, we believe that it is time to rethink how queries can be processed across multiple tenants in such a way that we do not only gain more valuable insights, but also at minimal cost. As we will argue in this paper, standard SQL semantics are insufficient to process cross-tenant queries in an unambiguous way, which is why existing systems use other, expensive means like ETL or data integration instead. We first propose MTSQL, an extension to standard SQL, which fixes the ambiguity problem. Next, we present MTBase, a query processing middleware that efficiently processes MTSQL on top of SQL. As we will see, there is a canonical, provably correct, rewrite algorithm from MTSQL to SQL, which may however result in poor query execution performance, even on high-performance database products. We further show that with carefully-designed optimizations, execution times can be reduced in such ways that the difference to single-tenant queries becomes marginal. © 2018 Copyright held by the owner/author(s)

The Internet of Things (IoT) is about connecting people, processes, data, and things, and is changing the way we monitor and interact with things. An active incorporation of information and communication technology coupled with sophisticated data analytics approaches has the potential to transform some of the oldest industries in the world, including dairy farming. It presents a great opportunity for verticals such as the dairy industry to increase productivity by getting actionable insights to improve farming practices, thereby increasing efficiency and yield. Dairy farms have all the constraints of a modern business-they have a fixed production capacity, a herd to manage, expensive farm labor, and other varied farm-related processes to take care of. In this technology-driven era farmers look for assistance from smart solutions to increase profitability and to help manage their farms well. We present an end-To-end IoT application system with fog assistance and cloud support that analyzes data generated from wearables on cows' feet to detect anomalies in animal behavior that relate to illness such as lameness. The solution leverages behavioral analytics to generate early alerts toward the animals' well being, thus assisting the farmer in livestock monitoring. This in turn also helps in increasing productivity and milk yield by identifying potential diseases early on. The project specializes in detecting lameness in dairy cattle at an early stage, before visible signs appear to the farmer or an animal expert. Our trial results in a real-world smart dairy farm setup, consisting of a dairy herd of 150 cows in Ireland, demonstrate that the designed system delivers a lameness detection alert up to three days in advance of manual observation. © 2018 IEEE.
