The bag of visual words model (BoW) and its variants have demonstrate their effectiveness for visual applications and have been widely used by researchers. The BoW model first extracts local features and generates the corresponding codebook, the elements of a codebook are viewed as visual words. The local features within each image are then encoded to get the final histogram representation. However, the codebook is dataset dependent and has to be generated for each image dataset. This costs a lot of computational time and weakens the generalization power of the BoW model. To solve these problems, in this paper, we propose to undo the dataset bias by codebook linear transformation. To represent every points within the local feature space using Euclidean distance, the number of bases should be no less than the space dimensions. Hence, each codebook can be viewed as a linear transformation of these bases. In this way, we can transform the pre-learned codebooks for a new dataset. However, not all of the visual words are equally important for the new dataset, it would be more effective if we can make some selection using sparsity constraints and choose the most discriminative visual words for transformation. We propose an alternative optimization algorithm to jointly search for the optimal linear transformation matrixes and the encoding parameters. Due to the semantic gap, the low-level features are not able to semantically represent images well. Besides, traditional semantic related image representation may not be able to cope with large inter class variations and are not very ro- bust to noise. To solve these problems, in this paper, we propose a novel image representation method in the sub- semantic space. First, examplar classifiers are trained by separating each training image from the others and serve as the weak semantic similarity measurement. Then a graph is constructed by combining the visual similarity and weak se- mantic similarity of these training images. We partition this graph into visually and semantically similar sub-sets. Each sub-set of images are then used to train classifiers in order to separate this sub-set from the others. The learned sub-set classifiers are then used to construct a sub-semantic space based representation of images. This sub-semantic space is not only more semantically meaningful but also more reli- Able and resistant to noise. Finally, we make categorization of images using this sub-semantic space based representation on several public datasets to demonstrate the e®ectiveness of the proposed method. Copyright © 2013 ACM.

The use of local features has demonstrated its effectiveness for many visual applications. However, local features are often extracted with gray images. This ignores the useful information within different color channels which eventually hinders the final performance, especially for fine-grained image classification. Besides, the semantic information of local features is too weak to be applied for high-level visual applications. To cope with these problems, in this paper, we propose a novel fine-grained image classification method by using color exemplar classifiers. For each image, we first decompose it into multiple color channels to take advantage of the color information. For each color channel, we represent each image with a response histogram which is generated by exemplar classifiers. Experiments on several public image datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed color exemplar classifier based image classification method. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2013.

Nonlinear state filters of different approximations and capabilities have been developed in the last decade. The quality of different nonlinear filters, in terms of the mean squared error (MSE) of the estimates, depends on the approximations used in the filtering algorithm;however, there are no known methods for effectively evaluating the relative performance of these filters. A new method which measures the performance of different state filters against the theoretical posterior Cramér-Rao lower bound (PCRLB) is proposed. The complex high-dimensional integrals in PCRLB are approximated using sequential Monte-Carlo (SMC) methods. Efficacy of the proposed method is illustrated through a simulation example. © 2012 IFAC.

Comparing intelligent robots interacting with humans is a difficult task. First of all, robotic helps in everyday life can be involved in different tasks. Additionally, the grade of autonomy of the robot and the type of interaction between human and robot may differ to a great extent. It also is an intricate task to design common metrics to assess human-robot interaction. Thus normal benchmarks fail in this case. After an overview of already existing benchmarks in robotics this paper sketches affordances for benchmarks for human-robot interaction in a home environment. Many aspects of already existing benchmarks, evaluation criteria, and metrics have to be combined to asses human-robot interaction in a complex environment. The great difficulty is measuring human and robot behavior;here novel approaches taking into account perspectives from different fields (i.e. engineers, psychologists, sociologist) are needed, as a human being does not behave as anticipated by the system designer most of the time. Support vector clustering (SVC) faces the same over-fitting problem as support vector machine (SVM) caused by outliers or noises. Fuzzy support vector clustering (FSVC) algorithm is presented to deal with the problem. The membership model based on k-NN is used to determine the membership value of training samples. The proposed fuzzy support vector clustering algorithm is used to determine the clusters of some benchmark data sets. Experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm actually reduces the effect of outliers and yields better clustering quality than SVC and traditional centroid-based hierarchical clustering algorithm do. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

This article focusses on the control loop performance diagnosis of a multivariate system with emphasis on the presence of interactions and poor performance of control loops. The paper provides a data-driven technique to determine if a decentralized PI(D) + controller will suffice or if an advanced controller ( e.g. , MPC) is necessary to handle the control interactions and improve the loop performance. Two different techniques are proposed: the first one, based on the Power Spectrum of the error, analyzes interactions in the frequency domain, while the second one, based on the evaluation of a modified IAE (Integral of Absolute Error), analyzes interactions in the time domain. A performance index for the controller is also proposed for the case of set-point tracking. Simulation and experimental case studies are presented to highlight the applicability of the proposed techniques.

The effect of roundoff noise in a digital controller is analysed for a digital feedback control system. An analytical expression for the roundoff noise gain, defined as the ratio between the variances of the output error and the rounding error, is obtained. The problem of identifying the minimum roundoff noise realisations can be solved using an existing procedure. Noting that the optimal realisations are fully parametrised, based on a polynomial operator approach a new sparse controller realisation is derived. This realisation is a generalisation of the direct forms in the classical shift operator and the prevailing delta-operator. It provides more degrees of freedom with which to reduce the roundoff noise. The problem of finding optimal polynomial operators can be solved by an exhaustive search, and a design example is given. It is shown that with the proposed sparse realisation the optimal polynomial operators can outperform the shift- and delta-operators.

Hybrid dynamic systems include both continuous and discrete state variables. Properties of hybrid systems, which have an infinite state space, can often be verified using ordinary model checking together with a finite-state abstraction. Model checking can be inconclusive, however, in which case the abstraction must be refined. This paper presents a new procedure to perform this refinement operation for abstractions of hybrid systems. Following an approach originally developed for finite-state systems [11, 25], the refinement procedure constructs a new abstraction that eliminates a counterexample generated by the model checker. For hybrid systems, analysis of the counterexample requires the computation of sets of reachable states in the continuous state space. We show how such reachability computations with varying degrees of complexity can be used to refine hybrid system abstractions efficiently. Examples illustrate our counterexample-guided refinement procedure. Experimental results for a prototype implementation indicate significant advantages over existing methods. © 2003 World Scientific Publishing Company.
