This paper presents a multi-level approach for self-organization of in cyber-physical system resources. Cyber-physical system consists of physical part and cyber part. For implementation of joint actions by devices in physical part, they have to interact in cyber part. It is proposed to use the smart space technology for exchange information between these devices in cyber part of cyber-physical system. Smart Space -- is a computational environment consisting of multiple heterogeneous services (electronic and computational devices, Internet pages, data based, etc.) which has intelligent behavior, can proactively provide information taking into account current situation. Smart spaces allow unifying different levels of services, implement self-organization of services in each level, and providing politics from upper to lower level. Self-organization on every level is implemented based on ontology-based context management techniques and ontology matching method that provides semantic interoperability between interacted robots. Discussed in the paper case study solve the task of self-organization three types of robots based on politics from operation planning services and context situation in smart space. For the scenario implementation the Smart-M3 information sharing platform is used. It provides easy-to-use interfaces for information sharing through the RDF ontologies and publish / subscribe mechanism for connected services.

Due to the networking expertise, services and technical support of telecommunications operators, Smart Grid (SG) operators prefer telecommunications operators for their communications needs instead of creating private networks. In this paper, the use of Next Generation Networks (NGNs) by telecommunications operators to provide services to transnational SG operators for SG applications is evaluated. NGNs are all IP networks which are packet based and use IP to transport the various types of traffic such as data, voice, video, and signalling over converged fixed and mobile networks. The main idea of transnational SG operators is simple. By creating a huge single infrastructure for energy, more than one countries and nations can be powered at once. For this, it is not needed to install very huge power plants. Simply creating a complex network of power grid connections to each participating country is enough. The results of a set of simulation studies are given to show the efficiency of the NGN-based communication infrastructure for SG applications in terms of important network performance metrics. The results show that NGN-based communication infrastructures can carry packets based on their priority levels and bandwidth allocations in order to meet the specific requirements of SG applications.

This paper presents a system that is able to monitor the patient vital signs (Heart Rate, SPO 2 , NIBP, ECG, temperature and respiration rate) and send them continuously to the doctor's android phone device. The system enables multiple patients to be connected to the same doctor. Within the system, the health care professional may activate/deactivate any of the vital signs sensors. He can also set a prescription for the patient, schedule a meeting,... When bad activities are received, a message is directly sent to the doctor and to the patient relatives in order to alert them. Note that the Bluetooth connection is used to send/receive data between the patient platform and its android system. The tested results showed an almost error free system with an accuracy above 95% and a few milliseconds delay between the vital signs reading and their upload over the server.

Pantograph-catenary system is the most important component for transmitting the electric energy to the train. If the faults have not detected in an early stage, energy can disrupt the energy and this leads to more serious faults. The arcs occurred in the contact point is the first step of a fault. When they are detected in an early stage, catastrophic faults and accidents can be avoided. In this study, a new approach has been proposed to detect arcs in pantograph-catenary system. The proposed method applies a threshold value to each video frame and the rate of sudden glares are converted to time series. The phase space of the obtained time series is constructed and the arc event is found by using particle swarm optimization. The proposed method is analyzed by using real pantograph-videos and good result have been obtained. © 2014 IEEE.

Process modeling can play a central role in problem-based software development education with regard to qualifying students for the design and implementation of software applications for their specific needs without putting the focus on the technical part of coding. eXtreme Model Driven Design (XMDD) is a paradigm that focuses on the What (solving problems), rather than on the How (the technical skills of writing code). In this way it renders application design and implementation less daunting, thus accessible and more appealing to people that are either less technically skilled, or simply not interested at all in learning usual programming. In this paper we report on our experiences with the use of the jABC process modeling framework for teaching service-based software development in an XMDD fashion to students of different fields and on different levels of education.

Nowadays, many major efforts and interests are focused on providing better services for some elders and patients who have to live alone, while they are exposed to different dangers during their daily life activities such as falling. The necessity to reduce the negative consequences of falling, whether related to physical or psychological health or to financial encumbrances, by providing an immediate help and a continuous remote monitoring, drives a corresponding meaning to develop a reasonable safety-related monitoring and detecting system of the human motion with respect to the privacy and the simplicity. In this paper, a conceptual prototype of safety-related platform for monitoring human activities by mean of limited number of acceleration and rotation sensors is presented. Additionally, the proposed approach that adopts the artificial neural networks to overcome the challenges emerged by reducing the number of motion sensors and to compensate the missing data is also introduced. Moreover, the required procedures for collecting training and testing data are also summarized in the last section.

Budget analysis for water reservoirs using an autonomous sensor-equipped mini boat

Water is an inescapable necessity for all forms of life on Earth. Therefore, both man-made reservoirs and natural reservoirs play critical roles for several purposes. Evaporation is an important factor that should be taken into account in the case of surface water reservoirs in hot and dry environments, since it can cause significant water loss. In order to estimate the water budgets of reservoirs, the hydrologists are typically using specifically developed computer models which take into account the effects of evaporation. An important step in this repetitive process is to provide an as accurate as possible calculation of the current water budget of reservoir under study. A novel system for the required water budget calculation is proposed in this paper, providing an automated, fast and accurate solution, requiring no human effort as it is based on an autonomous sensor-equipped mini-boat. First, the autonomous mini boat follows predefined trajectories at a reservoir and builds a bathymetric map (depth map) of it. Then, an onboard computer calculates the water budget of the reservoir. The proposed system is portable;as a result, a single system can periodically serve at several water reservoirs. Following the description of the main components of the proposed system, that is the autonomous navigation system and water budget calculation application, the performance of the navigation subsystem and the system as a whole is evaluated based on simulation studies. In recent years, robots have started to become more commonplace in our lives, from factory floors to museums, festivals and shows. They have started to change how we work and play. With an increase in the population of the elderly, they have also been started to be used for caregiving services, and hence many countries have been investing in the robot development. The advancements in robotics and wireless communications has led to the emergence of autonomous caregiving robot teams which cooperate to accomplish a set of tasks assigned by human operators. Although wireless communications and devices are flexible and convenient, they are vulnerable to many risks compared to traditional wired networks. Since robots with wireless communication capability transmit all data types, including sensory, coordination, and control, through radio frequencies, they are open to intruders and attackers unless protected and their openness may lead to many security issues such as data theft, passive listening, and service interruption. In this paper, a secure web-based communication framework is proposed to address potential security threats due to wireless communication in robot-robot and human-robot interaction. The proposed framework is simple and practical, and can be used by caregiving robot teams in the exchange of sensory data as well as coordination and control data.

Through a detailed analysis of the theoretical basis for MOOCs in terms of educational learning theories, this paper attempts at finding the corresponding relationship between the theories and MOOCs, which not only theoretically explains the reasons why MOOCs exceed all the previous education models, but also empirically proves it with voluminous facts and data. The author conducts this research in the hope of enlightening the online education platform of other types. Besides, this paper provides the model framework and strategy to multidimensional educational review based on MOOCs. The model and strategy are applicable not only to MOOCs, the large-scale online education, but also to various online education platforms.

Although Smart Grid (SG) transformation brings many advantages to electric utilities, the longstanding challenge for all them is to supply electricity at the lowest cost. In addition, currently, the electric utilities must comply with new expectations for their operations, and address new challenges such as energy efficiency regulations and guidelines, possibility of economic recessions, volatility of fuel prices, new user profiles and demands of regulators. In order to meet all these emerging economic and regulatory realities, the electric utilities operating SGs must be able to determine and meet load, implement new technologies that can effect energy sales and interact with their customers for their purchases of electricity. In this respect, load forecasting which has traditionally been done mostly at city or country level can address such issues vital to the electric utilities. In this paper, an artificial neural network based energy consumption forecasting system is proposed and the efficiency of the proposed system is shown with the results of a set of simulation studies. The proposed system can provide valuable inputs to smart grid applications.
