In this paper, we propose an On-Demand Content Delivery Grid system that supplements the traditional content delivery network to deal with problems such as the huge influx of network traffic in a short period of time and the high cost in renting a fixed number of servers. We present its system architecture and describe its implementation in details. An experimental high-definition movie streaming site was setup using our content delivery grid system to demonstrate its capabilities with performance analysis.

The common cause failures (ccf) are the biggest part when calculating the probability of failure for redundant safety integrity systems. A ccf can occur, when a random hardware failure leads to a failure of several components. There are several methods to calculate the probability of ccf. Three models will be shown in this paper, with the help of which the beta-factor will be calculated. The ccf ratio for the calculation of the overall probability of failure is defined with the beta-factor.

This paper proposes a new interworking scheme for Mobile IP and the Session Initiation Protocol being the most popular solutions for mobility management at the network and application layers respectively. The goal is to deliver seamless mobility for both TCP-based and UDP-based applications taking the best features from each mobility management scheme. In short, this paper proposes that TCP connections are handled through Mobile IP while UDP-based connection-less applications may use the Session Initiation Protocol for handling mobility. The two mobility management solutions are integrated into one common solution. Copyright 2008 ACM.

The paper presents the on-going EC-funded Tempus project "MSc and PhD studies in Aerospace Critical Computing" executed by the National Aerospace University, Kharkiv, Ukraine with the support of Newcastle University and City University of London, UK and Åbo Akademi University, Turku, Finland. The state-of-the-art, completed work as well as the next steps of the development of master and doctoral courses for the specialty in critical software engineering, computer systems and networks are described. The inputs from each of the European consortium members are presented. Copyright 2008 ACM.
We propose a novel execution model for the implicitly parallel execution of data parallel programs in the presence of general I/O operations. This model is called hybrid because it combines the advantages of the stand...

Learning computer science is no longer simply a matter of learning computerprogramming. Indeed, modern day computing jobs demand design, communication and collaborative skills as well. In order to address this need and make computing education more engaging, motivating, and community-oriented, we have been exploring a ldquostudio basedrdquo approach in which students (a) construct computational solutions to problems that have many possible solution strategies, and then (b) present their solutions to their peers and instructors for feedback and discussion. In the fall of 2007, we implemented this approach in a pre-CS1course by requiring students to present their solutions to five course programming projects in face-to-face review sessions. Interview and observational data collected in this course pointed out several practical and logistical problems surrounding the face-to-face review sessions that diminished their educational effectiveness. To address these problems, we describe the preliminary design of a novel asynchronous Web-based project review system to support and augment face-to-face studio-based review sessions.

Because they are easy to create and modify, low fidelity prototypes are commonly used in early evaluations of user interface designs. Designers typically use either pen-and-paper or various computer-based tools to create and test low fidelity prototypes. However, our informal analyses of these technologies indicate that they do not optimally support the two key, complementary tasks of (a) prototype creation and (b) wizard-of-oz testing. To address this problem, we have developed WOZ PRO, a pen-based software environment for the quick and easy creation and testing of low fidelity user interface prototypes. When designing interface screens in WOZ PRO, designers can easily (a) propagate a design change to other related screens, and (b) specify the set of screens that are reachable from a given screen. In a wizard-of-oz test, WOZ PRO aims to reduce the cognitive load on the wizard by allowing navigation only to those next screens that are valid. An experimental comparison of WOZ PRO and pen-and-paper provides evidence of WOZ PROpsilas potential, and insight into how its design might be improved.

ScatterFactory2 is a model-driven eclipse-based framework for the new generation of our WSN platform ScatterWeb The already deployed Modular Sensor Boards (MSBs) can be configured, programmed and tested at the same time. This is made possible by the combination of plug-ins for ScatterFactory2. Apart from the high grade of automation, the focus of ScatterFactory2 lies with the aspect of human-computer interfaces for WSN. ScatterFactory2 provides the opportunity to examine different characteristics and properties of WSN-applications illustratively and interactively. The plug-in oriented architecture encourages the enhancement of the tool, when new questions concerning WSN arise. ScatterFactory2 is based wholly on open source components, which are available at no extra cost.

The authors present their latest research results and developments of a code generator for Matlab/Simulink block diagrams and to download the generated code onto safety related systems such as a safety PLC (programmable logic controller). An example demonstrates the different stages for code generation, evaluation and conversion before such code can be used in process industries. Systematic approaches are necessary when such source code is embedded in process units. To the best knowledge of the authors, Matlab/Simulink source code has not been transferred on safety PLC before. Matlab/Simulink is an advanced and matured programming environment, especially for simulations of engineering processes and systems. Hardly no hardware exists, when it comes to download the developed algorithms and to use it in real world applications and so far this approach is the only one for using developed and tested Matlab/Simulink software on an safety related system.
