In managing today's complex and aging power plant facilities safely, increasing attention has been paid to the challenges of detecting pipe leak faults quickly and accurately. This study focuses on developing a resource-efficient leak detection system using distributed acoustic sensors, in pursuit of the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm. The proposed system extracts a small number of featured predictors from the raw acoustic signals, so the presence of leaks can be readily detected by applying machine learning classifiers while reducing the burden on data transmission, storage and computation. A system prototype is successfully evaluated through the experiments with acoustic signals measured around a laboratory scale nuclear power plant coolant pipelines, considering the ambient background and machinery noises. © 2018 IEEE.

We propose a simple yet effective structural patch decomposition approach for multi-exposure image fusion (MEF) that is robust to ghosting effect. We decompose an image patch into three conceptually independent components: signal strength, signal structure, and mean intensity. Upon fusing these three components separately, we reconstruct a desired patch and place it back into the fused image. This novel patch decomposition approach benefits MEF in many aspects. First, as opposed to most pixel-wise MEF methods, the proposed algorithm does not require post-processing steps to improve visual quality or to reduce spatial artifacts. Second, it handles RGB color channels jointly, and thus produces fused images with more vivid color appearance. Third and most importantly, the direction of the signal structure component in the patch vector space provides ideal information for ghost removal. It allows us to reliably and efficiently reject inconsistent object motions with respect to a chosen reference image without performing computationally expensive motion estimation. We compare the proposed algorithm with 12 MEF methods on 21 static scenes and 12 deghosting schemes on 19 dynamic scenes (with camera and object motion). Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm not only outperforms previous MEF algorithms on static scenes but also consistently produces high quality fused images with little ghosting artifacts for dynamic scenes. Moreover, it maintains a lower computational cost compared with the state-of-The-Art deghosting schemes.11The MATLAB code of the proposed algorithm will be made available online. Extracting high I/O performance from parallel file systems is no longer the only goal in modern data centres. As issues of the Energy Wall and the Reliability Wall become unavoidable, it is a demanding and challenging task to reduce energy consumption in large-scale storage systems in modern data centres while retaining acceptable systems reliability. Most energy conservation techniques inevitably have adverse impacts on the parallel disk systems. To address the reliability issues of energy-efficient parallel storage systems, we propose a reliable energy-efficient storage system called RESS, which aims at improving both energy efficiency and reliability of parallel storage systems by seamlessly integrating HDDs and SSDs. At the heart of the RESS is a transformative middleware layer, which reorganizes the I/O workload for the underlying parallel file systems. With the help of the middleware layer, RESS can distribute popular data to SSDs and put HDDs into the low-power mode under light workload conditions without modification of the parallel systems.

Nowadays, the ubiquity of smart phones make them carry large amounts of personal sensitive information, but at the same time, there are also many Apps in Android APP market that target to collect users' sensitive data. So it becomes quite important to prevent users from the threat of privacy leakage. In this paper, we analyze the Android's privacy protection mechanism, and describe various threats to users' different types of privacy data. After that, we enumerate two ways that can leak sensitive information, and discuss the current solutions and techniques from aspects of privacy protection enhancement and privacy leakage detection. We also make a fine-grained classification for these two aspects, and study the difference between solutions in each category. Finally, we summarize the deficiency of existing research of Android privacy protection and propose the future research direction. © 2015 IEEE.

Recent studies indicate that the energy cost and carbon footprint of data centers have become exorbitant. It is a demanding and challenging task to reduce energy consumption in large-scale storage systems in modern data centers. Most energy conservation techniques inevitably have adverse impacts on parallel disk systems. To address the reliability issues of energy-efficient parallel disks, we propose a reliable energy-efficient RAID system called REED, which aims at improving both energy efficiency and reliability of RAID systems by seamlessly integrating HDDs and SSDs. At the heart of REED is a high-performance cache mechanism powered by SSDs, which are serving popular data. Under light workload conditions, REED spins down HDDs into the low-power mode, thereby offering energy conservation. Importantly, during an I/O access turbulence (i.e., I/O load is dynamically and frequently changing), REED is conducive to reducing the number of disk power-state transitions by keeping HDDs in the low-power mode while serving requests with SSDs. We build a model to quantitatively show that REED is capable of improving the reliability of energy-efficient RAIDs. We implement the REED prototype in a real-world RAID-0 system. Our experimental results demonstrate that REED improves the energy-efficiency of conventional RAID-0 by up to 73% while maintaining good reliability.

Music tracking is a useful technique for many music related tasks. Some applications include evaluating musicians performance, automatic score page turning and syncing music lyrics. In this work, we describe a WiSARD-based system for real-time music tracking and evaluate the performance of the corresponding implementation. Given any audio example, the system is capable of recognizing which point of the original signal is currently playing and of dynamically tracking it. In other words, if the music restarts or jumps to another position, the system is capable of following it. This is accomplished thanks to the low complexity training and classifying of the models used, which continually keep track of all possible points of the music, and not only of the current neighboring region. Experiments are provided in order to analyze the performance of the system in three test scenarios: tracking continuous playing, tracking multiple jumps and self predicting errors. The final results demonstrate that the system is efficient even when applied to musics with some level of repetitions and short periods of silence.

The intelligentizing of sensor has been an important trend for sensor technology in recent years. In this paper, the new structure of the intelligent color scale sensor is presented;especially the software system design of intelligent color scale sensor based on the photoelectric measurement is given in detail. By using the control system based on Micro Control Unit (MCU), which takes full advantage of the resources on MCU, a new digital intelligent color scale sensor is successfully developed at a lower cost. Motor operates as the power source of the vehicles, which is one of the most important parts in the vehicle system. This paper is going to find out the speed control method of the DC motor of Golf electrical cars from both theory and practice. A virtual instrument, which produces the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal, is developed with LabVIEW to control the motor speed. This smart motor speed controller differs from the traditional mechanical control of DC motor in daily life, and is instructive and significant as a new speed control method of vehicle motor. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
